Many Lohias? Appropriations Of Lohia In Karnataka, Chandan Gowda
Chandan Gowda
Analysing Rammanohar Lohia’s reception in the spheres of party politics, social movements and literature in Karnataka, it emerges that his impact on electoral politics in the state was not substantial. However, key policy innovations such as Devaraj Urs’ land reforms and pro-backward class policies in the 1970s owed a debt to Lohia. He was also a major influence on social and literary movements in the state. Besides inspiring some of the key leaders of the farmers’ movement, Lohia contributed to the distinctiveness of the dalit movement in Karnataka. His ideas on caste, language and individual freedom also inspired the leading …

Progress In Human Development: Are We On The Right Path, Hippu Sk Nathan, Srijit Mishra

The conventional measure of Human Development Index (HDI) is a linear average across dimensions, HDI1. Under this, poor attainments in any dimension gets perfectly compensated for better attainments in any other dimension HDI2, which is based on Euclidean distance measuring shortfall from the ideal, addresses the above anomaly. In our analysis of progress, we use HDI2 to develop the notion of an ideal path and penalty to capture deviation from this; and a measure of fluctuation. The measures are applied to 127 countries for the period 1990-2004. The results show that Sub-Saharan countries have suffered on account of sharp decline …

The selected six papers focused on different aspects of development policy. The aim is to put together diverse development issues and their implications in different segments of an economy, which are critical issues for low- and middle-income countries in a globalised financial system that places high risk for greater capital mobility into these countries. This special issue focuses on different structural aspects that can give rise to varying degrees of country-specific risks. While the first two papers investigate challenges facing development or improvement in standard of living, the next two papers focus on labour market reform and trade liberalisation in …

"Advance Mysore" : The Cultural Logic Of A Developmental State, Chandan Gowda

What governs state interests in development in formerly colonised societies? Conventional social science accounts stress politico-economic variables, particularly the need for capital accumulation. By means of a detailed analysis of the Bhadravati Iron Works, an ambitious industrial project in the state of Mysore in colonial India, it is demonstrated that mechanisms are also important in state-led development. Locational disadvantages, technical problems, and increased production costs made the iron plant an unprofitable venture from its inception. The state, however, kept the plant operational on grounds of its pedagogic value for local society. A claim for civilisational recognition for India’s capacity for …

At the end of 2003, between 1,039,000 and 1,185,000 persons in the United States were living with HIV/AIDS (Glynn and Rhodes 2005) and the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that approximately 40,000 more persons in the U.S. become infected with HIV each year (CDC 2003). According to the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) and the World Health Organization (WHO), the international statistics are even more sobering: there were approximately 39.4 million people living with HIV/AIDS in 2004, and an estimated 4.9 million newly infected people in 2004 with 3.1 million human deaths attributed …

An archaeological data recovery was recently completed by Richard Grubb & Associates, Inc. at the Cooper-Mann House site (28-Sx-399), owned from 1862 through 1909 by a single free African-American family in Sussex Borough (formerly known as Deckertown), Sussex County, New Jersey. These excavations were done in advance of a New Jersey Department of Transportation project to realign State Route 23 through the area; the Cooper-Mann House site was considered significant for its long association with the Mann family. Excavations were conducted in 1999 around the exterior of the house, and in 2008, in the building's interior prior to demolition (Richard …

Designing, Producing And Enacting Nationalisms: Contemporary Amerindian Fashion In Canada, Cory Willmott
Designing, Producing And Enacting Nationalisms: Contemporary Amerindian Fashion In Canada, Cory Willmott
Cory A. Willmott
Today, generations after the adoption of European styles, Amerindian peoples’ everyday clothing is almost indistinguishable from that of other residents of North America. Until recently their culturally distinct clothing has been mainly reserved for ceremonial occasions such as powwows and religious rituals. This bifurcation of clothing styles and contexts parallels the dichotomy between ‘traditional’ and ‘assimilated’ Native identity that has been imposed by the dominant society. The dichotomy is a double bind: adopting ‘traditional’ identities, Native peoples are cast into a static ahistorical frame, while appearing ‘assimilated’ erases cultural distinctiveness. In both cases, Native peoples cannot effectively stake claims to …

Transparent obsidian artifacts have been reported for the northern Lake Titicaca Basin. Based on instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) of these artifacts a distinct chemical group was identified. Yet, the location of the source of transparent obsidian in the southern Andes remained unreported in the archaeological literature. This paper reports on the chemical composition and geographic location of a source of transparent obsidian from the Macusani region of Peru. Through the use of INAA and portable X-ray fluorescence (PXRF) we demonstrate that Macusani obsidian or macusanite comprises (at least) two chemical groups. One of these groups was used for making …

Adoption seals original birth certificates not just from the public, but from the parties named therein. The author argues against the claim that there is any need to continue these antiquated laws to "prtoect" mothers' anonymity.

Holistic Medicine Not "Torture": Performing Acupuncture In Galway, Ireland, Kevin Taylor Anderson

This article examines how the aesthetic design of clinics and interactive discourse 5 and rituals construct the social reality of acupuncture sessions as a form of holistic medical therapy. Verbal and nonverbal interactions create an appealing medical environment but also help prevent the emergence of undesired counter-realities (e.g., pain, biomedical intervention). Based on observations of acupuncture sessions conducted in Galway, Ireland, I illustrate how 10 ambiance and aesthetic elements of clinics create a complex medico-cultural environment that balances oppositional associations (Western=non-Western, exoticism=convention, medical alterity=medical professionalism). Patients inter- viewed continually referred to acupuncture as a natural and non-invasive form of medical …

Library Access And Equity For First Nations, Metis, And Inuit Peoples, Mary G. Kosta

The Canadian Library Association Code of Ethics includes the duty of librarians to provide equitable access to libraries for all users. In the case of the indigenous peoples of Canada, the First Nations, Métis, and Inuit (FNMI), we are not living up to our professional responsibilities. FNMI peoples do not use public and academic libraries in high numbers because of barriers to access and lack of equitable services. It is our responsibility as librarians to understand what barriers exist, and why, and to look for ways to eliminate them.

“What Does This Tell About Us?” Social Research And Indigenous Peoples: The Case Of The Paq’Tnkek Mi’Kmaq, Anthony A. Davis Dr,, Jane Mcmillan Dr.
Anthony A. Davis Dr,
Indigenous peoples’ conditions and issues have attracted considerable global attention, especially since the United Nations Rio Declaration and Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. Yet, indigenous people continue to struggle to achieve the benefits that are inherent to their rights. Often these struggles are played out within judicial settings wherein “reliable evidence” is a requirement for decisions that affirm rights. Social research collaborations potentially have much to contribute to these processes. In this article we outline key attributes of a social research collaboration between university researchers and an indigenous Mi’kmaq community in Nova Scotia, Canada. The strengths and limitations …
