Readers of this Newsletter will be saddened to hear of the death of Dr. Helen Creighton, Canada's foremost collector of folksongs, on Tuesday, December 12, [1989], in Halifax. She was 90 years old. There is little I can add to Stephen Pedersen's fine article from the Halifax Chronicle-Herald (12/16/89) reprinted below beyond a couple of recollections of my own.

Northeast Folklore Society Newsletter

The Northeast Archives of Folklore and Oral History is pleased to announce two new additions to its staff: Teresa L. Hollingsworth of Berea, Kentucky, who is filling the newly created position of Folklife Coordinator, and Mary E. O'Meara of Saratoga Springs, N.Y., who will replace Alicia Rouverol as the Archives' Associate Director. Ms. Hollingsworth, a graduate of the Folk Studies Program at Western Kentucky University, was the staff folklorist at the Kentucky Folklife Program at Berea College, and conducted extensive folklife surveys along the Ohio and Kentucky River Valleys.

Religion And The Body: Rematerializing The Human Body In The Social Sciences Of Religion, Meredith B. Mcguire

Sociology & Anthropology Faculty Research

The social sciences of religion could be transformed by taking seriously the fact that humans are embodied. A new conceptualization of a mindful body has the potential to lead to profound shifts in how we view our subjects and their worlds. Our research strategies need to take into account that believers (and nonbelievers) are not merely disembodied spirits, but that they experience a material world in and through their bodies. Greater awareness of the social and political uses of human bodies should guide our research and theory.

Immunoglobulin Haplotypes – Markers Of Reproductive Success, Joan C. Stevenson, Moses S. Schanfield, Michael H. Crawford, Phillip Mark Everson

Anthropology Faculty and Staff Publications

Immunoglobulin haplotypes are highly polymorphic and are useful for analyses of both macro- and microdifferentiation of populations. The origins of this diversity are not known, but recent reports suggest strong selection at this locus. Increased rates of first-trimester spontaneous abortions have been reported when parents share GM phenotypes. Reduced fertility has been observed in mixed European descent white and Hutterite populations when both parents share immunoglobulin haplotypes. Population samples with completed family information and GM haplotype data are rare; the objective here is to provide this information on another sample.
