The inaccessibility and cost of soil testing reduce effectiveness of fertilizer use on small-scale subsistence farms, and inadequate funding promotes adoption of soil tests in developing countries with minimal validation. For example, Mehlich-I extraction of phosphorus (P) currently used extensively in Guatemala may not be suitable for its broad range of soils. At least four alternatives are available but are relatively untested [Bray 1, Mehlich III, Olsen and pressurized hot water (PHW)]. Pressurized hot water is relatively simple and inexpensive, but is not yet tested against other extraction methods under variable P or potassium (K) fertilization levels. To determine whether …

In a 2 yr study 180 lactating cows (2 to 10 yr old) grazing pastures dominated by smooth bromegrass and Kentucky bluegrass near Brookings, SD received 3 supplemental treatments for 48 d beginning in mid May. Cows received 4.6 lb DM of dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS), 4.3 lb corn DM, or no supplement daily, starting approximately 14 d prior to the start of the breeding season. Cows were bled weekly for 5 wk beginning 1 wk prior to the beginning of the treatment period. Serum was analyzed for progesterone concentration to determine the onset of cyclicity. Effects Of Homofermentative Lactic Acid Bacterial Inoculants On The Fermentation And Aerobic Stability Characteristics Of Low Dry Matter Corn Silages, Eki̇n Sucu, İsmai̇l Fi̇lya

This study was carried out to determine the effects of homofermentative lactic acid bacterial inoculants on the fermentation and aerobic stability characteristics of low dry matter corn silages. Corn was harvested at the milk stage. Inoculant-1188 (Pioneer^®, USA; Inoculant A) and Maize-All (Alltech, UK; Inoculant B) were used as homofermentative lactic acid bacterial inoculants. Inoculants were applied to silages 1.5 x 10^6 colony forming units/g levels. Silages with no additive served as controls. After treatment, the chopped corn was ensiled in 1.5-l special anaerobic jars, equipped with a lid that enables gas release only. Three jars from each group were …
