Distribution Patterns Of Pocket Gophers In The Hobble Creek Area, Utah County, Elvis J. Holt Aug 1964

Distribution Patterns Of Pocket Gophers In The Hobble Creek Area, Utah County, Elvis J. Holt

Theses and Dissertations

This study was initiated to investigate the distribution patterns of two species of pocket gophers, Thomomys umbrinus albicaudatus Hall and T. talpoides wasatchensis Durrant whose ranges come together in the Hobble Creek area, Utah. The effect of certain ecological factors upon their distribution was determined. The ecological factors included: vegetation and land use, soil, moisture and exposure, hybridization and interspecific competition. From morphological examination no interbreeding was detected even though the breeding seasons of the two species correspond. A limited area was found where the ranges of the two species are in contact. A lack of available moisture was determined …

Autoradiographic Localization Of Serotonin And 5-Hydroxytryptophan In The Rat Brain, Gordon Keith Matheson Jul 1964

Autoradiographic Localization Of Serotonin And 5-Hydroxytryptophan In The Rat Brain, Gordon Keith Matheson

Theses and Dissertations

Serotonin is a normal constituent of the brain and has been claimed to act as a neurohormonal or regulatory agent in nerve transmission. Previous workers have only studied its whole brain or subcellular particulate distribution. Because the brain itself is divided into many distinct ganglia and nuclei, the distribution of serotonin in these sites is considered to be of greater importance than either the whole brain or subcellular distribution. This paper is a study of the distribution of serotonin in particular brain sites in rats with normal and elevated levels of the amine, with and without electroshock treatment. The results …

The Relative Accuracy Of Estimating The Production Of Dairy Cows As Affected By Length Of Testing Interval And Method Of Estimating Production, Ross M. Young May 1964

The Relative Accuracy Of Estimating The Production Of Dairy Cows As Affected By Length Of Testing Interval And Method Of Estimating Production, Ross M. Young

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Production records for dairy cows were first based on the yield of butter for a seven day period any time during the lactation. Later, 365- day records based on production for one day in each calendar month came into general use. The records preferred at present are 305- day records based on monthly test day production, but calculated using the centering date method. The centering date estimate is based on milk and butterfat production from two consecutive milkings per month. The sampling day is centered as nearly as possible in the test month period which need not coincide with the …

Canada Goose Production And Population Stability, Ogden Bay Waterfowl Management Area, Utah, Norman H. Dey May 1964

Canada Goose Production And Population Stability, Ogden Bay Waterfowl Management Area, Utah, Norman H. Dey

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Since the development of Ogden Bay Waterfowl Management Area in 1937, the Canada goose (Branta canadesis moffitti) population increased to a peak in 1949 and then declined slightly. Nelson (1954) noted that the decrease in population was probably due to either a change in habitat or increased hunting pressure. In recent years, direct band returns have indicated a high mortality rate in the population. This project was initiated to determine the relative stability of the Canada goose population and to measure, as closely as possible, the effect of a high mortality rate upon the nesting population.

Annotated Checklist Of The Birds Of San Joaquin County, California, James Leroy Tate Jr. Jan 1964

Annotated Checklist Of The Birds Of San Joaquin County, California, James Leroy Tate Jr.

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Evaluation of many records is the only way valid judgments can be made on abundance and status. The necessity of obtaining exact dates, localities, numbers, and special weather conditions cannot be overemphasized. For this reason, records in supplement to this list are freely solicited.

The present checklist includes all species and subspecies for which specimens exist. In some instances sight records have been adequate reason for including a species on the list when no specimen existed. Sight records for species which are difficult to identify have been admitted upon careful editing. The author has followed the policy outlined by Griscom …

Characterization Of Staphylococcus Species Isolated From Raw Milk With Special Reference To The Enterotoxigenic Coagulase-Positive Types, Adnan M. Ammouri Jan 1964

Characterization Of Staphylococcus Species Isolated From Raw Milk With Special Reference To The Enterotoxigenic Coagulase-Positive Types, Adnan M. Ammouri

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Numerous reports from many parts of the world have described the occurrence of outbreaks of staphylococcus food poisoning. Some studies have incriminated raw milk as a reservoir of the staphylococcus organisms as the vehicle of transmission. Recently Cheddar cheese has been implicated as the contaminating agent in food poisoning outbreaks traced to dairy products. The frequency of outbreaks of staphylococcus food poisoning has stimulated interest in the characterization of members of the staphylococcus genus. The strains particularly important are those capable of production an enterotoxin. In order to determine the strains of staphylococcus organisms isolated from raw milk which are …

The Effect Of Frozen Storage On The Microflora Of Raw Milk, Jaswant Singh Jan 1964

The Effect Of Frozen Storage On The Microflora Of Raw Milk, Jaswant Singh

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The proper handling of milk samples prior to bacterial analysis has been somewhat of a problem to dairy processors of South Dakota. There have been, and still are, many queries by these people about the treatment of o milk sample prior to the determination of a bacterial count. Should the milk samples be frozen prior to determining the number of bacteria? If it is feasible, what effect will the freezing have on the number of bacteria found? No tangible information about this problem has been found in the literature. Standard procedure emphasize mainly the icing of milk sample before analyzing …

Comparative Study Of Milk Quality Tests On Manufacturing Grade Raw Milk, Donald L. Wallace Jan 1964

Comparative Study Of Milk Quality Tests On Manufacturing Grade Raw Milk, Donald L. Wallace

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

One criterion used to determine the quality of milk is based upon its bacterial content. This immediately emphasizes the problems of determining milk quality. Bacteriological tests are, at best, only estimates of the number or the activity of the organisms present. Since its introduction to South Dakota dairy farms, the bulk tank has continued to increase in popularity. Its increased acceptance has caused new problems in determining milk quality. The bulk tank allows the farmer to cool the milk faster and more efficiently than ever before, thereby limiting bacterial growth. Quality tests should not only differentiate between good and poor …
