Many mammals travel on both tree branches and flat ground in their natural habitat. Forelimbs were found to have the dominant role in braking on both substrates, while hindlimbs had the dominant role in propulsion on both substrates. However, the forelimb aided in propulsion more so than the hindlimbs contributed to braking on both substrates.

Anatomy and function are usually closely related. Since locomotion on tree branches is common among mammals, we expect to find that the anatomy is well adapted for gripping narrow cylindrical branch-like substrates. Based on the anatomy alone, rats are built for locomotion across cylindrical branches as well as terrestrial substrates.

This booklet is designed to assist you in exploring and appreciating the Houtman Abrolhos Islands. It provides a general overview on the attributes of the Abrolhos that make it so unique. A place rich in ecological, historical, economic and cultural significance for Western Australia.

Apart from being an introduction to the Abrolhos, the booklet also provides background and context for the various management plans and strategies developed and implemented to sustainably manage these Islands and their surrounding waters.

Boat-Based Recreational Fishing Catch And Effort In Cockburn Sound And Owen Anchorage During 1996/97, 2001/02 And 2005/06, Neil Sumner, Eva Lai

Fisheries research contract reports

This report presents catch and effort estimates from three surveys of boat-based fishers. Recreational anglers used lines with bait or lures to catch fish. Boat-based crabbers either use drop nets or catch crabs by hand whilst diving or snorkelling. Surveys of recreational fishing activities that included coverage of Cockburn Sound were conducted during 1996/1997 (Sumner and Williamson, 1999), in 2001/02 (Sumner and Malseed, 2004) and in 2005/06 (Sumner et al., 2008). The 1996/97 and 2005/06 surveys covered the entire West Coast Bioregion of Western Australia, which includes Cockburn Sound. There was a need to re-analyse data collected during the …

Status reports of the fisheries and aquatic resources

The Status Reports of the Fisheries and Aquatic Resources of Western Australia provide the public with an annual update on the state of the fish and other aquatic resources of Western Australia managed by the Department. These reports outline the cumulative risk status for each of the ecological resources (assets) within WA’s six Bioregions using an Ecosystem-Based Fisheries Management (EBFM) approach.
