Crude glycerin is a byproduct of biodiesel production, and its use as a feedstuff for cattle has expanded in the last decade due to increased availability and favorable pricing compared with other energy concentrates such as cereal grains. Incorporation of glycerin into cereal-based finishing diets, at levels up to 8%, has been shown to improve cattle performance; however, it decreases activity of cellulolytic microorganisms in the rumen, ultimately decreasing fiber digestion. Most of the studies conducted to date have evaluated glycerin in finishing diets that contain relatively small amounts of fiber, but little is known of its value as an …

Weather-related stressors are a well-recognized opponent to animal welfare and can have important ramifications for animal performance. Sound animal husbandry practices historically have attempted to diminish the effects of deleterious environmental factors. Providing aid to animals when temperatures are above or below their thermal neutral zone (TNZ) can improve animal welfare and/or performance. Because most breeds of cattle are not well equipped to deal with heat, the temperatures at which heat stress can begin to affect cattle can be surprisingly low. Pre- and postpartum deficiencies of metabolizable protein have been identified as potentially limiting to productivity of beef cows and calves. Pre-partum supplementation of forage-based diets with ruminally undegraded protein has increased weight gain and breeding performance in prior studies, but the level of ruminally degraded protein fed was not known. Feeding adequate ruminally degraded protein to beef cows maximizes the productivity of microbes in the rumen, so any benefits shown in prior work could have been attributed to increased ruminal fermentation. Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of wheat and crystalline amino acids on growth performance of nursery and finishing pigs. In Exp. 1, a total of 192 pigs (PIC, 337 × 1050, initially 26.7 lb BW) were used in a 21-d nursery study. Pigs were allotted to pens by initial BW, and pens were assigned to 1 of 4 dietary treatments in a completely randomized design with 6 pigs per pen and 8 replications per treatment. Pork producers and advisers to the swine industry were surveyed about their knowledge of feed efficiency. The questionnaire was designed to accomplish three objectives: (a) determine the level of knowledge related to feed efficiency topics, (b) identify production practices being used that influence feed efficiency, and (c) identify information gaps or areas requiring additional knowledge to further improve feed efficiency. Producer responses imply that they are unfamiliar with information behind the effects of fat inclusion, particle size reduction, feed additives, and thermal environment on feed efficiency. Of all food safety challenges facing the beef industry, Escherichia coli O157:H7 has consistently presented the greatest economic remonstrance to meat packers and retailers. Cattle naturally shed E. coli O157:H7 in their feces, and it is a source of carcass contamination at harvest. If contaminated trim enters the food supply and is subsequently prepared incorrectly, it can lead to the human condition known as hemorrhagic colitis. In children or elderly people, an E. coli O157:H7 infection may lead to a more serious form known as hemolytic uremic syndrome, which is potentially lethal. A total of 140 sows (PIC 1050) and their litters were used to determine the effects of corn- or sorghum-based diets with or without 20% sorghum dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS) on lactating sow and litter performance. On d 110 of gestation, sows were allotted to 1 of 4 dietary treatments arranged in a 2 × 2 factorial with main effects of grain source (corn vs. sorghum) and sorghum DDGS (0 vs. 20%; 32.1% CP and 9.2% crude fat as-fed). Bovine lameness presents itself in a variety of forms. A number of predisposing factors have been reported, such as increased amounts of wet feces and mud from high rainfall; limb trauma from rocks, sticks, or handling facilities; inappropriate animal handling; or improper facility design. Trauma causes lameness directly and often provides an avenue for bacterial agents to enter and colonize a wound. Performance of lame cattle is diminished due to impaired ambulation, resulting in decreased feed intake and decreased body weight. Diet selection is a dynamic process because of seasonal changes in animal and plant characteristics. Nutrient requirements of grazing animals are a function of physiological state; moreover, plant characteristics may be altered with prescribed spring burning of native rangelands. Prescribed spring burning is used to improve the average quality of pasture forage by removing old growth and making new plant growth more accessible to grazing cattle. A total of 252 mixed-sex pigs (PIC 327 × 1050; initial BW = 79.8 ± 0.9 lb BW) were used in a 95-d growth study to compare feed-budgeting strategies and complete diet blending for finishing pigs on growth performance, carcass characteristics, and economics. Feed was delivered to all pens of pigs using a computerized feed delivery system (FeedPro, Feedlogic Corp., Willmar, MN) that is capable of delivering and dispensing 2 separate diets. A total of 210 pigs (PIC 327 × 1050, initially 15.12 lb BW) were used in a 35-d trial to evaluate the effects of increasing dietary wheat middlings (midds) on growth performance of 15- to 50-lb nursery pigs. Pens of pigs were balanced by initial BW and randomly allotted to 1 of 5 dietary treatments with 6 replications per treatment. A total of 1,100 nursery pigs (PIC C-29 × 359, initially 15.0 lb BW) were used in a 42-d growth trial to determine the effects of increasing soybean hulls (10 or 20%) and soybean hull particle size (unground or ground) in nursery pig diets fed in both meal and pelleted forms. Producers have adopted marketing strategies such as topping to help reduce economic losses from weight discounts at the processing plant. Despite adopting these strategies, producers are still missing target weights and incurring discounts. One contributing factor is the error of sampling methods that producers use to estimate the mean weight of the population to determine the optimal time to top pigs. The experiment was conducted in a commercial facility to determine the effects of added Zn on the performance of finishing pigs fed Ractopamine HCl (RAC; Paylean®; Elanco Animal Health, Greenfield, IN). Pigs were randomly assigned to pens based on gender (14 barrow pens, 11 gilt pens, and 23 mixed-gender pens), with 25 to 28 pigs per pen. A total of 210 pigs (PIC 327 × 1050, initially 15.15 lb) were used in a 29-d trial to evaluate the effects of dietary wheat middlings and NE formulation on nursery pig growth performance. Pens of pigs were balanced by initial BW and randomly allotted to 1 of 5 dietary treatments with 6 replications per treatment. A total of 180 pigs (PIC 327 × 1050, initially 26.9 lb BW) were used in a 21-d trial to evaluate the effects of increasing dietary wheat middlings (midds) and dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS) on nursery pig growth performance. Pens of pigs were balanced by initial BW and were randomly allotted to 1 of 6 dietary treatments with 5 replications per treatment. An experiment was conducted to determine the effects of increasing medium-oil dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS; 7.4% fat, 28.1% CP, 10.8% ADF, and 25.6% NDF) on growth performance and carcass traits in finishing pigs. A total of 288 pigs (PIC 327 × 1050; initially 151.8 lb) were allotted to 1 of 4 dietary treatments. Treatments consisted of a corn-soybean meal control diet or the control diet with 15, 30, or 45% medium-oil DDGS, with 8 pigs per pen and 8 replications per treatment. Increasing medium-oil DDGS decreased (linear, P<0.01) ADG and worsened (linear, P<0.02) F/G. In addition, final BW, HCW, carcass yield, and loin-eye depth decreased (linear, P<0.03), and jowl iodine value (IV) increased (linear, P<0.001) with increasing medium-oil DDGS. A total of 126 gilts and sows (PIC 1050) and their litters were used to determine the effect of dietary vitamin E level and source on sow plasma, milk, and piglet tissue concentrations of α-tocopherol. The 6 dietary treatments included 2 levels of dl-α- tocopherol acetate (Syn E) at 44 and 66 mg/kg (40,000 and 60,000 mg/ton) and 4 levels of d-α-tocopherol acetate (Nat E) at 11, 22, 33, and 44 mg/kg (10,000, 20,000, 30,000 and 40,000 mg/ton). Amino acids are the building blocks of protein and assist with metabolism in the body. In the human body, the amino acid cysteine can be synthesized from methionine by the enzyme Î¥-cystathionase. Because certain human subpopulations such as those prone to cataracts have decreased Î¥-cystathionase activity, dietary cysteine may be beneficial. Nutritionally, yogurt mix is one of the best dairy food sources of methionine and cysteine, but the heat treatment used in manufacturing yogurt decreases the dietary availability of cysteine. A meta-analysis was performed to determine the possible effects of dietary sugar on feed intake and milk production in lactating dairy cattle. The database used in this analysis included 18 treatment comparisons frozm 10 studies reported from 1985 through 2011. Treatment comparisons were used only if: (1) either sucrose (9 comparisons) or molasses (9 comparisons) replaced corn grain without adding fat; and (2) sugar added by treatment ranged from 2 to 5% of dry matter. The objective was to quantify the reinsemination intervals of lactating dairy cows that were either inseminated at estrus or received a timed AI (TAI) at first service. Cows in Experiment 1 were enrolled in a TAI program before first AI after calving. Cows detected in estrus after 50 days in milk (DIM) were inseminated, whereas the remainder continued in the TAI program and were inseminated as scheduled. A total of 1,253 pigs (PIC 1050 × 337; initially 45 lb) were used in a 104-d study to evaluate the effects of using a wet-dry (WD) or conventional dry (CD) feeder on growth performance of growing-finishing pigs. At the start of the trial, pens of pigs were weighed and randomly allotted to 1 of the 2 feeder types. A total of 204 barrows and gilts (PIC, 337 × 1050, initially 129.6 lb) were used in a 73-d study to determine the effects of replacing soybean meal (SBM) with high-protein dried distillers grains with solubles (HPDDGS) on growth performance, carcass characteristics, and carcass fat quality in finishing pigs.
