Data collected during eight groundfish surveys of the area from Nova Scotia to Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, and during five seasonal surveys of Chesapeake Bight were used to define the distribution and relative abundance of Raja eglanteria, R. garmani, R. laeuis, R erinacea, R. ocellata, R. senta, and R. radiata. Ancillary distributional data for the area from the Straits of Florida to Cape Hatteras and the areas off northern Nova Scotia and the Gulf of St. Lawrence were used qualitatively to extend the distributional study.

To estimate the effects of entrainment of Mercenaria mercenaria embryos and larvae in the cooling water systems of steam-electric power plants, we used a thermal gradient apparatus. Cleavage stages, trochophore larvae and straight-hinge veliger larvae were subjected to 11 different temperatures for 8 different time periods. There was a direct relationship of mortality with temperature increase and, at higher temperatures , with increase in time exposure. As the clams aged, temperature tolerance increased, with cleavage stages most sensitive to higher temperature and straight-hinge larvae least sensitive. Multiple regression analyses of percentage mortality on temperature and time produced estimating equations that …

Observations On Distribution And Abundance Of Red Crabs In Norfolk Canyon And Adjacent Continental Slope, Pa Haefner, Ja Musick

The results of June, 1973 trawl and trap sets in the Norfolk Canyon and adjacent slope area are summarized with respect to red crab (Geryon quinquedens) distribution and abundance. Red crabs ranged in depth from 145 to 870 fathoms but were most abundant from 145 to 280 fathoms. This species was more abundant on the adjacent slope area than in Norfolk Canyon. Crabs caught ranged from 2 to 6 inches in carapace width. Most of the crabs were in the hard shell condition but a few peeler, soft, and papershell crabs were also caught, indicating that molting was occurring. The …
