Performance And Carcass Characteristics Of Feeder Heifer Calves Fed Different Amounts Of Concentrates With Urea-Limestone Treated Corn Silage, Gordon Bobby Idol Dec 1969

Performance And Carcass Characteristics Of Feeder Heifer Calves Fed Different Amounts Of Concentrates With Urea-Limestone Treated Corn Silage, Gordon Bobby Idol

Masters Theses

Two feeding trials, one in 1967-68 and the other in 1968-69, were conducted at the University of Tennessee's Blount Farm to determine the effect of feeding different amounts of concentrates with urea-limestone treated corn silage on the performance and carcass characteristics of feeder heifer calves. A total of 288 animals were involved in the study. Treatments included delaying the feeding of a 6 lb. concentrate supplement for 0 (control), 56, 84, 112, 140 and 168 days during a period of high roughage feeding. Two other treatments involved the feeding of 2 or 4 lb. of concentrate during the entire roughage …

Environmental Modification Of Bluegill (Lepomis Macrochirus Rafinesque) In Chilhowee, Loudon, And Norris Reservoirs, Tennessee, Edward Bartlett Smythe Ii Dec 1969

Environmental Modification Of Bluegill (Lepomis Macrochirus Rafinesque) In Chilhowee, Loudon, And Norris Reservoirs, Tennessee, Edward Bartlett Smythe Ii

Masters Theses

This thesis reports the results of an investigation of environmental modifications of bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus Rafinesque) in Chilhowee, Loudon, and Norris Reservoirs. The three reservoirs are located in the Tennessee River drainage system.

The investigation was carried out between the spring of 1968 and the fall of 1969. Collecting was done by angling using both natural and artificial bait.

The evidence obtained by the investigation indicated significant differences occurred in the meristic and morphometric characters of the three bluegill populations when the data was tested statistically. It is concluded that the differences detected were probably due to environmental forces, …

Performance Of Feeder Heifers Fed Corn Silage Treated With 10, 15 And 20 Pounds Of Urea Per Ton, Kadhim Abdul Ruhman Dec 1969

Performance Of Feeder Heifers Fed Corn Silage Treated With 10, 15 And 20 Pounds Of Urea Per Ton, Kadhim Abdul Ruhman

Masters Theses

The purpose of this experiment was to determine if the amount of urea could be increased above 10 pounds per ton of corn silage without adversely affecting the acceptability of the silage or the feedlot performance of feeder heifers.

One hundred and eight feeder heifers with an average weight of 450-500 pounds were involved in a two-year experiment conducted at the University of Tennessee's Blount Farm, Knoxville. Three treatments with 10, 15 and 20 pounds per ton of urea treated corn silage were used in this two-year study.

In both trials, there were three replications (pens) per treatment with six …

Effects Of Delayed Slaughter On The Quantitative And Qualitative Traits Of Pork Carcasses, Stanley G. Miller Jun 1969

Effects Of Delayed Slaughter On The Quantitative And Qualitative Traits Of Pork Carcasses, Stanley G. Miller

Masters Theses

One hundred and twenty market hogs were used to study the effects of delayed slaughter and methods of decreasing liveweight shrinkage and deterioration of the quantitative and qualitative traits of pork carcasses. All hogs were secured from a commercial feedlot and slaughtered under commercial conditions.

Groups were held for 0, 24, 48, and 72 hours without feed. Two other groups were held for 72 hours with limited feeding to decrease liveweight shrinkage. Water was provided to all groups ad libitum.

Quantitative measurements and weights were taken to determine the effects of delayed slaughter on the important economic traits. Delayed slaughter …

A Study Of Population Density, Seasonal Movements And Weight Changes, And Winter Behavior Of The Eastern Box Turtle, Terrapene C. Carolina L., In Eastern Tennessee, Richard Albert Dolbeer Mar 1969

A Study Of Population Density, Seasonal Movements And Weight Changes, And Winter Behavior Of The Eastern Box Turtle, Terrapene C. Carolina L., In Eastern Tennessee, Richard Albert Dolbeer

Masters Theses

During 1968, a quantitative and descriptive field study was made in a 23 acre woodland on a population of the eastern box turtle. The area was systematically searched and turtles were repeatedly collected, marked, weighed, and released. Trees were marked at 256 foot intervals so that the exact location of captured turtles could be recorded. A trailing device was used to study movements of some turtles.

Smaller turtles were found to be more active in the fall as 37.3 percent of the turtles captured during September and October weighed less than 300 grams as compared to 23.3 percent during July …
