The Reveal: A Technical Study And Conservation Treatment Of An Overpaint Portrait, Camille Ferrer

Art Conservation Master's Projects

A severely damaged 19th-century oil painting depicting a portrait of a woman was treated at Patricia H. and E. Garman Art Conservation Department. A typed letter provided by the owner mentioned that it has been previously restored yet returned with unsatisfactory results. After further examination, the painting appeared to have been previously treated multiple times by different people. There was overpaint distinctly present on the face and later discovered to be present overall. The full state of condition of the painting was initially unknown due to the sum of the surface being overpainted. However, there were evidence of paint loss …

The Characterization And Electrochemistry Of Natural Uranium Dioxide Under Long-Term Disposal Conditions, Martin D. M. Badley Aug 2024

The Characterization And Electrochemistry Of Natural Uranium Dioxide Under Long-Term Disposal Conditions, Martin D. M. Badley

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This thesis describes the studies performed on a number of natural uranium dioxide (UO2) specimens to determine a range of reactivities. This work will support the safety case for the long-term disposal of spent nuclear fuel in Canada. Under relevant long-term disposal conditions, water radiolysis could produce oxidizing conditions at the surface of the fuel, potentially leading to fuel corrosion and the release of radionuclides into the groundwater. The rate of such a process would be determined by the radiation dose rate from the fuel and the reactivity of the fuel, which will be determined by its composition, …

Impaired Waters: New Treatments And Improved Methods For Pfas And Algae Toxins, Alexandria Forster Aug 2024

Impaired Waters: New Treatments And Improved Methods For Pfas And Algae Toxins, Alexandria Forster

Theses and Dissertations

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are high-profile environmental contaminants, many having long persistence in the environment and widespread presence in humans and wildlife. Following phase-out of perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) in North America and restrictions in Europe, PFAS replacements are now widely found in the environment. While liquid chromatography (LC)-mass spectrometry (MS) is typically used for measurement, much of the PFAS is missed. To more comprehensively capture organic fluorine, we developed sensitive and robust methods using activated carbon adsorption, solid phase extraction, and combustion ion chromatography (CIC) to measure total organic fluorine (TOF) in industrial wastewaters, river …

Making And Breaking Bonds: Studying Intrinsic Chemistry In The Gas-Phase, Luke Metzler Aug 2024

Making And Breaking Bonds: Studying Intrinsic Chemistry In The Gas-Phase, Luke Metzler

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The nature of chemical interactions can be difficult to ascertain in the condensed phase; chemistry can be observed, but with the plethora of variables such as solvation, mixes of counter-ions, and complex equilibria, the true intrinsic chemical properties of a given chemical species may be obfuscated. By conducting research in the gas-phase, many of these variables can be reduced, if not eliminated entirely, which can allow for the careful observation of the true physical phenomena driving chemical reactivity.

The research presented herein focuses on the use of ion-trapping (specifically in a linear ion trap) as a method for unveiling the …

Multi-Species Toxicity Testing Of Iprnhc: A Candidate For Organic Coating Enhancements, Maryam Khalilvand Nahid

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Corrosion is a natural process affecting the longevity and integrity of metals. N-Heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) are robust organic compounds that can form strong σ-bonds with metal atoms, allowing for the formation of monolayers on the metal surface. This property makes NHCs promising for coating metals. However, their long-term effects on the aquatic environment are not well understood. The present study investigated the ecotoxicity of 1,3-diisopropyl-1H-benzoimidazolium bicarbonate (iPrNHC NCO3-), a candidate for organic coating enhancements, on various species of aquatic organisms. The results showed that high concentrations of iPrNHC significantly increased mortality rates in zebrafish embryos, planarians, Daphnia, …

Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) have become promising candidates for various biomedical applications due to their unique physicochemical properties and biocompatibility. Nevertheless, the efficacy of AuNPs in these applications highly relies on their stability and ability to maintain their desired properties within the complex environment of the human body. This thesis investigates the stability and aggregation behavior of citrate-coated AuNPs in in-vitro physiological environments and nitrogen heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-coated gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) in water over time. Analytical techniques such as electrophoretic mobility, dynamic light scattering, and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry were employed. It was shown that cell media (in contrast to …

Assessing The Reactivity Of Amino Acids To Chlorination Using Capillary Electrophoresis, Pedro De Allende Aug 2024

Assessing The Reactivity Of Amino Acids To Chlorination Using Capillary Electrophoresis, Pedro De Allende

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

Amino acids (AA) are ubiquitous in wastewater systems. One of the most popular wastewater treatments is chlorination which is effective at eradicating bacteria and overall treating the wastewater, but it can also produce disinfection by-products (DBPs). Certain DBPs have been classified as Class B Carcinogens to humans and are therefore highly regulated and monitored. Past studies have shown that natural organic matter (NOM), specifically amino acids, can be precursors to DBPs if chlorinated to the correct dose. This thesis project explored AA chlorination's mechanism(s) to understand further which products arise. In particular, the investigation detailed which steps of the mechanism …

Method Development For The Quantification Of Critically Valuable Elements In Permian Basin Produced Waters, Carley Oliver

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Produced waters (PW) are a major byproduct of the oil and gas industrial hydraulic fracturing processes that create a major waste disposal issue with a need for disposal, treatment, and reuse method developments. The current primary disposal method is subsurface injection, which can lead to high pressures in the subsurface. PWs are often highly saline from mineral leaching due to long residence in subsurface reservoirs. According to the USGS National Minerals Information Center, bromine, calcium chloride, iodine, lithium, magnesium, and sodium chloride have been found in and extracted from these domestic subsurface brines, suggesting that there may be other economically …

High-Resolution Ion Mobility Analysis Of Isomeric Bile Acids Using Structures For Lossless Ion Manipulations (Slim) Im-Ms, Emmaleigh D. Efird

All Theses

Bile acids are an essential part of the human digestion system and play an important role in lipid absorption, bacteria movement in the small intestine, and regulation of the farnesoid X receptor (FXR) and G protein-coupled bile acid receptors (GPBAR) responsible for homeostasis. They are synthesized in the liver, stored in the gallbladder and the excess is carried on to the small intestine. Many liver and intestinal diseases are diagnosed based on bile acid metabolism pathways and the structures of those bile acids. Therefore, the bile acid structure determines the function of the molecule. Many bile acids are similar in …

The Analysis Of Artificially Flavored Coffees, Hannah Knights Jul 2024

The Analysis Of Artificially Flavored Coffees, Hannah Knights

Longwood Senior Thesis Proposal

This project aims to determine the molecular components that give artificially flavored coffees their advertised flavor. Much work has been conducted to determine various characteristics such as antioxidant properties, phenolic compounds, flavors, and aromas found in natural coffees. In addition, there is ample literature on the results of sensory tests for a variety of commercial coffees. However, not much work has been conducted to determine the compounds found in artificially flavored coffees that give rise to their distinctive aroma and flavor. This is, perhaps, due to the proprietary nature of the flavoring process employed by commercial producers. The goal of …

Chemistry Publications

Cassava is the third most significant calorie source in the tropics. Its processing has changed from traditional methods to stainless steel processing machines. This study investigated the influence of cassava on metal release from two common stainless steels, ASTM 304 and 201, with and without friction, and on tribocorrosion (multianalytically) of 304. Cassava was relatively corrosive and hindered repassivation of the surface oxide of stainless steel, but it also acted as a lubricant against mechanical friction. The combined action of friction and cassava caused a significant increase in iron, chromium, nickel, and manganese release from the stainless steels (30–35- fold …

In Situ Diffuse Reflectance Spectroelectrochemistry Of Cathode Materials In Lithium-Ion Batteries, Lu-Lu Chen, Hao-Ran Li, Wei-Yi Liu, Wei Wang

Journal of Electrochemistry

Developing in situ spectroelectrochemistry methods, which can provide detailed information about species transformation during electrochemical reactions, is very important for studying electrode reaction mechanisms and improving battery performance. Studying real-time changes in the surface of electrode materials during normal operation can be an effective way to assess and optimize the practical performance of electrode materials, thus, in situ and in operando characterization techniques are particularly important. However, batteries are hard to be studied by in situ characterization measurements due to their hermetically sealed shells, and there is still much room for battery characterizations. In this work, a specially designed battery …

Implementing 1.5 Millimeter Internal Diameter Columns And A Portable Capillary Column Instrument Into Monoclonal Antibody Analytical Workflows, Benjamin Libert Jun 2024

Implementing 1.5 Millimeter Internal Diameter Columns And A Portable Capillary Column Instrument Into Monoclonal Antibody Analytical Workflows, Benjamin Libert

Theses and Dissertations

Using 1.5 mm inner diameter (i.d.) columns to bridge the gap between routinely used 2.1 mm i.d. columns and capillary bore columns allows for a sequential but significant increase in performance without the need for specialized equipment associated with very low dispersion liquid chromatography (LC) systems. These 1.5 mm i.d. columns balance an increase in sensitivity compared to 2.1 mm i.d. columns (theoretically doubling the time-domain peak area in mass sensitive detectors for the same mass load), while mitigating the efficiency losses due to extra-column dispersion effects that are commonly observed with 1.0 mm i.d. columns. Here, the use of …

Production Of The Siderophore Lysochelin In Rich Media Through Maltose-Promoted High-Density Growth Of Lysobacter Sp. 3655, Fang Zhang, Jia Liu, Lin Jiang, Yongbiao Zheng, Lingjun Yu, Liangcheng Du

Chemistry Department: Faculty Publications

Siderophores are produced by bacteria in iron-restricted conditions. However, we found maltose could induce the biosynthesis of the siderophore lysochelin in Lysobacter sp. 3655 in rich media that are not compatible with siderophore production. Maltose markedly promoted cell growth, with over 300% increase in cell density (OD600) when LB medium was added with maltose (LBM). While lysochelin was not detectable when OD600 in LBM was below 5.0, the siderophore was clearly produced when OD600 reached 7.5 and dramatically increased when OD600 was 15.0. Coincidently, the transcription of lysochelin biosynthesis genes was remarkably enhanced following the …

Molecular-Level Studies Of Nanopatterned Biomolecules With Atomic Force Microscopy, Ashley R. Walker

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Atomic force microscopy (AFM) is an analytical technique in which a tipped probe is gently scanned across the surface in a raster pattern to generate digital images of a sample at the nanoscale. The AFM instrument has three general operational modes, which are contact, non-contact and tapping-mode, that can be used to examine materials at the atomic level. Single-molecular details of biological molecules and other soft organic materials can be captured with minimal denaturation in either ambient or liquid environments when using tapping-mode AFM. In tapping-mode, the probe is driven to oscillate vertically while the tip is scanned across the …

Probing The Surface Structure Of Ferrocene Modified Electrodes Using Cyclic Voltammetry, Rebekah S. Stanley May 2024

Probing The Surface Structure Of Ferrocene Modified Electrodes Using Cyclic Voltammetry, Rebekah S. Stanley

Reviews, Analyses, and Instructional Studies in Electrochemistry (RAISE)

Modifying electrodes imparts new electrochemical properties for use in various applications. To fully understand these electrochemical properties the structure of the modified surface needs to be characterized. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) offers a quick and simple way to determine if the surface structure has been homogeneously modified even at low surface concentrations. Nonideal responses in CV scans give insights to the microenvironments and structure of the monolayer surface that may be indistinguishable in other techniques. Peak fitting CV data, coupled with other surface techniques, can further characterize the contributions and nature of these microenvironments and aid in structural determination.

An Overview Of How To Measure The Kinetic Properties Of An Anode Material For The Chlorine Evolution Reaction, Cameron Vann May 2024

An Overview Of How To Measure The Kinetic Properties Of An Anode Material For The Chlorine Evolution Reaction, Cameron Vann

Reviews, Analyses, and Instructional Studies in Electrochemistry (RAISE)

The process of generating chlorine gas using electrolysis in aqueous systems is well established. However, a new process requires chlorine to be generated at high temperatures using molten salt. This harsh environment requires a new study of anode materials for the chlorine evolution reaction. Anode materials can be compared by their kinetic parameters, the transfer coefficient α and the exchange current i0. The basic theory of these properties as they relate to the chlorine evolution reaction has been detailed and an analysis method for finding these effective parameters has been shown and demonstrated.

Model To Demonstrate Effects Of Mass Transfer And Applied Current In An Electrolytic Cell, George Ankrah May 2024

Model To Demonstrate Effects Of Mass Transfer And Applied Current In An Electrolytic Cell, George Ankrah

Reviews, Analyses, and Instructional Studies in Electrochemistry (RAISE)

This study investigates the relationship between applied current and resulting cell potential in an electrolytic system, considering the transport of electroactive species. By applying Michael Faraday's laws of electrolysis and the Nernst-Planck equation, the behavior of electroactive species in diffusion-controlled systems with and without stirring is modeled. The plots demonstrate how stirring enhances ion transport and establishes a stable Nernst diffusion layer, affecting the kinetics of electrochemical reactions. Understanding these dynamics is crucial for optimizing electrolysis processes.
