What is an sdRNA? Noncoding RNA (ncRNA) is a class of RNA that includes microRNA (miRNA) and small nucleolar RNA (snoRNA). Fragments excised from ncRNAs are known as noncodingderived RNA (ndRNA). A certain class of ndRNAs that are derived from snoRNAs have been denoted as Small Nucleolar Derived RNAs (sdRNAs). Our lab has previously hypothesized and demonstrated that sdRNAs display regulatory functions on target genes, similar to the functions of miRNAs. sdRNAs are almost identical to microRNAs and differ mainly in their source of origin.
Our lab has shown that sdRNA-93 is frequently misexpressed in breast cancer cell lines and …

Hospitals have recorded immunocompromised patients to be highly susceptible to hospital acquired infections caused by yeasts and molds. Successfully identifying such pathogens is important for the rapid diagnosis and treatment of these infections, marking the significance of this study. Since 2010, Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization-Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) has made mold identification more efficient but its usage in clinical laboratories is widely restricted. With an aim to understand this paradox, this meta-narrative review investigates the limited use of MALDI-TOF MS in mold identification, including factors affecting the accuracy and preparation of specimens. PubMed Central Database was …

A Guidebook For The Utility Of Msk Ultrasound In Occupational Therapy Practice: An Educational Guidebook Series, Alanna Arceneaux, Mary Ann Smith, Bert Lindsey
Spring 2024 Virtual OTD Capstone Symposium
Musculoskeletal (MSK) ultrasound is expanding to non-physician rehabilitation providers, and occupational therapy has a clear role in using and facilitating MSK ultrasound that will drastically shape treatment plans and client satisfaction. With increased knowledge of impeding factors, occupational therapists can enforce their role by teaching new skills and techniques to enhance functional mobility and simultaneously assist in completing activities of daily living (ADLs). This capstone aims to understand, develop, and enhance the role of occupational therapy in MSK ultrasound to increase early detection of orthopedic conditions impacting ADLs, which will decrease hospital readmission rates. MSK ultrasound is a safe imaging …

The Role Of Computed Tomography In Diagnosis Of A Stroke, Gabriella Gaglia
The Role Of Computed Tomography In Diagnosis Of A Stroke, Gabriella Gaglia
Student Research Poster Presentations 2024
A stroke can be defined as a neurological deficit attributed to an acute focal injury of the central nervous system (CNS). There are two types of strokes, and these include ischemic and hemorrhagic. An ischemic stroke is caused by a lack of blood flow to the brain. A hemorrhagic stroke is due to a burst or rupture of a blood vessel within the brain. Computed tomography (CT) is the ideal imaging study done when diagnosing strokes in patients. The importance of quickly diagnosing a stroke and determining which type the person has experienced is one reason why CT scans are …

Advancing School Nursing Practice: A Novel Approach To Screening For Gastrointestinal Disorders In Children, Ashley Bunting, Isabella Cavlan
Nursing | Student Research Posters
California schools currently only screen for vision and hearing, leaving many other health concerns unaddressed. Among these, gastrointestinal (GI) health is particularly significant, as digestive disorders can lead to severe consequences, like malnutrition and stunted growth. By incorporating routine GI screenings, school nurses can promote the early detection of disease, allowing for timely intervention and improved health outcomes in children.
Based on existing literature, we have developed a novel pediatric GI screening tool for school nurses to use in routine screenings, presented below.

Patient is a 56-year-old male with a past medical history of type 2 diabetes, hypertension, prior MVA with chest trauma, and coronary artery disease with 2 prior stents in the obtuse marginal and right coronary artery who was brought to the ED for severe chest pain. Patient was immediately taken to the cath lab for cardiac intervention. Patient was identified to have 90-95% stenosis of his left circumflex but was unable to be stented due to tortuosity of the vessel and tight lesion. Due to patient’s multivessel coronary artery disease and newly diagnosed diabetes, patient was referred to cardiothoracic surgery …

Development And Validation Of A Novel Skin Pigment Scale, Christina Guo, Henry Lim, Christopher Wong, Christian Scheufele, Michael Carletti, Michele L. Mccarroll, Stephen Weis
North Texas GME Research Forum 2024
Background: Precise description of the skin is a pillar of dermatology. For dermatologists, skin pigment is akin to a ‘vital sign’ in that it represents a basic, yet illuminating, piece of information for each patient. The current method used to describe skin color is the Fitzpatrick scale. The Fitzpatrick scale was designed to measure skin burning and the scale is inadequate for precise measurement of skin color in a diverse population. The prevalence of its use perpetuates harmful and outdated structures and contributes to health disparity. For those reasons, there is a critical need for initiatives that evaluate the current …

Colovaginal Fistula In A Patient Without A Hysterectomy, Austin Moore, Mollie Ahn, Anthony Macaluso
North Texas GME Research Forum 2024
Introduction: A majority of case reports and review studies exploring the incidence of colovaginal fistulas typically involve patients of older age with a history of both a hysterectomy and at least one episode of symptomatic diverticular disease. Colovaginal fistulas rarely occur in patients who have not had a prior hysterectomy. Case Description: A 52 year old female presented to colorectal surgery clinic with a history of multiple episodes of sigmoid diverticulitis who now had passage of air and stool from her vagina. She was confirmed to have evidence of a colovaginal fistula from her sigmoid colon to her …

Comparing Large Language Models Accuracy In Following Interval Surveillance Colonoscopy Guidelines, Olufemi Osikoya, Gregory Brennan
North Texas GME Research Forum 2024
Introduction: Providing pathology results and appropriate recommendations after resection of colon polyps is mandatory. Large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT and Google Bard, have shown promise in clinical workflows such as pathology results letters. We tested whether LLMs could provide appropriate surveillance recommendations based on current guidelines from the US multi-society task force for post-colonoscopy follow-up. Methods: Our aim was to compare the accuracy of ChatGPT 3.5, ChatGPT 4, and Google Bard in providing appropriate interval surveillance recommendations. An example prompt being “Write a patient pathology result letter after a colonoscopy with one tubular adenoma polyp (< 10mm) resected. Include recommendations for when the next surveillance colonoscopy should be completed.” Seventeen different post polypectomy surveillance queries and responses were analyzed (correct, partially correct, incorrect) compared to USMSTF guidelines. Results: When …
