The Masterless Society: Observations On American Democracy By Alexis De Tocqueville, James Tyrie Jr.
The Masterless Society: Observations On American Democracy By Alexis De Tocqueville, James Tyrie Jr.
Government theses
French political theorist Alexis de Tocqueville’s views concerning American democracy were examined in order to discern key aspects of democratic thought and practice in America. Tocqueville found certain fundamental premises such as individual freedom and “equality of conditions” at the base of democracy in America. From these basic premises come several paradoxical results, namely the masterless society, economic materialism and “tyranny of the majority.” These paradoxes are controlled by safeguards of associations, the press and the judiciary within the system. It was found that Tocqueville’s detachment and foresight give his thought greater meaning than that of many contemporary social and …

A Systems Analysis Of Albuquerque's Rescue Service, Leslie Paul Page Iii
A Systems Analysis Of Albuquerque's Rescue Service, Leslie Paul Page Iii
American Studies ETDs
This research involves a systems analysis of Albuquerque's Rescue Services System. The Rescue Services System transforms the input 11medical emergency11 into an 11emergency met11, the output. To understand this emergency medical services system, four algorithmic procedures are applied. First, the system is defined in terms of how it ought to function, termed its normative state. The system definition is based on defining (1) the four subsystems comprising the Rescue Services System, (2) the basic input and output of each, (3) the primary subsystem elements which interact to produce the desired output, and (4) the subsystem interactions which transform the input …

Wit And Humor In The Slave Narratives, Daryl Cumber Dance
Wit And Humor In The Slave Narratives, Daryl Cumber Dance
English Faculty Publications
This passage suggests something of the nature of Black humor and the function it has served, not only in the slave narratives, but in the folk tales and throughout the history of recorded literature from William Wells Brown to Amiri Baraka. The life revealed in all of these sources is shown to often be alternately degrading and courageous, tragic and absurdly comic, hopeless and yet enduring; indeed that life could hardly ever be termed merely amusing. And the Black character, though he may be seen to laugh, can hardly be deemed carefree, unbothered, satisfied, even truly happy. Indeed the paradox …

"Introduction" To The Great Plains: Environment And Culture, Frederick C. Luebke
"Introduction" To The Great Plains: Environment And Culture, Frederick C. Luebke
Department of History: Faculty Publications
In the pages that follow I have summarized the views of certain selected scholars whose emphases seem to illustrate changing and contrasting interpretations of the interaction of environment and culture on the Great Plains. I have grouped their writings into two inclusive categories. First come those whose conceptual schemes suggest the primacy of environmental variables. I refer to these scholars, perhaps simplistically, as environmentalists, even though this term has acquired a different meaning in recent years. In the second group are several scholars, selected more arbitrarily than the first, whose writings seem to accord more importance to cultural factors. For …

On March 2 and 3, 1977, an archaeological survey of the area surrounding Tule Lake, in Corpus Christi, Texas, was conducted by the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio. The reconnaissance was authorized by the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers, Galveston District, prior to disposal of fill resulting from harbor dredging activities. Mr. William Sky Eagle of the Corpus Christi office of the Corps provided us with detailed locational information, and Mr. David Espy, a Corpus Christi resident and avocational archaeologist, informed us of local activities and discoveries, as well as opening his own …

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State
In mid-February, 1977, an archaeological field team from the Center for Archaeological Research, The University of Texas at San Antonio, conducted investigations at prehistoric site 41 MV 57 in Maverick County, Texas. The site is located along a tributary of Seco Creek and is to be modified by the installation of a sewage collection system (the Seco Mines Project).
