Some Improvable Points For Better Utilization Of Reed Canarygrass Cultivars In Japan, T Otani, M Ito, Y Maeda, Y Kurihara

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

Relationships among growth stage, herbage quality, and dry matter accumulation of reed canarygrass cultivars were investigated in a rainy mountainous district of Japan. Fiber content accumulated during the primary growth correlated with some growth characters of this grass, especially with preferential culm expansion, so that total amount of cell wall constituents reached a remarkably high level about the time when culm/foliage (C/F) ratio in dry matter was elevated above 1.5. In aftermaths, whose early regrowth went on rather quickly, dry matter accumulation began to decline at the stage that C/F ratio of standing crop became ca. 1.0 and fiber content …

The Drought Resistance Mechanism Of Phalaris Arundinacea L., Qi Guang, Zhou Bibua Jun 2024

The Drought Resistance Mechanism Of Phalaris Arundinacea L., Qi Guang, Zhou Bibua

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

The measurement of morphological and physiological indices of Phalaris arundinacea to drying and irrigation treatments and in natural field conditions (ck) were conducted in tillering stage and stem elongation stage. Results show that plants in the drying treatment, compared with plants in the irrigation treatment and control, that their single plant leaf area, plant height, chlorophyll content, intensity of photosynthesis, stomatal area and plant yields were decreased, but the intensity of respiration increased. Through statistic analysis, none of those indices, except stomatal area, were significantly different. It indicates that the species of Phalaris arundinacea is strongly drought resistant and could …

The Assimilating And Benefit Of The Chinese Reed Canarygrass (Phalaris Arundinacea L.) On Soil Nutrition, Zhou Bihua, Qi Guang Jun 2024

The Assimilating And Benefit Of The Chinese Reed Canarygrass (Phalaris Arundinacea L.) On Soil Nutrition, Zhou Bihua, Qi Guang

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

The Chinese Reed Canarygrass (Phalaris arundinacea L.) is a fine perennial herbage of Gramineae. The wild ripened seeds were collected and sown on the experimental field of the Zhelimu Animal Husbandry College. The former plant of experimental plot is Chinese Crabapple and the cultivating layer is light loam with pH 8.7. The content of nitric N is 33.58 kg/ha, amino N 42.54 kg/ha, organic P 5.6 kg/ha, k 55.97 kg/ha. Clones were set up according to different compositions, that is N, P, K, WP, NPK, CK. the total amount of fertilizer is 23.8 g. The coefficient of absorbing and …

Developmental Characteristics And Renovating Pattern Of Reed Canarygrass Shoots In A Sward, M Ito, S Mizuno, T Otani, S Kobayashi Apr 2024

Developmental Characteristics And Renovating Pattern Of Reed Canarygrass Shoots In A Sward, M Ito, S Mizuno, T Otani, S Kobayashi

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

Developmental and renovating traits of shoots were investigated ecomorphologically in a reed canarygrass (Phalaris arundinacea L., cv. Palaton) sward harvested 3 times per year. Reed canarygrass shoots exhibited notably high growth rates both in the 1st and 2nd crops together with rapid leaf formation (around 7 days/leaf) and active internode elongation. Vigorously growing shoots, which regenerated soon after the 1st cutting and dominated in the 2nd crop canopy, mainly originated from the stubble formed with 3 to 4 phytomers that developed after the beginning of spring growth, thus resulting in higher shoot density than that of the 1st crop. …

Chemical Composition And Response To Dilute-Acid Pretreatment And Enzymatic Saccharification Of Alfalfa, Reed Canarygrass, And Switchgrass, Bruce S. Dien, Hans-Joachim G. Jung, Kenneth P. Vogel, Michael D. Casler, Joann F. S. Lamb, Loren Iten, Robert C. Mitchell, Gautum Sarath Jan 2006

Chemical Composition And Response To Dilute-Acid Pretreatment And Enzymatic Saccharification Of Alfalfa, Reed Canarygrass, And Switchgrass, Bruce S. Dien, Hans-Joachim G. Jung, Kenneth P. Vogel, Michael D. Casler, Joann F. S. Lamb, Loren Iten, Robert C. Mitchell, Gautum Sarath

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Alfalfa stems, reed canarygrass, and switchgrass; perennial herbaceous species that have potential as biomass energy crops in temperate regions; were evaluated for their bioconversion potential as energy crops. Each forage species was harvested at two or three maturity stages and analyzed for carbohydrates, lignin, protein, lipid, organic acids, and mineral composition. The biomass samples were also evaluated for sugar yields following pretreatment with dilute sulfuric followed by enzymatic saccharification using a commercial cellulase preparation. Total carbohydrate content of the plants varied from 518 to 655 g kg-1 dry matter (DM) and cellulose concentration from 209 to 322 g kg …
