Effect Of Host Condition On The Clover Root Borer, K. P. Pruess Dec 1958

Effect Of Host Condition On The Clover Root Borer, K. P. Pruess

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Oviposition by the clover root borer, Hylastinus obscurus (Marsham), is completed earlier in weakened than in vigorous plants, but development is more rapid in vigorous or lightly infested roots. High populations occurring early in the season result in plant mortality with subsequently slowed borer development.

Acreage Reserve Participation In South Dakota Wheat Areas, Allan M. Severson Dec 1958

Acreage Reserve Participation In South Dakota Wheat Areas, Allan M. Severson

Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)

The Agricultural Act of 1956, which contains the Soil Bank Act, was enacted in the spring of 1956. The soil bank program is divided into two phases, the acreage reserve and the conservation reserve. The acreage reserve is available to farmers with acreage allotments for the basic commodities, which are wheat and corn in South Dakota. The farmer takes part in the acreage reserve program by signing a one-year agreement with his Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Committee (hereafter referred to as the ASC Committee) and reducing his acreage below the assigned allotment on his farm. In return for taking the …

Climatic Variations In South Dakota 1900 - 1950, Robert M. Basile Sep 1958

Climatic Variations In South Dakota 1900 - 1950, Robert M. Basile

Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)

Most of South Dakota lies within the Great Plains of the United States. Thus, the climate of South Dakota, like that of the Great Plains, has been one of relatively little precipitation and frequent droughts. However, periods of rather high rainfall have led to considerable optimism. Likewise droughts like those of the 1930's may have led to too much pessimism. What is the real picture of the variability of South Dakota climate? The purpose of this pamphlet is to help answer this question. No one knows with certainty what will happen in the future. The best indication of what can …

Marketing Northern Alfalfa Seed: A Progress Report, Dale C. Dahl Sep 1958

Marketing Northern Alfalfa Seed: A Progress Report, Dale C. Dahl

Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)

Alfalfa seed has become a farm crop of increasing importance. Total hay acreage in the United States has remained practically unchanged during the past two decades, but alfalfa hay, during this period, has increased by over 100 percent. Accompanying this increased acreage in alfalfa hay, total alfalfa seed production for the United States has nearly tripled. In turn, the incomes of farmers engaged in alfalfa seed production have multiplied approximately three times during the past twenty years. Alfalfa seed is not a homogeneous product. For many years it has been agronomically grouped into "hardy" and "non-hardy" alfalfa seed. The term …

Spice Talk, Kay Nelson Aug 1958

Spice Talk, Kay Nelson

SDSU Extension Circulars

Historians believe that spices were used long before the time of written records. They reason that pre-historic man wrapped leaves around meat in order to keep it clean while cooking in a hot pit; as a result he had the pleasant discovery of newly-flavored meat. Spices are native to many lands, as shown on the map, which makes it impossible to say exactly where this first occurred. We do know, from the hieroglyphics on the walls of the pyramids to the scriptures of the Bible, that spices shared a most important influence on the lives of the ancient Greek and …

Agricultural Drought In South Dakota: How Many Droughty Days Per Season?, Ray F. Pengra Jul 1958

Agricultural Drought In South Dakota: How Many Droughty Days Per Season?, Ray F. Pengra

Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)

The purpose of this study was to determine the likelihood of different numbers of drought days per season in ten selected areas of South Dakota using weather data accumulated by the Weather Bureau. Information on the likelihood of drought within the Great Plains is of primary importance for any type of farming. For the prospective irrigation area in central South Dakota such information is essential to determine the extent of irrigation needed and the type of irrigation that will be best adapted to the needs of the area.

Economic And Legal Aspects Of Vertical Integration, Dale C. Dale Jul 1958

Economic And Legal Aspects Of Vertical Integration, Dale C. Dale

Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)

Vertical integration, on the other hand, is the grouping of two or more complementary firms on different levels of the production-marketing process. For example, a processor and a farmer may unite or a supplier, farmer, processor and wholesaler may combine under centralized management. The key idea is the extent of control that can be exercised by the central decision maker or "integrator," It is important to understand that vertical integration is concerned only with single enterprises or single commodities at the present time. A multi-enterprise farmer may integrate only part of his farming operation. A farmer who deals in wheat, …

Beef Performance Testing On Farm And Ranch, Henry Holzman

SDSU Extension Circulars

This circular has been prepared to assist in answering the increasing number of questions being asked by producers of commercial and purebred cattle about the methods, principles and values of the Performance Test for beef cattle. Performance testing is nothing new. Improvement in livestock ever since the beginning of the various breeds, has been due to some form of performance test. Such tests have been based on either observation or some form of records. Knowledge of underlying principles and the relative value of different methods has, until recent years, been lacking in beef cattle testing. Research projects conducted during the …

"The 4th H is Health." Your 4-H pledge says, "I pledge my Health to better living." This means that you must develop good health habits. Because your health is effected by your habits, this unit of the 4-H health activity is devoted to the study of personal health habits. You are expected to study your habits, determine ways for improvement and to correct some of your faults. Usually, it is advisable to try to change only a few faults at a time; rather than all of them at once. If you continuously work at self improvement, you will be surprised …

Although Federal grain standards for Hard Red Winter Wheat were revised in 1957, a Nebraska Experiment Station study shows that the new regulations had very little effect on grades received by wheat marketed at country points by Nebraska farmers in 1957. Results of the study are described in this circular.

Farm Business Management Data And Practices In South Dakota: 1956 Annual Report, Charles H. Benrud, Roland Brunsma

Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)

This project, "Farm Business Management Data and Practices", was set up to begin in 1955, with farmers and ranchers in the seven "types-of-farming areas" in South Dakota keeping records on receipts, expenses, inventories, and other items and having their books analyzed by the Agricultural Experiment Station Economics Department at the end of the year. Only a few participated the first year, but in 1956 a total of 57 cooperators turned in record books for analysis. The purpose of this project if to obtain data on costs, returns, and organization on farms and ranches of various types in the different types-of-farming …
