Use Of Discriminant Analysis For Selection Of Hybrid Maize Parent Lines, Ahmet Öz Jan 2012

Use Of Discriminant Analysis For Selection Of Hybrid Maize Parent Lines, Ahmet Öz

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

This study was conducted to investigate the opportunity to utilize discriminant analysis in the selection of parent lines in hybrid maize breeding. For this purpose, top crosses were obtained by top-crossing 31 inbred maize lines with the FRMo.17 line in 2003. These hybrids were subjected to preyield trials in 2004. The same lines were subjected to observation tests in 2003 and 2004, and yield and yield components were determined. The obtained data were analyzed using the discriminant analysis method. The distances between the lines were determined according to D2 and canonical values. The TK-108, TK-110, TK-13, TK-347, TK-175, TK-157, and …

A field trial with the application of 3 rates (0, 5, and 20 t ha^{-1}) of hydratized calcite (73% CaO + 2%-3% MgO + 21% H_2O) was set up in the spring of 2006. The experiment area had 3 plots of 630 m2. Each plot was divided into 4 subplots for replications. Over the next 2 years, the residual effects of liming on plant yield and nutrient uptake were investigated using maize hybrid OsSK499 in 2006 and 2007 and soybean variety Ika in 2008. The ear leaves of maize at flowering (mid-July 2006 and 2007) were analyzed for P, K, …

Identification And Purity Testing Of Maize Hybrids With One Parent In Common By Ultrathin-Layer Isoelectric Focusing Of Seed Salt-Soluble Proteins, Xiao-Yue Dou, Min Yan, Yu-Feng Xu, Khalid Hussain, Yuan-Zhi Liu, Feng Lin Jan 2012

Identification And Purity Testing Of Maize Hybrids With One Parent In Common By Ultrathin-Layer Isoelectric Focusing Of Seed Salt-Soluble Proteins, Xiao-Yue Dou, Min Yan, Yu-Feng Xu, Khalid Hussain, Yuan-Zhi Liu, Feng Lin

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

The objective of this study was to discriminate 11 maize hybrids with one parent in common using ultrathin-layer isoelectric focusing (UTLIEF) of seed salt-soluble proteins in 0.02% NaCl solution in the laboratory. Thirty-two protein bands were found in the pH range of 5.0-7.0, 62.5% of which were polymorphic. Six hybrids with the same male parent and 5 hybrids with the same female parent were differentiated by their patterns and numbers of polymorphic protein bands. The result showed that UTLIEF has the characteristics of high resolution to discriminate close genetic relationships. Meanwhile, the genetic purity of 11 hybrids were tested, and …

Comparison Of Hybrid Maize Obtained From Inbred Lines That Are Selected Via Top-Crossing And Discriminant Analysis, Ahmet Öz Jan 2012

Comparison Of Hybrid Maize Obtained From Inbred Lines That Are Selected Via Top-Crossing And Discriminant Analysis, Ahmet Öz

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

This research was done at the Black Sea Agricultural Research Institute in Samsun, in 2006 and 2007. The study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of discriminant analysis in determining the parents among inbred lines in hybrid corn breeding. Grain yield and some yield components of the hybrid maize, which was obtained from inbred lines that were selected in accordance with top-crossing and discriminant analysis, was examined in the research. According to the average of 2 years, the average grain yield of 11 maize hybrids obtained via top-crossing was 9160 kg ha^{-1}, whereas the average grain yield of 8 maize …
