Research On Antifungal And Inhibitory Effects Of Dl-Limonene On Some Yeasts, Mustafa Ümi̇t Ünal, Fi̇li̇z Uçan, Aysun Şener, Sadik Di̇nçer

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

This study was undertaken to investigate the antifungal effect of DL-limonene on yeasts using disk diffusion and the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). The effect of DL-limonene on ethyl alcohol fermentation by Saccharomyces cerevisiae was also investigated. According to disk diffusion results, the development of an inhibition zone was observed in all microorganisms tested. The inhibition zones were larger than those occurring with the Fungizone antibiotic used as the control. Inhibition zone diameters increased with increasing amounts of DL-limonene. Correlation Between The Protein Content And Mechanical Properties Of Wheat, Mehmet Başlar, Fati̇h Kalkan, Mazhar Kara, Mustafa Fati̇h Ertugay

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

The mechanical properties of wheat varieties are important in the milling industry. This study investigated the correlation between the protein content of 5 wheat varieties and their mechanical properties of rupture force, energy absorbed, and hardness. Based on correlation coefficients, a strong correlation was found between the protein content of all wheat varieties investigated and their mechanical properties. The correlation levels between the protein content and rupture force, energy absorbed, and hardness were r = 0.953, 0.883, and 0.884 for X-X load orientation and r = 0.955, 0.963, and 0.954 for Y-Y load orientation, respectively.

To study the effects of seed priming with solutions of Fe and B, each at concentrations of 0.5%, 1%, 1.5%, and 2%, and 1.5% Fe + 1% B, on the germination and yield of dill (Anethum graveolens), 2 separate laboratory and field experiments were conducted. The results of the laboratory experiments indicated that the effect of the studied treatments on the final germination percentage was significant. The seedling vigor index of dill was restricted when the Fe and B concentrations increased beyond 1.5% and 1%, respectively. A field experiment including 3 sainfoin cultivars (Makedonka, EG Norm, and the Sokobanja population) was set up in a seed production trial with the aim of determining adequate row spacing for seed and forage yield. The prevalence of Potato spindle tuber pospiviroid (PSTVd) infection in randomly selected potato tubers was determined via nonisotopic dot blot hybridization and reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). In January and February of 2010, 168 seedling tubers of Solanum tuberosum, representing 27 cultivars, were received from different seedling potato producers in Turkey. Digoxigenin-labeled RNA probes of PSTVd were synthesized from the cloned PCR products and applied in dot blot hybridization to detect viroids in RNA extracts isolated from dormant potato tubers. In this study, the water saving and conservation potential of various furrow irrigation management techniques for irrigated cotton were compared. Conventional every-furrow irrigation with open-end furrows (EFO) and blocked-end furrows (EFB), and alternate every-other-furrow management with open-end furrows (AFO) and blocked-end furrows (AFB), were considered. Considerable seasonal water savings were obtained with AFO and AFB flows, on average from 717 mm to 906 mm, respectively, when compared to EFO. Results of a study designed to examine the behavior of gabion-stepped weirs for energy dissipation are presented in this paper. Laboratory tests were conducted with 8 physical models consisting of 3 different porosities (38%, 40%, and 42%) and 2 slopes (1:1 and 1:2). An iron plate was also placed on each horizontal and vertical step to study and classify the effect of step porosity on the energy dissipation rate. Stem rust, caused by the fungus Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici (Pgt), is one of the most important diseases limiting wheat production in Turkey. Surveys were conducted in 2007 and 2008 in order to determine the races of the pathogen present in Turkey. In 2007, it was found that 91 (43%) out of 207 inspected wheat fields were infected with stem rust, and in 2008, it was found that 61 (25%) out of 242 inspected fields were infected. Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) callus cultures grown in the presence of different concentrations (0-100 µM) of cadmium were assayed for growth, Cd accumulations, and antioxidative responses. Cadmium inhibited the growth of calli by 25% and 46% at 75 and 100 µM Cd concentrations, respectively. Cadmium concentration in the calli increased with an increased Cd supply in the growth medium. Calli accumulated 334 mg Cd kg^{-1} of their dry weight at 100 µM Cd. Cadmium induced oxidative stress, which was indicated by modulating antioxidant (glutathione and \alpha-tocopherol) levels and antioxidative enzymes. The rootstock potential of 21 bottle gourds (Lagenaria siceraria) collected from the Mediterranean region (Turkey) was investigated for watermelon with regard to plant growth, yield, and fruit quality. This study, performed on a soil that is classified as Albic Luvisols that developed on loamy sands overlying loamy material (1.4% organic matter and pH 6.5), concerns the impact of tillage systems on soil properties and the yield of spring barley. Pattern analysis, cluster and ordination techniques were applied to grain yield data of 24 cultivars of 2- and 6-rowed barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) grown in 26 environments in Turkey during 2004-2008 to identify patterns of genotype (G), environment (E) and genotype × environment interaction (GEI) in barley multi-environment trials (METs). Analysis of variance showed that 86.9% of the total sum of squares was accounted for by E. Of the remaining sum of squares, the contribution of GEI was almost 9 times that of the contribution of G alone. The genetic diversity of Pyrenophora graminea, the causal agent of barley leaf stripe disease, was characterized by restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) of the rDNA internal transcribed spacer region and intersimple sequence repeat (ISSR) analysis. A total of 45 P. graminea isolates recovered from different geographic origins and barley cultivars or genotypes produced identical RFLP banding patterns with HinfI, MspI, Hin6I and BsuRI restriction enzymes. ISSR analysis indicated that there was little genetic variability among the isolates. A dendrogram based on Jaccard's coefficient separated the isolates into 4 clusters with 12% dissimilarity. Shoemaker) isolates were evaluated on the resistance of 123 winter wheat advanced breeding lines developed from European winter wheat as well as on 3 control cultivars, BR8, BH1146, and Zentos. In order to determine the overall degree of polymorphism and detect similarities among genotypes, 19 almond [Prunus dulcis (Mill.) D.A.Webb] genotypes were studied. Variation in traits related to phenology, morphology, and fruit quality was observed, and the results indicated a high morphological diversity of almond genotypes. The effect of wetted soil area on trunk growth, yield, and fruit quality in drip-irrigated Kütahya sour cherry (Prunus cerasus L.) trees grafted on mahaleb (Prunus mahaleb L.) seedlings was investigated over 3 seasons in a semiarid zone of Central Anatolia, Turkey. Percentages of wetted soil area ranging from 8.8% to 35.6% were obtained by applying 7 treatments consisting of 1 or 2 lateral drip lines per tree row and various dripper numbers per tree. Power delivery efficiency shows how much engine power is used for a tractor drawbar. Eccentric traction is a factor influencing the power delivery efficiency of a wheeled tractor. It occurs as a consequence of the offset position of a tractor implement, that is, when the traction line of the tractor and resistance line of the implement are parallel and do not coincide. The root distribution pattern of 3 grape rootstocks, Dog Ridge, Salt Creek, and St. George, grafted with Thompson Seedless grapevine was studied at the National Research Centre for Grapes in Pune, India. The soil is heavy black cotton soil (vertisol) with a pH of >8.0. Roots of different thicknesses (10 mm) were examined at horizontal distances of 0-30 cm, 31-60 cm, 61-90 cm, 91-120 cm, and 121-150 cm away from the trunk and also to depths of 0-30 cm, 31-60 cm, and 61-90 cm from the surface. Two Japanese-type plum (Prunus salicina Lindell) cultivars, 'Autumn Giant' and 'Black Beauty', were harvested at commercial maturity stage and either packed in nonperforated modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) or treated with a 500 ppb dose of 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) alone or given a combination of 1-MCP and MAP. After these treatments, the plum samples were stored at 0 °C for 60 days. The effects of stock type on morphological and physiological characteristics were compared in 1 + 0 Crimean juniper (Juniperus excelsa Bieb.) seedlings. In October 2010, the morphological characteristics of both stock types were determined. The physiological condition of both stock types was evaluated by measuring water relation, root growth potential (RGP), and root electrolyte leakage (REL) parameters in seedlings at periodic intervals from October 2010 to April 2011. Essential oils extracted by hydrodistillation from the aerial parts of naturally growing and field grown plants of Salvia cryptantha Montbert & Aucher ex Benthan were analyzed by GC-MS. Furthermore, the chemical components of naturally growing and cultured plants in 2 consecutive years (2007-2008) were compared. The essential oils of plant materials investigated ranged from 1.20% up to 1.52%. Nine for naturally growing and 22 components for both 2007-08 field grown crops were characterized, representing 94.75%, 95.82%, and 93.35%, respectively. Valencene (31.80%), eucalyptol (23.61%), and \beta-pinene (15.63%) were recognized as major components.
