Interrow spacing of intercrop species directly affects yield and competition indices such as land equivalent ratio of intercropping. The objectives of this research were to analyze (i) the maize and soybean yields under different spatial arrangements in maize-soybean relay strip intercropping (MSR) and (ii) the interspecies competition to provide a basis for optimization of rowspacing in MSR. The field trial was conducted in 2011 and 2012 at the Research Farm of the Sichuan Agricultural University in Ya'an to determine the impacts of various interrow planting distances on yield and competition indices in cereal (maize crop)-legume (soybean crop) relay strip intercropping. …

Photoperiod And Temperature Sensitivity In Early Soybean Accessions From The Vir Collection In Leningrad Province Of The Russian Federation, Liubov Novikova, Irina Seferova, Inna Matvienko, Zoya Shchedrina, Margarita Vishnyakova

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

The photoperiod and temperature sensitivity of the onset of flowering in 106 soybean accessions from the VIR collection has been studied for 8 years in a vegetation experiment in the conditions of Leningrad Province at 59°N, the northernmost point of soybean evaluation in the world. The accessions were previously field-assessed for the ability to form fully developed seeds in this region. The experimental conditions were extreme for soybean in terms of both photoperiod and heat supply. The emergence to flowering period length (LEF) in the sample set was 7.9 days longer, and the sum of the temperatures required …

Determination Of Forage Quality By Near-Infrared Reflectance Spectroscopy In Soybean, Sovetgul Asekova, Sang-Ik Han, Hong-Jib Choi, Sang-Jo Park, Dong-Hyun Shin, Chan-Ho Kwon, J. Grover Shannon, Jeong Dong Lee

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Soybeans have been a favored livestock forage for centuries. However, only a few studies have been conducted to estimate the forage quality of soybean by near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS). In this study, 353 forage soybean samples were used to develop near-infrared reflectance (NIR) equations to estimate four forage quality parameters: crude protein (CP), crude fat (CF), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), and acid detergent fiber (ADF). Samples included 181 recombinant inbred lines derived from PI 483463 (G. Soja) × Hutcheson (G. Max), 104 cultivated soybeans (G. Max), and 68 wild soybeans (G. Soja). Two NIR equations developed for CP and CF …

A field trial with the application of 3 rates (0, 5, and 20 t ha^{-1}) of hydratized calcite (73% CaO + 2%-3% MgO + 21% H_2O) was set up in the spring of 2006. The experiment area had 3 plots of 630 m2. Each plot was divided into 4 subplots for replications. Over the next 2 years, the residual effects of liming on plant yield and nutrient uptake were investigated using maize hybrid OsSK499 in 2006 and 2007 and soybean variety Ika in 2008. The ear leaves of maize at flowering (mid-July 2006 and 2007) were analyzed for P, K, …

The following study was conducted in order to compare the modified single-seed descent method of selection used in soybean breeding at the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Novi Sad, Serbia, with the standard bulk method and the pedigree method. The source materials for the development of hybrid populations were 15 genotypes, and a total of 10 cross combinations were made. Comparison of the lines developed by the different breeding methods was done in the F6 generation. Genetic gain from selection was taken as the main indicator of efficiency of the tested methods. The modified single-seed descent method produced …

Developing successful strategies to ensure future increase in yield of soybean and peanut crops hinges in part, on improving the genetic basis of the cultivars. Knowledge of genetic relationships in crop breeding programs provides valuable information that can be used by plant breeders as a parental line selection tool. So far, a thorough analysis of genetic diversity among the soybean and peanut genotypes grown in Turkey had not been attempted at DNA level. In this study, inter-simple sequence repeats (ISSR) and sequence-related amplified polymorphism (SRAP) markers were used to evaluate the genetic diversity between 21 soybean and 32 peanut cultivars …

Compared to full season soybean cropping systems, seed yield reduction is a major concern in double-cropped soybean production systems. This study was conducted at the Research Farm of Mustafa Kemal University, Hatay, Turkey, to determine if it is possible to enhance the yield of both full season and double-cropped soybean by narrowing row spacing. Two soybean cultivars, A3935 and S4240, were planted using row widths of 30, 50, and 70 cm, and twin row (50 25 50 cm) in 2004 and 2005. Seed yield and the other investigated plant parameters of double-cropped soybean were lower compared to full season soybean. …
