Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
The genetic relationships among 48 melon (Cucumis melo L.) genotypes collected from various parts of Azerbaijan were determined by comparing their phenotypic and molecular traits. Eleven agromorphological traits and 10 polymorphic inter-simple sequence repeat (ISSR) primers were used to define the genetic diversity. Principal component analysis grouped the agromorphological traits into the first four axes, describing 78% of the total variations. The highest genetic variation coefficient was found for yield per hectare (20.32%) and for fruit length (17.35%). Calculated heritability for yield was 0.96. In this study the Fourier transform-near infrared (FT-NIR) spectroscopy technique was used to predict the fatty acid and sterol content of sesame. For this purpose, partial least square regression (PLS-R)-based prediction models were developed, which relate the FT-NIR spectra to reference GC measurements. In total, 39 sesame samples were collected from local producers around Muğla Province. Sesame oil was extracted from the seeds by using a screw press and extracted oil samples were analyzed without any refining. This study was carried out to determine the different irrigation regime effects on oxygen isotope discrimination of stem water (Os) and its relationship with grain yield (GY), aboveground biomass (BM), and stomatal conductivity (gs) of winter wheat. For this purpose a field experiment was conducted between 2009 and 2011 in a semiarid region of Turkey under rainfed (RF), deficit (DI), moderate (MI), and full irrigation (FI) conditions. Cocklebur (Xanthium strumarium L.) seed oil is available for biodiesel production as a wild plant species. In the present study, the cocklebur seeds collected from Muslubelen, Yozgat, Turkey, at 1440 m in 2014 were sown in the Bozok University Agriculture Faculty Topçu Research Area during 2015 and 2016. The maximum crude oil ratio was obtained as 35%. Oleic and linoleic acid contents of cocklebur seed oil were determined as 11.37% and 76.97%, respectively. In this experiment, 100 ppm gibberellic acid (GA3) was applied to Memecik olive trees in the middle of June in the `on' (bearing) year to research the effects on yield, reducing sugar amount, and endogenous hormones with the purpose of bearing fruit regularly. The yield was 19.33 kg/tree in control plants and 17.33 kg/tree in GA3-treated plants in the `on' year. The yield was 7.17 kg/tree in GA3-treated plants and 4.00 kg/tree in control plants in the 'off' year. Research was conducted in 2009-2015 on Valjevka plum trees (Prunus domestica L.) that were grafted onto Myrobalan seedlings (Prunus cerasifera Ehrh. var. divaricata Ledeb.). Trees were planted in the spring of 2008. From 2009 the following methods of soil cultivation under tree canopies were introduced: spraying with foliar herbicides; mulching with organic waste, i.e. straw with compost; mechanical soil cultivation with the use of rotary cultivators and hoe; weed mowing. Knowledge of genetic diversity could be beneficial by contributing important information in the selection of breeding material. The objective of this study was to explore the genetic diversity and relationship in the Turkish tobacco germplasm with the iPBSretrotransposons marker that emerged as a universal method. A total of 90 landraces and 6 commercial cultivars collected from different geographical regions of Turkey were used in this study. Eleven most polymorphic iPBS-retrotransposons primers yielded a total of 119 scorable bands and 98 of these bands were found to be polymorphic (82.35%), with an average of 8.91 polymorphic fragments for each primer. Terrestrial orchid species are natural sources of salep and a closely related group of plant species widely distributed throughout Turkey. The phylogenetic relationship among fourteen different tuber-producing orchid species was investigated after analyzing phenotypic and genetic variation within and among the natural population through fifteen morphometric traits and ten random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) primer combinations. Banded herbicide applications with hooded field sprayers (HFS) provide safer applications in many crops. The aim of this paper is to show the effectiveness and safeness of selective and nonselective herbicide applications in a conventional sunflower production system (CSPS) using a combined hooded field sprayer (CHFS). Glyphosate interrow and aclonifen or quizalofop-P-ethyl intrarow were applied in fields cropped with nonglyphosate-resistant sunflower varieties in Ankara, Tekirdağ, and Tokat Provinces of Turkey in 2015 and 2016. This study investigates the advantages of two fuzzy linear regression (FLR) models, namely the Tanaka and the Savic and Pedrycz models, over multiple linear regression (MLR) for lentil yield management. We used a fuzzy approach to model the yield of lentil genotypes in which the input is crisp and the output fuzzy. Boza is a popular cereal-based traditional beverage particularly consumed during winter months in Balkan countries and Turkic societies. The present study aims to investigate the influence of different cereal sources and starter cultures used in the commercial production of boza on its chemical and microbiota compositions and physicochemical characteristics. In this study, two standard strawberry cultivars, Rubygem and Sabrina, were treated with UV-C (254 nm), hot water (60° C for 10 s), and UV-C + hot water after harvesting and stored in modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) at 0 °C and 5 °C. Effects of drought stress on growth, predawn xylem water potential (ψpd), osmotic solutes (soluble sugar and proline), and stomatal conductance were assessed in two oak (Quercus cerris L. and Quercus robur L.) seedlings. Seedlings of both species were subjected to three drought treatments with the following irrigation intervals: well-watered (control: irrigation every 2-3 days), moderate drought stress (irrigation every 15 days), and severe drought stress (irrigation every 30 days). Drought-stressed seedlings of Q. cerris and Q. robur had more negative predawn xylem water potential than their well-watered seedlings. The effect of altitude, shooting period, and tea grade on the catechins and caffeine contents of Turkish black tea was investigated. The experimental factors significantly affected all of the parameters analyzed. Epigallocatechin gallate was the major catechin of black tea (0.719-1.007 g 100 g-1 dm) followed by epigallocatechin (0.627-0.791 g 100 g-1 dm). Additionally, caffeine (1.810-2.175 g 100 g-1 dm), theaflavin (3.201-6.000 μmol g-1), and thearubigin (8.577-12.635 g 100 g-1 dm) contents were determined. The present paper reports the contents of individual lipophilic antioxidants in fourteen species of edible common agricultural weeds, typical of agricultural areas such as fields and orchards. Young edible green aboveground parts of weeds were analyzed for their chlorophyll, carotenoid, and tocopherol qualitative profiles and contents. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on the complete lipophilic antioxidant composition of the edible weeds examined in this study. The efficacy and behavior effects of long-lasting insecticide-incorporated screens (LLIS; polyolefin containing deltamethrin) were tested under laboratory conditions against two important pests (Leptinotarsa decemlineata and Conotrachelus nenuphar). Four Vestergaard ZeroFly® LLISs of different specifications were evaluated: trial batches JLCB061009, SPSA 6616, ZeroFly Greenhouse (B), and ZeroFly Greenhouse (G). Two control products were also included: ZeroFly Screen Greenhouse White with no insecticide and a standard commercial fiberglass insect screen. For this purpose, 71 populations from 5 naturally growing Carthamus species were collected from Turkey: Carthamus dentatus (30 accessions), Carthamus lanatus (30 accessions), Carthamus persicus (2 accessions), Carthamus glaucus (6 accessions), and Carthamus tenuis (3 accessions). The content of selected compounds was compared among different spear sections (the tip, the middle, and the base) of green (Ariane F1, Dariana F1, Darsiane F1, Mondeo F1, Primaverde F1, and Viridis F1) and purple (Burgundine F1 and Pacific Purple F1) asparagus cultivars. Sugars, organic acids, anthocyanins, flavonols, flavones, and hydroxycinnamic acids were determined by HPLC. No significant differences in the content of organic acids, sugars, and hydroxycinnamic acids were detected among cultivars. However, purple cultivars contained the highest levels of anthocyanins. The effects of various concentrations of 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) on `Ankara? pears (Pyrus communis L.) were investigated. The pears were harvested at commercial maturity level and 1-MCP (250 and 500 ppb) was applied to the fruit for 24 h at 5 °C. After 1-MCP treatments, the pears were kept at 0 °C temperature with 90%-92% relative humidity (RH) for 8 months. Pruning has been seen as a means of improving olive tree productivity. The presumed importance of pruning was described by Columella (born 4 AD), and has persisted in general terms to the present. In this work, the effect of different pruning regimes was assessed from two field trials conducted in Mirandela, NE Portugal, in an olive grove of cv. 'Cobrançosa', rainfed managed. The maturity date (MD) of Prunus stone fruit has been long known to be a quantitatively inherited trait. A NAC-type gene indicated as PpNAC1 (ppa008301m) has been found recently to be a strong candidate of a major gene influencing MD in peach. A 9-bp insertion in this gene resulted in earlier MD in two segregating peach populations. The effects of genotype and altitude of the growing location on physical, chemical, and phytochemical properties of strawberry fruits were investigated. Eight strawberry genotypes obtained from diverse breeding programs were selected. The genotypes were grown at three altitudes: in Antakya (117 m), Urumu (443 m), and Saksak (755 m). The results indicated that genotype and growing location had a significant impact on both physico-chemical and phytochemical characteristics. Genotypes explained 36%?51% of total variance for fruit weight (FW), total soluble solids (TSS), total acidity (TA), color incidence chroma (C), hue (h°), citric acid, and total monomeric anthocyanin (TMA).
