Hacıhaliloğlu is one of the most widely cultivated apricot (Prunus armeniaca L.) cultivars in Turkey. It produces fruit of excellent quality and is consumed both fresh and dried. In this study several factors affecting in vitro culture, rapid proliferation, rooting, and acclimatization of the apricot cultivar Hacıhaliloğlu were examined. During this study significant differences in harvesting dates were observed, with the month of May being noted as the best time to examine the in vitro culture of Hacıhaliloğlu. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of soil fumigant alternatives to methyl bromide (MeBr) on the weeds, damping-off, and seedling growth of tobacco. Methyl bromide (90 g m^{-2}), dazomet (D) (50 g m^{-2}), and metam sodium (MS) (100 mL m^{-2}) were evaluated in 2 locations in the Karacasu district of Aydın province, Turkey, February-April 2005. In addition, half doses of D and MS were investigated in 2006. MeBr treatment had 52.5% control against the postemergence damping-off caused by Pythium spp., while alternative treatments had no effect on the disease in 2005. Utilization Of Boron Compounds As Synergists With Ammonium Polyphosphate For Flame Retardant Wood-Polymer Composites, Ramazan Kurt, Fati̇h Mengeloğlu

The investigation consisted of utilizing boron compounds (BCs) as a synergist with ammonium polyphosphate (APP) in manufacturing flame retardant wood-polymer composites (WPCs). Flame retardants (FRs) at various ratios (APP, boric acid (BA), borax (BX), zinc borate and BA/BX mixtures) were used to determine the physical, mechanical, and burning rate properties of WPCs manufactured from wood flour, polypropylene, and maleic anhydride polypropylene. The results showed that the addition of FRs reduced all mechanical properties of WPCs except for impact strength. However, this reduction was lower for samples having BCs in FRs formulation. This study investigated the wood quality of 8-year-old Melia azedarach trees grown in Saudi Arabia. The wood quality of the trees was studied in terms of fibre length, specific gravity, and heartwood/sapwood area. The sampled trees were felled, their stem height and diameter were measured, and discs were cut from the stem base and breast height of each tree. Fibre length and specific gravity at breast height were determined, as well as the area and proportion of heartwood and sapwood at both base- and breast-height cross sections. Dormancy in Cercis siliquastrum seeds is due to the hard, impermeable seed coat and inhibition by endosperm. The effects of acid scarification, cold moist stratification, and the combination of both on breaking dormancy and enhancing seed germination were evaluated. Seeds were scarified with concentrated (95%-97%) sulfuric acid for various times (0, 20, 40, and 60 min), followed by cold moist stratification for 0, 1, 2, 3, or 4 months. The aim of this study was (i) to evaluate the impact of water deficit and rehydration on nitrogen compounds and abscisic acid of Vigna unguiculata leaves, and (ii) to investigate the hypothesis that abscisic acid influences proline. Bioconversion of cellulosic components into fermentable sugars has currently been accomplished with the help of the microbial enzyme, cellulase. In this study, Pleurotus ostreatus (Jacquin ex Fr.) Kummer and Pleurotus sajor-caju (Fr.) Singer were tested for cellulase production by solid state fermentation (SSF) using saw dust, sugarcane bagasse, and paddy straw as substrate. To enhance production, the substrates were pretreated with 1% and 4% NaOH solutions. Poor crop stand and high weed infestation are the major constraints of direct seeded rice. Seed priming has the potential to improve the seedling emergence and crop stand. This study was conducted to evaluate the on-farm assessment of direct seeded rice by employing different priming techniques such as on-farm priming, hydropriming, hardening, and osmohardening with CaCl_2 and KCl. Untreated seeds were taken as control. A period of stagnation in silver fir development has been recorded in all felled trees in selection forests of Serbia (233 trees on Mt. Goc and 451 trees on Mt. Tara). In the selection forests on Mt. Goc, the stagnation stage ranges between 40 and 330 years, but on Mt. Tara, it ranges from 15 to 185 years. Na^+/H^+ antiporters have been suggested to play important roles in salt tolerance in plants. English cordgrass (Spartina anglica) is a gramineous halophyte with very strong salt tolerance. It possesses salt glands in its stems and leaves, through which excess salt can be excreted. In this study, a vacuolar Na^+/H^+ antiporter homologous gene (temporarily named SaNHX1) was isolated from Spartina anglica by RT-PCR and rapid amplification of cDNA ends (RACE). A field experiment was conducted for 2 consecutive years to evaluate the response of cotton crop to deficit irrigation under drip irrigation conditions. Water use efficiency (WUE), seed cotton yield, and fiber quality parameters were assessed at various irrigation levels. The experiment was set up to apply water at 4 different application rates: 50%, 65%, 80%, and 100% of the soil water depletion. These were abbreviated as DI50, DI65, DI80, and FI, respectively. The effects of various NPK levels on growth, flowering, and xanthophyll contents of African marigold (Tagetes erecta, 'Double Eagle') and French marigold (Tagetes patula, 'Yellow') were investigated. Plant height, number of branches plant^{-1}, leaf area (cm^2), total chlorophyll contents (mg g^{-1}), number of flowers plant^{-1}, flower diameter, flower quality, fresh and dry weight of a flower, total flower weight plant^{-1}, blooming period, and days to flowering were maximum with 15:10:10 g m^{-2} NPK application. In order to describe changes in water regime and production parameters caused by red polyethylene (PE) mulch in dehydrated watermelon (Citrullus lanatus (Thunb.) Matsum. & Nakai) plants, as well as to define their transpiration efficiency (TE) and water use efficiency (WUE) under different temperature environments, 2 individual pot experiments (summer external experiment and autumnal greenhouse experiment) were conducted. Nigella sativa L. has industrial, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical uses but has not been adequately characterized in Pakistan. This investigation was carried out to explore genotype specific fingerprinting of 32 N. sativa L. genotypes based on randomly amplified polymorphic DNA markers. From 58 random primers used, 15 primers generated 249 reproducible and scorable amplification products across all the genotypes, out of which 164 (66%) fragments were polymorphic revealing a high level of polymorphism among these genotypes. Antioxidant Properties Of Methanolic Extract From Inula Graveolens L., Adnan J. M. Al-Fartosy

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

The aim of this study was to assess the possible antioxidant activities of 80% methanolic extract from the Inula graveolens L. plant. It was found that the methanolic extract has the highest content of phenolic (1.63%, calculated as gallic acid) and flavonoid (0.52%, calculated as quercetin) equivalents per 100 g of dry mass. The methanolic extract possesses strong antioxidant activity (64.28%) as well as strong reducing power (increasing as the extract concentration increases) and ferrous ion chelating (96%) abilities. Moreover, the methanolic extract shows the highest free radical-scavenging activities for superoxide anion and hydroxyl radical, reaching 93.43% and 91.38%, respectively.

The aim of this study is to investigate in-vitro antimicrobial effects of the essential oils from oregano (Origanum acutidens and Origanum rotundifolium) and thyme (Thymus sipyleus subsp. sipyleus var. rosulans). The chemical composition and antimicrobial attributes of the essential oils obtained from the aerial parts of the plants, of which there were 3 Lamiaceae species, have been studied. The production of grapes for early table consumption is becoming more popular in the Mediterranean region of Turkey. In this study, the cultivation of 5 early table grape cultivars ('Ergin çekirdeksizi', 'Uslu', 'Yalova incisi', 'Cardinal', and 'Perlette') in the open field and under protected cultivation were compared in 2004-2005 and 2005-2006 seasons. The aim of this research was to evaluate the color, firmness, and total phenolic (TP) content in tomatoes according to cultivar and growing conditions. Cultivars with oval, elongated, round, and cherry-shaped fruits of determinate tomato were grown in Mediterranean (Dragonja Valley) and continental regions. Experiments in the continental region were conducted outdoors (Ljubljana-field) and under a low tunnel (Ljubljana-tunnel). The present study was undertaken to contribute to the continuous search for efficient in vitro protocols for the micropropagation of olive trees, with special focus on the Oueslati cultivar. It investigates the main factors involved in the micropropagation process, namely medium composition, growth regulators, rooting, and acclimatization conditions. It demonstrates that under particular conditions, the Oueslati cultivar displays a high capacity to proliferate.
