In recent years, orchard and vineyard tractors have become widespread in Turkey. Owing to their narrow-track width and work environment, these tractors overturn easily. Therefore, tractor manufacturers have to fabricate roll-over protective structures (ROPS) that are high enough to prevent continuous rolling. In this study, an innovative system that increases the safety of the driver and decreases the ROPS height was tested on 20 tractors that are currently available for retail sale in Turkey. Tillage is an operation to improve soil conditions for optimal crop emergence and yield. Different tillage implements and operational variables may affect soil physical properties. Compared to full season soybean cropping systems, seed yield reduction is a major concern in double-cropped soybean production systems. This study was conducted at the Research Farm of Mustafa Kemal University, Hatay, Turkey, to determine if it is possible to enhance the yield of both full season and double-cropped soybean by narrowing row spacing. The efficacy of soil solarization, Dazomet, chicken manure (CM), olive processing waste (OPW), and soil solarization in combination with CM or OPW or half doses of Dazomet against Meloidogyne incognita on tomato cultivars was investigated in greenhouses in western Anatolia, Turkey, between 2002 and 2004. The maximum soil temperature average was increased 47.1 °C by soil solarization alone at the 15 cm soil depth of soil in the first year. This study was carried out to estimate the broad-sense heritability for seed yield and some yield components of 15 grass pea (Lathyrus sativus L.) genotypes in 2000-2002 at Bursa, in the Marmara region of Turkey. The experimental design was a randomized complete block design with 3 replications. The heritabilities for seed yield, plant height, pod number, seed number per pod, seed number per plant, 1000-seed weight, biologic yield, and harvest index were estimated as 30%, 42%, 61%, 19%, 56%, 75%, 82%, and 49%, respectively. This study was conducted with barley in greenhouse conditions in order to investigate seed inoculation with 5 different N_2-fixing (Bacillus licheniformis RC02, Rhodobacter capsulatus RC04, Paenibacillus polymyxa RC05, Pseudomonas putida RC06, and Bacillus OSU-142) and 2 different phosphate-solubilising (Bacillus megaterium RC01 and Bacillus M-13) bacteria in comparison to control and mineral fertiliser (N and P) application. The ultimate bending moment carrying capacity of metal-plate-connected (MPC) wood-truss-splice joints constructed with red pine (Pinus brutia Ten.) lumber was investigated. Lumber 38 mm by 90 mm and 3 different sizes of metal plate connectors were utilized in constructing the joints. A 4-point loading method was used to determine the joints' bending moment capacity. Depth Of Dormancy And Desiccation Tolerance In Acer Trautvetteri Medv. Seeds, Mustafa Yilmaz

This first exploratory study on the seed physiology of Acer trautvetteri, a broadleaved tree found in Caucasia and northern Turkey, demonstrated that A. trautvetteri seeds exhibit physiological dormancy and require about 3 months of chilling for complete dormancy loss. Germination percentages significantly increased with the chilling duration and were 38.67%, 76.00%, and 96.00% after 1, 2, and 3 months of chilling, respectively. Moreover, while the seeds can be safely dried to at least 10% moisture content, reducing the moisture content to 3% killed all the seeds. The aim of this research was to determine water conveyance loss in the open canal irrigation network that serves the irrigation areas on the right and left banks of the Menemen Plain, in the lower part of the Gediz Basin. The research was carried out in the main, secondary, and tertiary canals. Water conveyance loss in the canals was measured by the inflow-outflow method, while water velocity was determined using a current-meter. Sodium chloride (NaCl) treatments were conducted on strawberry plants (Fragaria x ananassa cvs. Camarosa and Chandler) grown under greenhouse conditions. Modified Hoagland solution (one-third strength) containing 0 (control), 8.5, 17.0 and 34.0 mM NaCl was applied to the plants for 6 months. High NaCl concentrations caused serious reductions in growth parameters such as fresh weight (FW) of leaves, stems and roots, leaf area and the number of leaves. Addition of salt to the growth medium caused a reduction in stomatal conductance (Gs) and transpiration rate (E) of Camarosa. Saline water up to 34 mM NaCl did not have any influence …

Efficient plant regeneration via organogenesis was established for 2 summer squash (Cucurbita pepo L.) cultivars, viz. Bulum and Rumbo, using hypocotyl and cotyledon derived calli. Seeds were surface sterilized in 0.1% HgCl_2 for 5 min, and germinated in vitro in plant growth regulator free MS media. The maximum morphogenic callus induction rate (86%) was observed from a hypocotyl explant by culturing in MS medium supplemented with 2.5 mg l^{-1} 2,4-D. The predictive power of a hyperspectral imagery for estimating woody and herbaceous biomass were examined for a big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata) dominated area in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, United States of America. The normalized difference vegetation (NDV) and structure insensitive pigment (SIP) indices were used to investigate the relationships between biomass components and reflectance spectra. Ground data were collected in 13 sample plots 1 m^2 in size by clipping all herbaceous vegetation to ground level and stripping green leaves from big sagebrush plants. The study was carried out to determine the adaptation potential of sweet potato crops to different regions of Turkey. The study included 9 introduced genotypes of diverse origin and 2 local genotypes that were tested in 4 locations (Diyarbakır and Şanlıurfa representing the southeastern Anatolia region, and Adana and Hatay representing the Mediterranean region) in 2000 and 2001. Determining The Relationships Between Yield And Yield Attributes In Sunflower, Yalçin Kaya, Göksel Evci̇, Sezgi̇n Durak, Veli̇ Pekcan, Tahi̇r Gücer

Relationships between seed yield and agronomic characters in sunflower were investigated without considering genetic effects. Sunflower hybrids were evaluated in 3 categories: constant hybrids, control hybrids (mostly the same in each year), and test hybrids (changing each year). Seed yield was positively correlated with oil content, plant height, and 1000-seed weight, but flowering and physiological maturity period correlated negatively with yield based on the analyses in this research. A diverse relationship was determined between the seed yield of the hybrids and oil content. The aim of this investigation was to identify suitable parental lines of vetch (Vicia sativa spp.) from Turkish and ICARDA germplasm, with appropriate morphological and phenological characters, for generating low %w w^{-1} \gamma-L-Glutamyl-\beta-cyano-L-alanine toxin cultivars, using infrared nitrile screening, dendrogram clustering, and Pearson correlations. A significant inverse relationship between seed-mass and %w w^{-1} \gamma-L-Glutamyl-\beta-cyano-L-alanine was observed in 13 semiprostrate lines of V. sativa. No corresponding seed-toxin, seed-mass relationship was observable in 41 lines of V. sativa subsp. sativa of erect habit. This study was carried out in order to determine the grain vitreousness percentage and stability performance of 44 durum wheat genotypes, which were tested in 3 different environments during 2 growing periods. Grain vitreousness percentage of the genotypes ranged between 69.2% and 90.0%. Svevo, Amanos 97, and Zenit varieties had the highest vitreousness kernel percentages and the lowest grain yields. The negative correlation coefficient between vitreous grain percentage and grain yield, according to correlation analysis, confirms this result. The objectives of this study were to determine the changes to some agronomic properties that significantly affect seed yield, and to conserve landraces of the common bean of Artvin province, especially in areas that will be flooded by dam projects, by collecting them before they are lost. Synergistic Effects Of The Inoculation With Plant Growth-Promoting Rhizobacteria And An Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungus On The Performance Of Wheat, Mohammad Saghir Khan, Almas Zaidi

The synergistic effects of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria and an arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungus (Glomus fasciculatum) on plant growth, yield, and nutrient uptake of wheat plants were determined in field conditions. The triple inoculation of Azotobacter chroococcum with Bacillus and Glomus fasciculatum significantly increased the dry matter by 2.6-fold above the control. Grain yield of plants inoculated with A. chroococcum together with Bacillus sp. and G. fasciculatum was 2-fold higher than that of non-inoculated plants, at 135 days after sowing (DAS). The rootstock potential of Turkish Lagenaria siceraria germplasm for watermelon was evaluated. Among 210 accessions, 72 genotypes were selected based on morphological characteristics. Two commercial hybrid rootstocks were also used for comparison. Crimson Tide watermelon cultivar was used as a scion. Emergence rate, hypocotyl morphology, survival rate, and resistance to Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. niveum (FON) were investigated. Grafted plants were grown for 3 weeks in order to investigate the effect of rootstocks on plant growth. Leaf number, shoot dry weight, and root dry weight were determined. The distribution of mating types of Ascochyta rabiei (teleomorph: Didymella rabiei) was studied on isolates collected from chickpea growing areas of Central Anatolia. Mating type assessments of 45 isolates from 6 different provinces were conducted under laboratory conditions. After keeping for 5-6 weeks, the pseudothecial development and ascospore production were observed on chickpea stem pieces that were incubated in 8 ± 1 °C and 85% relative humidity. Bursaphelenchus mucronatus, a species closely related to the pinewood nematode (Bursaphelenchus xylophilus, a quarantine pest), was isolated from several wilted pine trees in different provinces of Turkey. To understand the role of B. mucronatus in these wilting cases, the pathogenicity of B. mucronatus on 3-year-old seedlings of the 3 pine species most widespread in Turkey was investigated under greenhouse conditions. In 4 European chestnut (Castanea sativa Mill.) cultivars ('Hacıibiş', 'Karamehmet', 'Osmanoğlu' and 'Sarıaşlama'), somatic embryogenesis from immature cotyledons of open-pollinated seeds collected 5, 6, 7, and 8 weeks after anthesis and cultured on Driver and Kuniyuki walnut (DKW) medium was determined in this study. The percentage of embryogenic cotyledons and the number of embryos per embryogenic cotyledon were recorded at the end of the second subculture. Impact Of Alkaline Dust Pollution On Soil Microbial Biomass Carbon, Ömer Kara, İlyas Bolat

The effect of alkaline dust pollution emitted from Bartın cement plant on the soil microbial biomass carbon was investigated using the chloroform fumigation-extraction (CFE) method. Microbial biomass C (C_{mic}) values ranged from 157.82 to 1201.51 µg g^{-1} soils in the polluted area and from 726.70 to 1529.14 µg g^{-1} soils in the control area. Soils polluted with alkaline cement dust resulted in significant reductions in C_{mic} levels compared to control soils. Microbial biomass C correlated negatively with CaCO_3 content (r = -0.52, P < 0.05) and positively with soil organic C (r = 0.67, P < 0.01). C_{mic}:C_{org} ratio proved to be a reliable soil microbial parameter for describing the change in the man-made ecosystem. Mean C_{mic}:C_{org} ratio was 2.55 and 3.09 in the polluted soils and control soils, respectively. The decrease in this ratio was an indication of soil degradation in the polluted soils. A significant decline in the C_{mic}:C_{org} ratio in cement dust-polluted soils also indicated that this parameter can serve as a good indicator of soil health.
