In contrast to traditional data collection methods that require manual sampling, vegetative index (VI) maps derived from unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) imagery are a potential tool to characterize temporal and spatial treatment effects in a more efficient and non-destructive way. Remotely-sensed reflectance data from a growing corn crop contains pixel values associated with the above-ground plant tissue (e.g., leaves, stalks, tassels) and the underlying soil features. Background soil reflectance data potentially reduces the effectiveness of VI for characterizing crop responses to experimental treatments. Removing background soil image pixels from the larger image dataset should improve that effectiveness. The objective of …

Research has indicated that the use of animal manure as fertilizer is a significant point source of pollution to the environment. Heavy metals can be found in and from items such as cigarettes, construction sites, mining areas, and some over-the-counter medications. The use of these items can cause serious health effects on humans and the environment. Through surface runoff, the heavy metals are transported to the wetlands causing pollution. The sensitivity of enzymes to the environmental pollution, the ease of assay, and their role in soil biological functions makes them useful tool as indicator of soil quality. The objectives of …

Cover Crops As Tools: How Soil Fungal Communities Can Be Prepared For Successful Prairie Restoration, Andrew Allee, Blake Branch
Show Your Stripes Research and Creative Showcase
Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) have major impact on plant survival, growth and plant community structure. Current land management practices utilize tilled corn-soybean rotations prior to restoration to control exotic weeds. Here, we investigate whether incorporating no-till practices and different cover crop combinations prior to prairie planting provide a more robust prairie restoration. Measuring fungal community changes occurring in old and conventional fields in comparison to a remnant prairie, we found that community composition of all fields was distinct. AMF richness differed among fields, but diversity did not. We will continue to monitor fungal community composition annually, measuring how cover crop …

Sustainability Of Organic Soil Amendments On Soil Fertility And Earthworms, Mackenzie Hoffman
Scholars Week
One of the growing concerns of farmers is soil fertility which is defined as the ability of soil to grow and support plant life by minerals and nutrients needed for the plants. Healthy soil leads to better yields which lead to more food produced. Traditionally, soil fertility has been maintained with the use of chemical fertilizers. This research looked at an alternative method of increasing soil fertility: the addition of a soil amendment. Chemical fertilizers can lead to an oversupply of nitrogen which can make the plants more susceptible to diseases and pests and can also reduce the colonization of …

The ability to harvest moist forage as hay gives Kentucky producers many advantages, including timely harvest, higher forage quality, and less weathering loss over hay systems. The baleage system allows producers to utilize commonly available forage equipment (mowers, rakes, balers) rather than requiring choppers and silo structures or bags. Making high quality baleage requires timely access to bale wrappers.
