The decline in honey bee populations over the past two decades in the United States is alarming. The management provided by beekeepers to their honey bee colonies influences the survival of the colony. However, there is a lack of information on the experiences of beekeepers, specifically women beekeepers. The Center for Rural Affairs (CFRA) in Nebraska hosted the “Honey Bees on the Farm: Connecting Women Beekeepers and Women Farmers for Environmental and Economic Benefit” program that provided informal, educational events to women beekeepers and landowners. The 2014 Farm Bill presented agricultural producers with new options in farm risk management that was very different than previous years. This publication documents the evaluation and analysis conducted through a Nebraska Extension and Farm Service Agency educational effort reaching 13,328 producers, in 112 workshop meetings across the State of Nebraska. The evaluative effort included a post-workshop survey instrument and a six-month post event survey tool, showing the demographic breakdown of the workshop clientele, short- and medium-term knowledge/behavioral impacts, and the financial value of the program overall.

Sorghum is grown throughout Nebraska on approximately 0.6 million acres of land. It is grown as a forage crop as well as a grain crop. There is no significant commercial seed production in Nebraska. Grain sorghum is used domestically as livestock feed, in ethanol production, and to a limited extent as a food crop.

Grain sorghum is also exported to several countries. All sorghum hybrids (grain and forage) are susceptible to ergot disease. Ergot is a disease that impacts sorghum production directly by infecting unfertilized flowers and preventing seed development. Ergot also impacts sorghum production indirectly.
