Planetor: Review And Application, John Cole, Burton Pflueger

Economics Staff Paper Series

Farmers are becoming increasingly aware of the environmental consequences of farming practices that have become "conventional" over the last 30 to 40 years. As agricultural producers, they are expressing concern about erosion, ground water contamination, and personal health considerations from chemical use. At the same time, farmers are concerned about the economic viability of their operations. Farmers cannot afford to sacrifice net farm incomes in order to meet stricter environmental regulations. A new software package named Planetor has been developed that can be used to examine the interrelationship between economic sustainability and environmental safety. Researchers working on the Big Sioux …

Urbanization And Food Imports In Sub-Saharan Africa, James Tabi, Wayne H. Howard, Truman Phillips Dec 1991

Urbanization And Food Imports In Sub-Saharan Africa, James Tabi, Wayne H. Howard, Truman Phillips

Agribusiness

The Granger statistical test of causality was used to examine the relationship between total food imports and urbanization and between food aid and urbanization. Urbanization appears to have caused total food imports to increase in 13 of the 24 countries. Food imports appear to be a cause of urbanization in three countries. Food aid, however, apparently was a cause of urbanization in 16 of the 24 countries used in the analysis.

B835: Landfills And Municpal Solid Waste In Maine, George K. Criner, John M. Halstead, Elizabeth Curtin, Steven C. Deller

Bulletins

Municipal leaders need current information about alternative disposal methods to make rational decisions on handling their town's waste. To provide an overview of landfilling and other waste-handling methods used in the upper New England states, a group of university researchers from New Hampshire, Maine, and Vermont initiated a study of landfills and solid waste management practices. The study involved a comprehensive mail survey of municipalities in Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont. This report focuses upon and discusses the results of the landfill and solid waste management survey for Maine.

Bulletins

George Criner and Chet Rock of the University of Maine, and students from their Waste Management class analyzed household wastes from 33 residences in Orono. Monitoring And Controlling Mastitis On Ontario Dairy Farms, Wayne H. Howard, Ravinderpal Gill, Kenneth E. Leslie, Kerry Lissemore Jul 1991

Monitoring And Controlling Mastitis On Ontario Dairy Farms, Wayne H. Howard, Ravinderpal Gill, Kenneth E. Leslie, Kerry Lissemore

Agribusiness

The frequency of use and the marginal costs and marginal value products of mastitis control practices on somatic cell count (SCC) and milk yield are investigated. A survey of current management practices is combined with Dairy Herd Improvement production information to determine the relationships between milk yield, SCC, management practices, and production and producer characteristics under field conditions. The relationships are modeled and compared at the cow and herd level. A moment-generating approach is used in the herd model to determine which, if any, practices are risk reducing. The SCC for an individual cow is a better indicator of milk …

Nebraska Farm Real Estate Market Developments 1990-91, Bruce B. Johnson Jul 1991

Nebraska Farm Real Estate Market Developments 1990-91, Bruce B. Johnson

Nebraska Farm Real Estate Reports

Agricultural land values rose 4 percent during 1990, although the pattern varied widely across the state. The annual increase represented the fourth straight year of increase according to the University of Nebraska annual Farm Real Estate Market Survey series; yet the 1991 average value remained at about two-thirds of the peak value recorded 10 years earlier.

Largest percentage gains in value were reported in the Central Crop Reporting District where the all-land average rose 10 percent. In contrast, the Southeast District recorded a slight decline in the all-land average.

By type of land, grazing land values usually showed the largest …

Impacts Of Rising Energy Prices On The Attractiveness Of Sustainable Farming Systems, Thomas Dobbs, John Cole Jun 1991

Impacts Of Rising Energy Prices On The Attractiveness Of Sustainable Farming Systems, Thomas Dobbs, John Cole

Economics Staff Paper Series

After several years of relatively stable energy prices during the middle-and late-1980s, events of late-1990 in the Middle East reawakened concerns about rising energy prices. Between July 1990, prior to Iraq's August invasion of Kuwait, and October 1990, diesel fuel prices increased by 77 percent. Natural gas, a major factor of production in urea fertilizer, also experienced price increases last fall in the aftermath of Iraq's invasion. Urea prices were affected by these higher natural gas prices. Moreover, Iraq and Kuwait supplied 7 percent of the world's urea prior to last fall and also provided fuel oil for fertilizer plants …

The first conference was designed to provide women with the incentive to challenge the future of agriculture while the second conference was designed to help women learn how to balance their family life with the business of farming or ranching. The second "Women in Agriculture" (WIA) conference was held in Pierre, South Dakota in March, 1991. The overall goal of the conference was to provide women with an opportunity to …

Effects Of Including Alfalfa In Whole-Farm Plans: Comparison Of Conventional, Ridge Till, And Alternative Farming Systems, Clarence Mends, Thomas Dobbs

Economics Staff Paper Series

South Dakota State University (SDSU) has been conducting research trials since 1985 at its Northeast Research Station (near Watertown, S.D. ) to compare various conventional , reduced tillage , and low chemical input ("alternative") farming systems . In one set of comparisons, Conventional and Ridge Till systems consisting of rotated corn, soybeans , and spring wheat are compared with an Alternative (no purchased chemical input) system consisting of rotated oats , alfalfa , soybeans, and corn. The alfalfa is just harvested one year (the year after under seeding in oats) in this system . Economics results for the first 5 …

Family Farms: Farming Shaping Their Future, Larry Janssen Mar 1991

Family Farms: Farming Shaping Their Future, Larry Janssen

Economics Staff Paper Series

We are living in times of rapid change in agriculture and in rural America. Interstate highways, livestock confinement systems, pesticides, fourwheel drive tractors and personal computers are innovations that did not exist or were seldom seen 30 - 35 years ago. Rural America has changed a great deal from the time I was raised on a 320 acre Nebraska farm, driving 25 hp. Ford SN tractors, and going to a one-room country school! In times of rapid changes, many people are concerned about the future of agriculture and family farms. Today, I will share with you my perspectives on the …

Marketing Margins, Market Power, And Price Uncertainty, John Schroeter, Azzeddine Azzam Dec 1990

Marketing Margins, Market Power, And Price Uncertainty, John Schroeter, Azzeddine Azzam

Azzeddine Azzam

This paper provides a conceptual and empirical framework for analyzing marketing margins in a noncompetitive food-processing industry facing output price uncertainty. The framework allows for the decomposition of observed margins into components reflecting the marginal cost of the processing industry, oligopoly/oligopsony price distortions, and an output price risk component. The empirical procedure is applied to a time series of spreads between wholesale pork prices and farm prices of market hogs. The principal finding is that, while farm/wholesale margins are more consistent with competitive performance now than they were fifteen years ago, the output price risk component persisted throughout the sample …

Efficient Spatial Allocation Of Irrigation Water, Ujjayant N. Chakravorty, James Roumasset Dec 1990

Efficient Spatial Allocation Of Irrigation Water, Ujjayant N. Chakravorty, James Roumasset

Ujjayant Chakravorty

In the presence of conveyance losses, the efficient quantity of water applied falls with distance from the water source, but the amount of water "sent" (including conveyance losses) actually increases with distance from the source, except toward the tail end of the irrigation system. This implies that if marginal cost pricing were implemented, farmers at the middle and lower reaches of the system would have to pay more money for less water received. The model is illustrated and alternative financing schemes compared for an empirically derived demand function for irrigation water.
