In 2002, cash receipts from crop production in South Dakota totaled $1.76 billion, accounting for 38 % of all receipts of agricultural producers in the state (South Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service, 2003). The three most important crops grown in South Dakota are soybeans, corn, and wheat. In 2001, South Dakota ranked 8th in the production of corn and soybean and 9th in wheat production among the nation's crop producing states (South Dakota Agricultural Statistics Service, 2003). For the year ending February 1, 2003, Nebraska's agricultural land values showed a slight over-all increase of just over 1 percent; but with considerable variation across the State and by type of land. Based on UNL's 2003 Nebraska Farm Real Estate Market Survey, sub-state regional all-land changes ranged from a 6.6 percent decline in the Southwest to gains of 4.6 percent for the 12-month period in the Cental and East. The relative severity of the prolonged drought during 2002 appears to be a contributing factor to these regional value patterns. Federal government policies significantly affect the behavior of farmers in South Dakota, the North Central region, and the nation as a whole. In general, producers favor programs that provide income support and protect them from the full impact of free market adjustments. Farmers and ranchers in 27 states were surveyed during the spring of 200 l. The survey contains questions about farm income and risk management, conservation and environmental policies, trade, food labeling, the changing structure of agriculture, producer demographics, and a series of optional questions. This report summarizes the results of the 2002 Dairy Cost of Production survey implemented by The University of Maine and the Maine Milk Commission. Funding for this report was provided by the Maine Milk Commission. Analysis and discussion of the data in this report centers on four major groups called clusters. Cluster analysis attempts to identify groups of farms from within the sample of survey respondents that have relatively homogenous characteristics.

This study examines Tennessee and Pennsylvania consumers’ market participation for environmentally certified hardwood products (oak table, oak shelving board, oak chair), obtains potential premiums paid for selected hardwood products, determines the effects of scope of certification and demographics on premium amounts, and builds profiles of consumers who are willingness to pay the premium for certified hardwood products.

This paper investigated the impact that an expansion in agricultural processing would have on the Western Australian economy by developing and applying a Computable General Equilibrium economic model of Western Australia (called WAM). WAM was used to simulate the effects of a $1 million expansion in eight agricultural processing industries.

This study examines the perceptions of both consumers and producers towards farmers’ markets. Consumer perceptions are generalized from several previous studies conducted throughout the United States. Producer information was gathered through a survey of members of one farmers’ market in Arkansas. Previous studies, conducted in both rural and urban areas, indicate that the typical famers’ market customer is well educated and is of higher than average income. These consumers place great importance on quality of produce, knowledge that produce is grown locally, and the social interaction obtained through the farmers’ market experience. This thesis used a mail survey to collect data on homeowners' preferences and perceptions regarding termite prevention and control in four metropolitan areas of Louisiana (Monroe, Alexandria, Baton Rouge, and New Orleans). Respondents were asked to rank four different alternatives differing in cost, treatment choice, and number of inspections on termite control options. These ordered preference data were then analyzed using a contingent ranking method to determine the homeowner's choice for termite control. It was found that more than three-fourths (77%) of homeowners preferred to control termites and were willing to pay for it. In addition to contingent ranking, willingness …

Agriculture has been identified as one of the major sources of nonpoint water pollution due to discharges running off farmland. This study assessed the current adoption of Best Management Practices (BMPs) in the Louisiana sugarcane industry and provided policy recommendations based on the empirical results. Fifteen BMPs recommended by Louisiana State University Agricultural Center were examined in three categories: Soil Erosion and Sediment Control, Nutrient Management, and Pesticide Management.
