The Interplay Between Alternative And Modern Medicine In Western Society, Charlianne Johnson Jun 2024

The Interplay Between Alternative And Modern Medicine In Western Society, Charlianne Johnson

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

Despite the extraordinary successes of modern medicine, many people choose to practice methods of alternative medicine over those of modern medicine. In many cultures, alternative medicine is a revered tradition that has been practiced for thousands of years. A sizable sector of the Western population, however, is turning toward alternative medicine as a substitute for modern medicine. The goal of my project is to explore what alternative medicine is, who chooses to practice it and why, what about it causing resistance to modern medicine, why it is becoming increasingly popular in the West, and in what ways its popularity is …

Creating An Assistive Technology For Children Who Experience Seizures, Logan Osborne, Isabel Gliniecki Jun 2024

Creating An Assistive Technology For Children Who Experience Seizures, Logan Osborne, Isabel Gliniecki

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

This presentation will detail the process of creating an assistive technology for a child (age 6-12) who experiences seizures. This model is not intended to be given to children with seizures, but rather will be given to the Marcella Niehoff School of Nursing to teach students about accommodations. Our team communicated with our sponsor, brainstormed, created 3D models, and finally created a prototype of our model. We decided on a combination of a medicine compartment and a head rest that is easily transportable for a child. This model will help nursing students better understand and assist children who experience seizures.

Anxiety And Depressive Symptoms Prior To Menarche: The Role Of Sleep And Physical Activity, Katherine Jabaay Jun 2024

Anxiety And Depressive Symptoms Prior To Menarche: The Role Of Sleep And Physical Activity, Katherine Jabaay

Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium

Although research has shown that female adolescents experience increased anxiety and depression symptoms following menarche, there is limited evidence in the months leading up to menarche and even less attention paid to behavioral effects on this transition. This study examines pubertal status, anxiety symptoms, depressive symptoms, physical activity, and sleep health in 120 premenarchal, biological females. This study addresses: (1) the association between pubertal status, anxiety and depressive symptoms among female adolescents in the months leading up to menarche, and (2) considers the role of modifiable actions such as sleep health and physical activity on these symptoms.

Workplace Trauma In Professional Kitchens: Experiences Of Part-Time Undergraduate Culinary Arts Students In Ireland, Orla Mc Connell, Gillian Larkin May 2024

Workplace Trauma In Professional Kitchens: Experiences Of Part-Time Undergraduate Culinary Arts Students In Ireland, Orla Mc Connell, Gillian Larkin

Dublin Gastronomy Symposium

As the hospitality industry continues to struggle with attracting and retaining employees, chefs in particular, research on culture in kitchens continues to grow. A recent report in Ireland exposed a culture of bullying and harassment of employees in the hospitality sector. Internationally, researchers have explored the complexity of navigating, belonging, and coping in professional kitchens and have subsequently identified how trauma is embedded in the practice of cooking and serving food. The research to date has largely focused on the perspectives of cooks, and chefs, particularly those who work in elite restaurants, so little is known about the student experience. …

The Women Eat Last: Traditions, Table Manners, And Gender Narratives At The Romanian Dining Table, Alexandra Constantinescu May 2024

The Women Eat Last: Traditions, Table Manners, And Gender Narratives At The Romanian Dining Table, Alexandra Constantinescu

Dublin Gastronomy Symposium

Rooted in a rich history, with decades of oppressive politics and patriarchal displays of power, Romanian culture is shaped by complex narratives of resistance, endurance, adaptation, and transformation. Gender discourses in traditional Romanian culture portray women as the ideal frontline worker, heroic mother, outstanding housewife and an active member of the community. Expected to sacrifice personal aspirations and lifestyle for the well-being of others, they would almost exclusively be tasked with sourcing, preparing, and serving food for the family. They would be the last to sit at the family dining table - and the last to eat. In contrast, the …

Bittersweet Spirits: Transnational Food Memory And The Persistent Production Of Non-Mainstream Alcohol In Trinidad, Shrinagar Indra Francis May 2024

Bittersweet Spirits: Transnational Food Memory And The Persistent Production Of Non-Mainstream Alcohol In Trinidad, Shrinagar Indra Francis

Dublin Gastronomy Symposium

Whether we perceive the process of food leaving its mark on our culture as a function of genetic or collective memory, or a combination, informs the ways we interrogate the continued existence of these foods and their practices across time and landscapes. Within the postcolonial context, the process of re-embodiment is an inherently bittersweet one in that it comes as a consequence of loss and rupture and is motivated by a desire to be remade. Prior to colonialism, the production of alcohol was a profound aspect of the lives of the many peoples of West and West-Central Africa. Descendants of …

Trace, Trauma And Tradition In The Sopranos, Lisa Davies May 2024

Trace, Trauma And Tradition In The Sopranos, Lisa Davies

Dublin Gastronomy Symposium

This paper uses gastrocriticism – literary criticism that draws on disciplines such as sociology, anthropology and cultural studies – as a lens to establish the use of food as a symbolic marker of traces, trauma and traditions in the HBO series, The Sopranos. The Sopranos is a story of an Italian-American crime family in which food is uniquely central to the plot: a mob-boss is in therapy due to food-related panic attacks. Food is used in a variety of ways; as a narrative device; as a symbol of greed, power and status; and as a token of ethnic and …

Standardizing Clinical Ethics Consultation Documentation, Yoo Sun (Sunny) Jeong, Stephanie Kukora, Ásdís Finnsdóttir Wagner, Dawn Hood Patterson

Research Days

Background:

Clinical ethics consultations (CECs) require documentation. There is a paucity of literature and resources to guide clinical ethicists in documenting consults. High quality documentation encourages transparency between patients and clinicians, while keeping interdisciplinary team members knowledgeable about evolving care plans. However, there are discrepancies in the details captured in the CEC notes and accompanying recommendations.

Objectives/Goal:

To identify how CECs are documented in the medical record and assess whether there is consistent inclusion of relevant information.

Methods/Design:

Retrospective review of CECs conducted at a free-standing children’s hospital from January 2018- June 2023 was conducted. CECs were captured by cross-referencing …

Biomechanical Differences In Crawling Between Typically Developing Infants And Infants With Limb Loss, Feby Takawy, Larissa Brehm, Analise Oliver, Mark Geil

Symposium of Student Scholars

INTRODUCTION: In 2022, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention published updates to their checklists for the milestones children should achieve during typical development, and removed crawling entirely, citing a lack of normative data, inconsistent definitions, and variability timing of crawling onset (1,2). This project collected normative kinematic and spatiotemporal data on typically developing (TD) crawling infants and crawlers with limb loss (LL).

METHODS: Eleven TD infants were assessed every two weeks between onset of crawling and transition to walking. Six LL infants were assessed once without the use of a prosthesis. Infants crawled on a pressure-sensing mat that was …
