Bess Of Hardwick: Second Most Powerful Woman Of The Elizabethan Age And A Symbol Of Modern Thought, Hollie Mcdonald Dec 2012

Bess Of Hardwick: Second Most Powerful Woman Of The Elizabethan Age And A Symbol Of Modern Thought, Hollie Mcdonald

Grand Valley Journal of History

While not a very elegant representation of Bess of Hardwick, this quatrain nevertheless introduces a striking and unique character of an Elizabethan woman. Many studies on Elizabethan women focus on the subjugated place of females in that society. However, women, such as Bess of Hardwick, existed, and did not fit within these stereotypes, much like the poem by one of Bess’ contemporaries indicates. Often, since these women are minorities in sixteenth century England, they are overlooked entirely and not given proper credit for their accomplishments and services to crown and country. This is an ungracious disservice to the women who …

Dominican Resort Tourism, Sustainability, And Millennium Development Goals, Vinod Sasidharan, Marilyn E. Hall

Journal of Tourism Insights

The tourism industry continues to be touted as the main income and employment generator for Caribbean nations. In the Dominican Republic (DR), international tourism has become one of the largest industries and is a major contributor to the country’s economic growth. A recent trend in the DR is the development of luxurious residential resort complexes and private resort cities, mainly designed and created for foreign ownership. The Dominican government support for such projects has been very strong due to the economic propensity of these high-end resorts to assist the country in generating local opportunities for stable employment, creating basic infrastructure, …

Bias And Equivalence In Cross-Cultural Research, Jia He, Fons Van De Vijver

Online Readings in Psychology and Culture

Bias and equivalence are key concepts in the methodology of cross-cultural studies. Bias is a generic term for any challenge of the comparability of cross-cultural data; bias leads to invalid conclusions. The demonstration of equivalence (lack of bias) is a prerequisite for any cross-cultural comparison. we first describe considerations that are relevant when choosing instruments in a cross-cultural study, notably the question of whether an existing or new instrument is to be preferred. We then describe the definition, manifestation, and sources of three types of bias (construct, method, and item bias), and three levels of equivalence (construct, measurement unit, and full …

Developing Patient-Centered Care Evaluation In A Long-Term Geriatric Care Setting, Nathan Gras Jan 2012

Developing Patient-Centered Care Evaluation In A Long-Term Geriatric Care Setting, Nathan Gras

SPNHA Review

This paper proposes an evaluation model that assesses quality of care from a patient-centered care (PCC) perspective by incorporating the PCC concepts of empowerment, dignity, and respect, to determine whether the standard of care meets patient expectations and to gain a sense of quality of life measures from the perspective of the patient. It begins with a review of the core concepts of PCC and develops a general model of patient-centered care evaluation. A case study of a long-term care geriatric PACE organization is utilized as a means to illustrate an assessment of an organization's PCC evaluability and evaluation efforts. …

Evaluating The Kaiser Permanente Community Fund’S Social Determinants Of Health Portfolio, Sarah B. Paige, Emily Bourcier, Carol Cahill, Clarissa Hsu, Chris Kabel

The Foundation Review

· Research over the past two decades repeatedly demonstrates the relationship between poor health outcomes and socioeconomic factors such as poor housing, poverty, racism, and structural inequity.

· In 2005, the Northwest Health Foundation, supported by the Kaiser Permanente Community Fund, began an initiative to address these social determinants of health (SDOH).

· A variety of projects – short- and long-term, large and small – were supported over the five-year period for a total of $12.4 million. The mean project-implementation grant was $175,350 and 2½ years in length; capacity-building grants averaged $50,000 for 1½ years.

· In all, 323 social-determinant …

Building The Capacity Of California’S Safety Net: Lessons From The Strengthening Community Dental Practices Demonstration, Fontane Lo, Clare Nolan, Len Finocchio Jan 2012

Building The Capacity Of California’S Safety Net: Lessons From The Strengthening Community Dental Practices Demonstration, Fontane Lo, Clare Nolan, Len Finocchio

The Foundation Review

· Community dental practices provide “safety net” services to populations who would otherwise have limited access to care. The financial crisis of recent years has made it increasingly difficult for safetynet dental practices to serve people most in need while still balancing their books.

· The California HealthCare Foundation (CHCF) and the California Pipeline Program (CPP) funded a demonstration project to test the effectiveness of practice-management consulting as a strategy for helping California’s community clinics survive and thrive. This model emphasizes customized technical assistance to enhance the business infrastructure behind the delivery of care.

· The evaluation of this demonstration …

Using Community-Based Participatory Research To Investigate The Effectiveness Of Hiv/Aids Risk Reduction Counseling In An Urban African-American Community, Alicia Streater, Julie Gleason-Comstock, Cindy B. Calhoun, Barbara Jones, Silas Norman Jr. Jan 2012

Using Community-Based Participatory Research To Investigate The Effectiveness Of Hiv/Aids Risk Reduction Counseling In An Urban African-American Community, Alicia Streater, Julie Gleason-Comstock, Cindy B. Calhoun, Barbara Jones, Silas Norman Jr.

Michigan Journal of Public Health

Introduction: Risk reduction counseling is an important component in HIV/AIDS prevention. Community-based participatory research (CBPR) was conducted to determine if a single counseling session was as effective as a two-session intervention in reducing risk behavior. Methods: Community and academic investigators jointly developed the study design. A convenience sample of 242 persons was randomized to receive either a two session intervention with Conventional HIV Testing (CHT) or a one session intervention with HIV Rapid Testing (HRT). Participants completed a risk assessment immediately preceding the test and a risk reduction plan after the test; CHT participants received a second risk reduction session. …

Increasing Colorectal Cancer Screening Awareness: An Innovative Participatory Intervention, Delbert M. Raymond, Tsu-Yin Wu, Mary J. Richard, Mary J. Mcdonagh

Michigan Journal of Public Health

Among American men and women, colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer as well as the third leading cause of cancer death. The importance of CRC screening is supported by improved survival rates associated with early diagnosis. Despite these well known facts, half of eligible adults in the United States have not been tested. This paper reports on a novel intervention utilizing a uniquely designed community-based CRC education program to promote CRC awareness and increase participant’s intention to participate in CRC screening. Trained teams of oncology nurses worked with senior level nursing students who provided a two-tier …

Using Civic Engagement And Collaboration To Create Community Change: Lessons From Charlotte, N.C., Joanne G. Carman, Rebecca A. Hefner

The Foundation Review

· The city of Charlotte, N.C. undertook a deliberative democracy process using the AmericaSpeaks “21st Century Town Meeting” process.

· The University of North Carolina-Charlotte performed a retrospective, process evaluation of the initiative examining the initiative’s components, coverage, participant feedback, short-term outcomes, and lessons learned.

· Early planning and implementation was done by volunteers, which ultimately was not sustainable. A new center, housed within an existing organization, was created to implement the recommendations.

· The initiative achieved a number of early successes, such as increasing the number of school nurses, expansion of an early childhood development program and an increase …
