Due to the chronic effects and neurological basis of substance use disorder, medical and holistic interventions are needed to address the disorder. Individuals with substance use disorder feel an impact to their occupational functioning and overall engagement in daily activities and may lack the ability to participate in meaningful tasks without the use of substances. As the individual's substance of choice becomes their ‘primary occupation’, daily activities and routines can be removed or altered to make space for their chosen occupation. Homeless youth are an evasive population which can make it difficult to address matters such as problematic substance use. Along with being a hidden population, homelessness is already stigmatized, which can decrease the social support that these youths may receive. On the streets, homeless youth can fall into a culture where substance use and misuse are normalized. Background: Major depressive disorder or depression is a mental illness which affects people of a range of different ages. In terms of years lost due to disability, it is a leader. Physical activity is currently being used as a therapeutic treatment of depression that decreases levels of depression in individuals suffering from it. Physical activity can also be used as a form of prevention against depression. This study examines the association between vigorous physical activity and depression.

Do Child Physical Abuse And Adolescent Peer Relationships Influence Typologies Of Illegal And Substance-Use Behaviors During Emerging Adulthood?, Susan Snyder, Casey R. Monroe

This study uses latent class analysis (LCA) to explore patterns of illegal behaviors (e.g., property and violent offenses), and substance use (e.g., alcohol, tobacco, or other drugs) among emerging adults (18 to 27 years). Data include 12,677 respondents from Wave 3 of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health). Our study found that behaviors clustered into the following four classes: (a) the illegal and substance-use behaviors class (5.33%); (b) the fighting and substance-use class (5.24%); (c) the substance use class (28.30%); and (d) the normative class (61.12%).
