Compensation Theory: Can Club Soccer Players Appropriately Balance Energy Intake And Output In And Out Of Season?, Marco Ruggiero

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Obesity is a worldwide epidemic affecting both adults and children. Obesity and overweight prevalence is increasing, with a corresponding decline in physical fitness and general physical activity level (McHugh, 2010). The college setting presents an important opportunity for health promotion during a critical developmental stage for weight gain (Nelson et al., 2007). While exercising and a balanced diet are the basis of most obesity-prevention campaigns, little research has been done on how physical exercise may increase food consumption. The purpose of this study was to examine whether college club soccer players can appropriately balance energy intake and output in and …

The purpose of this study was to identify accommodations, modifications, and forms of assessments that inclusion teachers find useful in middle schools that made adequately yearly progress. The researcher conducted a quantitative study. This study was a descriptive study using survey data. A total of 78 inclusion teachers participated in the study. The data indicated that inclusion …

An Examination Of An Optimism Training Intervention On Optimism Levels Of Ncaa Division I Athletes: A Single Subject Design, Anya Marie Salzgeber May 2012

An Examination Of An Optimism Training Intervention On Optimism Levels Of Ncaa Division I Athletes: A Single Subject Design, Anya Marie Salzgeber

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Optimism has been shown to provide many benefits, such as better health, increased satisfaction, confidence, motivation, and higher athletic performance. Research has also suggested the ability to increase the frequency of experiencing those benefits through the use of certain cognitive behavior therapy techniques. While the research shows the ability to increase optimism in a random sample of individuals, there is a lack of research on increasing optimism in athletes. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of an optimism training intervention on state optimism levels of NCAA Division 1 athletes. It was hypothesized the intervention will …

Elementary Teacher Decisions And Effects Of Years Of Experience, Debra Deann Collins May 2012

Elementary Teacher Decisions And Effects Of Years Of Experience, Debra Deann Collins

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A wide range of decisions must be made in schools every day. Many of these decisions are made by administrators; however, teachers can and should be involved in decision-making at the school level. Teachers are professionals and should be provided the autonomy to make decisions that they believe are in the best interest of their students, schools, and profession. This research study surveyed certified elementary teachers to determine which types of decisions they desired to participate in making and to determine if years of teaching experience impacted teachers' willingness to participate in certain types of decisions. This study provides elementary …

Settling And Laying Down: A Cultural History Of Quakers In Savannah And Statesboro, Georgia, Jonathan Hoyt Harwell May 2012

Settling And Laying Down: A Cultural History Of Quakers In Savannah And Statesboro, Georgia, Jonathan Hoyt Harwell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This descriptive cultural history follows a hybrid methodology often applied to ethno-histories. This approach combines archival research, oral history, and ethnography, with reflexive aspects. I explore some similarities and differences between two Quaker meetings in Southeast Georgia, the small but growing urban meeting in Savannah and a discontinued rural one in the small college town of Statesboro (that sometimes met in the village of Guyton). These case studies of local and personal histories, combined with my observations as a participant in the life of the community, are designed to illuminate fine details of Quaker culture in the recent Deep South.

Using Archaeological Methods In Cemetery Surveys With Emphasis On The Application Of Lidar, Sarah L. Weitman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Cemeteries are important components of history. Surveying cemeteries is a good way to not only keep track of the information that cemeteries contain, but it also can provide a professional, systematic and standardized way of recording information and presenting it to the public. The preservation of cemeteries through recording information from the gravestones remains an important task that needs to be undertaken. Preservation, in this context, refers to having a comprehensive record of the gravestone data and maps of the gravestone locations to aid those who seek to garner information from the cemetery as well as preventing the loss of …

The Diver's Distance, Aristide Zezouma Sanou May 2012

The Diver's Distance, Aristide Zezouma Sanou

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The visual assessment of clustering tendency (VAT) method, which was developed by J. C. Bezdek, R. J. Hathaway and J. M. Huband uses a reordering of the rows and columns of a dissimilarity matrix; it then displays the ordered dissimilarity matrix (ODM) as a 2D gray-level image called an ordered dissimilarity image (ODI). Al- though successful in determining potential clustering structure of various data sets, the technique offers room for improvement. In this thesis, we propose a new proximity measure called the diver's distance which is defined based on concepts in graph theory. We then theoretically study the diver's distance …

Curriculum And The Life Erratic: The Geographic Cure, Leslie B. Nissen Jan 2012

Curriculum And The Life Erratic: The Geographic Cure, Leslie B. Nissen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation examines a subset of Children of Alcoholics, whom I call Geographic Cure Children, who cope with both fermented parenting (as I have termed it) AND transient schooling. Viewed by schools and school systems simply as “highly mobile” students, their frequent school changes tell only part of the story. Geographic Cure Children arrive at their newest classrooms bearing the heavy burdens of emotional trauma and dark secrets about the Life Erratic. However, due to frequent mobility, their access to help or support is sketchy at best. Through currere, I employ autobiographical and psychoanalytic lenses to explore the intersection of …

Relationship Of Select Admissions Criteria To Pre-Licensure Requirements In A Graduate Degree Program In Occupational Therapy, Sharon Delaney Swift Jan 2012

Relationship Of Select Admissions Criteria To Pre-Licensure Requirements In A Graduate Degree Program In Occupational Therapy, Sharon Delaney Swift

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As the profession of occupational therapy continues to become widely recognized as a top career choice, the number of applications to occupational therapy educational programs continues to rise. To date there has been little research regarding the admission process and the admission variables used to select candidates for admission. Healthcare professions such as occupational therapy must reliably select those applicants who can succeed in the academic classroom and in the clinical setting by providing competent compassionate patient care.

This study sought to examine whether select cognitive and non-cognitive admission variables could be used to predict graduate performance on pre-licensure requirements …
