Piezoelectric materials have the ability to provide desired transformation from mechanical to electrical energy and vice versa. When a mechanical force is applied to the piezoelectric material an electrical voltage is generated and when an electrical voltage is applied to the piezoelectric material it gets strained or deformed. Several recent mass evacuations, including those in advance of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans and Hurricane Rita in Houston, have demonstrated the effects of limited planning for carless populations. The lack of planning left a significant portion of the mobility-limited population of both these cities unable to flee in advance of the storms. Composite adhesively bonded joint structures have seen increased use over conventional riveted due to their ease of manufacturing and quality strength-to-weight ratios. However, adhesively bonded joints lack the rigidity and failure strength of riveted assemblies, due to high stress concentrations which develop in the adhesive layer, which makes them prone to undesirable deformation and failure. Piezoelectric materials feature the ability to produce mechanical strain when subjected to an applied voltage and vice-versa. In this research, we have studied and analyzed the physical and electrical properties of carbon nanotubes. Based on the reported models for current transport behavior in non-ballistic CNT-FETs, we have built a dynamic model for non-ballistic CNT-FETs. We have also extended the surface potential model of a non-ballistic CNT-FET to a ballistic CNT-FET and developed a current transport model for ballistic CNT-FETs. The Scenic Highway area of the PetroProcessors of Louisiana, Inc. (PPI) Superfund site located near Baton Rouge, LA, has groundwater contaminated with a variety of chlorinated alkanes (e.g., 1,2-dichloroethane, 1,2-dichloropropane) and alkenes (e.g., trichloroethene and vinyl chloride). In March 2009, a field-scale pilot test was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of injecting diluted agricultural feed grade molasses into the groundwater in an effort to stimulate in-situ reductive dechlorination of these chlorinated contaminants. Thermal Analog To Afm Force-Displacement Measurements For Nanoscale Interfacial Contact Resistance, Brian D. Iverson, John E. Blendell, Suresh V. Garimella

Thermal diffusion measurements on PMMA-coated Si substrates using heated AFM tips were performed to determine the contact resistance between an organic thin film and Si. The measurement methodology presented demonstrates how the thermal contrast signal obtained during a force-displacement ramp is used to quantify the resistance to heat transfer through an internal interface. The results also delineate the interrogation thickness beyond which thermal diffusion in the organic thin film is not affected appreciably by the underlying substrate.

As mankind reaches to explore extreme environments in space, the application of ceramics surface coatings is increasing. The 2005 mission concept for Solar Probe used a unique design to achieve the necessary thermal control for a very close approach to the solar corona, including the use of a highly refractory, electrically insulating ceramic coating over a carbon-carbon composite heat shield. The proposed trajectory takes the spacecraft from a Jovian fly-by to within 4 solar radii of the Sun, spanning 5 orders of magnitude in solar radiation and solar wind plasma density as well as spacecraft temperatures from <100 K to >2000 K. Routine identification of pathogenic microorganisms predominantly based on nutritional and biochemical tests is a time-consuming process, but delay may lead to fatal consequences at times. In this work, nanoparticle-induced nanoSPR enhanced IR spectroscopy was used in conjunction with a background elimination data processing algorithm to directly identify microorganisms in mixed cultures. It was demonstrated that the microbial composition of mixtures of different E. coli strains could be accurately identified using our method, at a concentration level of 103 CFU mL-1. Biosecure livestock mortality composting systems have been used to dispose of diseased livestock mortalities. In those types of system, visual inspection of carcass degradation is not possible and monitoring VOCs (volatile organic compounds) released by carcasses is a new approach to assess progress of the composting process. BACKGROUND: The octapeptide Angiotensin II is a key hormone that acts via its receptor AT1R in the brainstem to modulate the blood pressure control circuits and thus plays a central role in the cardiac and respiratory homeostasis. This modulation occurs via activation of a complex network of signaling proteins and transcription factors, leading to changes in levels of key genes and proteins. Field sampling can be a major expense for planning within-field management in precision agriculture. An efficient sampling strategy should address knowledge gaps, rather than exhaustively collect redundant data. Modification of existing schemes is possible by incorporating prior knowledge of spatial patterns within the field. In this study, spatial uncertainty of prior digital elevation model (DEM) estimates was used to locate adaptive re-survey regions in the field. This article presents the biochemical methane potential (BMP) results from the anaerobic digestion (AD) of switchgrass. Triplicate BMP assays were performed on: untreated switchgrass, aqueous ammonia soaking (AAS) pretreated switchgrass (soaked in 29.5% reagent-grade aqueous ammonia at 5 L kg-1 switchgrass for 5 d), and AAS-pretreated switchgrass plus cellulytic enzymes at 12.5, 25, 62.5, and 125 filter paper units (FPU) enzyme g-1 volatile solids (VS).
