Improved Operational Limits For Offshore Pipelay Vessels, Daniel Rey Givan 2012 University of New Orleans

Improved Operational Limits For Offshore Pipelay Vessels, Daniel Rey Givan

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Subsea pipelines are used extensively throughout the world’s oceans to transport oil and gas from offshore facilities to land, often hundreds of miles. These pipelines range in diameter from three to sixty inches and are installed in deeper depths every year, currently as deep as 2,900 meters. Pipeline construction and installation costs are a large percentage of offshore projects and thus, methods toward reducing costs is an imperative objective. With pipeline installation projects taking place in harsher environments, vessel operability is vital. This work presents an improved method for determining limiting criteria for pipelay operations to more effectively plan and …

Correlation Of Shear Strength Between Longitudial And Transverse Specimens, Erasto A. Fernandez 2012 University of New Orleans

Correlation Of Shear Strength Between Longitudial And Transverse Specimens, Erasto A. Fernandez

University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, new methods for shear strength are proposed and backed up through extensive experimentation, ABAQUS models and data analysis of Titanium welds of three different alloys. The results are compared with those obtained by using the procedure outlined by AWS B4 for calculating Shear Strength in the transverse and longitudinal directions; this equation is widely used by the American Welding Society (AWS) and all those in search of more efficient designs involving welding.

It is a well-documented issue that the equation provided by AWS yields a large discrepancy between the values for shear strength of longitudinal and transverse …

Electrohydrodynamic Enhancement Of Heat Transfer And Mass Transport In Gaseous Media, Bulk Dielectric Liquids And Dielectric Thin Liquid Films, Seyed Reza Mahmoudi 2012 The University of Western Ontario

Electrohydrodynamic Enhancement Of Heat Transfer And Mass Transport In Gaseous Media, Bulk Dielectric Liquids And Dielectric Thin Liquid Films, Seyed Reza Mahmoudi

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Controlling transport phenomena in liquid and gaseous media through electrostatic forces has brought new important scientific and industrial applications. Although numerous EHD applications have been explored and extensively studied so far, the fast-growing technologies, mainly in the semiconductor industry, introduce new challenges and demands. These challenges require enhancement of heat transfer and mass transport in small scales (sometimes in molecular scales) to remove highly concentrated heat fluxes from reduced size devices. Electric field induced flows, or electrohydrodynamics (EHD), have shown promise in both macro and micro-scale devices.

Several existing problems in EHD heat transfer enhancements were investigated in this thesis. …

The Use Of Excess Aircraft As Maximization Of Resources, Jean Paul Pion Garcia 2012 Western Michigan University

The Use Of Excess Aircraft As Maximization Of Resources, Jean Paul Pion Garcia

Honors Theses

The United States currently has within just 6 airfields approximately 4,600 grounded aircraft. Out of these excess aircraft, approximately 66,900 metric tons of secondary aluminum could be extracted. All this amount of material equals to approximately 147 million US dollars if sold to the current aluminum market price; the United States government could save up to 450 million US dollars just in electrical power expenses by choosing to recycle these aircraft, instead of producing primary aluminum out of bauxite. Recycling all these aircraft, would also have a positive impact in the environment, since hundreds of acres would be freed from …

Commentary On: Mann, Steve (2012): Wearable Computing, Katina Michael, M.G. Michael 2012 University of Wollongong

Commentary On: Mann, Steve (2012): Wearable Computing, Katina Michael, M.G. Michael

Associate Professor Katina Michael

In Professor Steve Mann- inventor, physicist, engineer, mathematician, scientist, designer, developer, project director, filmmaker, artist, instrumentalist, author, photographer, actor, activist- we see so much of the paradigmatic classical Greek philosopher. I recall asking Steve if technology shaped society or society shaped technology. He replied along the lines that the question was superfluous. Steve instead pointed to praxis, from which all theory, lessons or skills stem, are practiced, embodied and realized. Steve has always been preoccupied by the application of his ideas into form. In this way too, he can be considered a modern day Leonardo Da Vinci.

A Composite Structural Steel And Prestressed Concrete Beam For Building Floor Systems, Nathan deWit 2012 University of Nebraska-Lincoln

A Composite Structural Steel And Prestressed Concrete Beam For Building Floor Systems, Nathan Dewit

Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Dissertations, Thesis, and Student Research

Precast prestressed concrete beams, such as rectangular and inverted tee beam, currently used in residential and commercial buildings are deep, heavy, and limited to span-to-depth ratios of 15. The research proposes a composite structural steel and prestressed concrete beam that is shallow, light, easy to produce and erect, and able to achieve a span-to-depth ratio of 24. The proposed beam is designed to be used with precast columns, hollow-core planks, and a cast-in-place topping to create a moment-resisting floor system that minimizes the need for shear walls. The goal of this system is to eliminate as many of the limitations …

Defining Industry Expectations And Misconceptions Of Art And Technology Co-Creativity, Vanessa C. Brasfield 2012 Purdue University

Defining Industry Expectations And Misconceptions Of Art And Technology Co-Creativity, Vanessa C. Brasfield

Department of Computer Graphics Technology Degree Theses

The primary purpose of this study was to establish whether or not students and industry professionals share the same views about what students should be learning in animation education, what skills are necessary, and whether or not students graduating with a bachelor’s degree would be adequately prepared for an entry level position. To establish where misconceptions lie, surveys were issued to three groups: undergraduate students, post-graduate students, and industry professionals. These surveys were then analyzed using paired t-test for validation and question relevance, and ANOVA models to establish whether or not groups shared viewpoints. These data established significance within the …

In Memoriam: Associate Professor Dr Elaine Lawrence, Katina Michael

Associate Professor Katina Michael

Despite being a graduate of the rigorous Bachelor of Information Technology at the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS) in 1996, I was unfortunate in that I missed being taught by Associate Professor Elaine Lawrence who began working at UTS in 1990 as a Lecturer in Computing Science. Dr Lawrence became a senior lecturer in 2000, and subsequently an associate professor in 2006. Our paths crossed in 2002 when I was tasked to deliver a new course entitled “eBusiness Principles” in my first year of lecturing at the University of Wollongong, and after an initial scurry to find an adequate textbook, …

Conference papers

In the context of green supply chain management, green purchasing has received increased attention over the past decade and the strategic importance of introducing green aspects into purchasing practices has been recognised. Despite this growing importance, little has been written in relation to purchasing green transport and logistics services. Considering the strong environmental impact associated with transport and logistics activities, much remains to be learned concerning buyer’s practices when sourcing more sustainable services from third party logistics companies (3PLs). The aim of this paper is to explore practices of buying green transport and logistics services in three different European countries …

Air-To-Air Missile Vector Scoring, Nicholas Sweeney 2012 Air Force Institute of Technology

Air-To-Air Missile Vector Scoring, Nicholas Sweeney

Theses and Dissertations

An air-to-air missile vector scoring system is proposed for test and evaluation applications. Three different linear missile dynamics models are considered: a six-state constant velocity model and nine-state constant acceleration and three-dimensional coordinated turn models. Frequency modulated continuous wave radar sensors, carefully located to provide spherical coverage around the target, provide updates of missile kinematic information relative to a drone aircraft. Data from the radar sensors is fused with predictions from one of the three missile models using either an extended Kalman filter, an unscented Kalman filter or a particle filter algorithm. The performance of all nine model/filter combinations are …

Mitigating Diminishing Manufacturing Sources/Material Shortages (Dms/Ms) And Obsolescence For The T-6 Canopy Fracturing Initiation System (Cfis), Richard P. Carrano 2012 Air Force Institute of Technology

Mitigating Diminishing Manufacturing Sources/Material Shortages (Dms/Ms) And Obsolescence For The T-6 Canopy Fracturing Initiation System (Cfis), Richard P. Carrano

Theses and Dissertations

The Joint Primary Aircraft Training System (JPATS) lost the supplier for its canopy fracturing initiation system (CFIS) with no prospect for a replacement. This forced a complete CFIS redesign to supply both an active production line and sustain fielded aircraft. Compounding the problem, the existing CFIS became obsolete, which forced an interim design to be produced until a final long term solution was fielded. This thesis developed a method to optimize the redesign by determining the lowest cost path for both fielding the interim design and phasing in the final retrofit. Using the Excel Solver® modeling program, an optimal rate …

Simplified Daylight Spectrum Approximation By Blending Two Light Emitting Diode Sources, Jacob M. Gilman 2012 Air Force Institute of Technology

Simplified Daylight Spectrum Approximation By Blending Two Light Emitting Diode Sources, Jacob M. Gilman

Theses and Dissertations

Energy-conscious facility designs strive to include natural daylight in workspaces. To improve the efficiency of illumination, significant efforts are underway to adopt more efficient light emitting diode (LED) lamps and to effectively integrate daylight with active dimming of electric lighting. However, the correlated color temperature (CCT) and spectral content of daylight varies throughout the day while existing electric light sources produce light with a fixed CCT, resulting in mixed-illumination environments. The color rendering requirements for a lamp that permits the selection of color temperature across a significant portion of the daylight locus is explored. The analysis indicates that it is …
