Interaction Of Optomechanical Cavities With Acoustic Waves And Oscillators, Ke Huang 2020 University of New Mexico

Interaction Of Optomechanical Cavities With Acoustic Waves And Oscillators, Ke Huang

Optical Science and Engineering ETDs

Resonators and oscillators are key elements in a wide variety of natural and manmade systems. As such understanding and exploiting their dynamics both as isolated devices and members of coupled systems has been the subject of intensive investigation for more than a century. The advent of optomechanical resonators (OMRs) that support strong coupling between optical and mechanical modes resulting in self-sustained optomechanical oscillations, has created new opportunities for device development and implementation of coupled oscillatory systems. One aspect of this thesis is focused on exploring some of the unique features of OMRs and optomechanical oscillators (OMOs) that can be exploited …

Generation Of Correlated Dual Frequency Combs With Pm Fiber Lasers For High-Precision Metrology, Hanieh Afkhamiardakani 2020 Center for High Technology Materials

Generation Of Correlated Dual Frequency Combs With Pm Fiber Lasers For High-Precision Metrology, Hanieh Afkhamiardakani

Optical Science and Engineering ETDs

Intracavity Phase Interferometry (IPI) using two correlated, counter-propagating frequency combs (pulse trains) in mode-locked lasers has evolved into a powerful technique for high-precision metrology. In this method a physical parameter to be measured imparts a phase shift onto a pulse circulating in the laser cavity. Inside a laser cavity, that phase shift becomes a frequency shift (phase shift/round-trip time) applied to the whole frequency comb created by this pulse as it exits the cavity at each round-trip. This frequency shift is measured by interfering this comb with a reference comb created by a reference pulse circulating in the same mode-locked …

Radiation-Balanced Fiber Lasers And Amplifiers, Esmaeil Mobini Souchelmaei Mr 2020 University of New Mexico

Radiation-Balanced Fiber Lasers And Amplifiers, Esmaeil Mobini Souchelmaei Mr

Optical Science and Engineering ETDs

Over the past decades, high-power fiber lasers and amplifiers have been extensively under research to achieve higher output powers. However, temperature rise in the core of fiber lasers and amplifiers has been a big issue in power-scaling. Radiation-balancing is a viable technique introduced for effective heat mitigation in lasers and amplifiers by S. Bowman in 1995. Radiation-balancing relies on solid-state laser cooling as a self-cooling mechanism to mitigate the generated heat in lasers and amplifiers. To implement the mentioned idea in fiber lasers and amplifiers, a set of issues should be scrutinized; (i) the amenability of silica glass (as the …

Should you care what companies do with their profits? Two U.S. democratic senators, Chuck Schumer and Bernie Sanders, in an article in the New York Times, argue that we should all care because what companies do with their profits can damage the economy and jobs.

Development Of Water Coning Control Design Metrics In Naturally Fractured Reservoirs, Samir Prasun 2020 Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mechanical College

Development Of Water Coning Control Design Metrics In Naturally Fractured Reservoirs, Samir Prasun

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Naturally fractured reservoirs (NFRs) with bottom-water are known for their instant water breakthrough and severe water coning that reduces oil recovery. This is because water channels through the highly permeable fractures easily connecting the well to the aquifer bypassing the oil contained in the matrix. Remedial techniques such as producing below critical-oil rate, optimizing the well spacing and installing the downhole water sink (DWS)/ downhole water loop (DWL) technology, have already been successfully tested in single-porosity reservoirs (SPR). However, applicability of these techniques in NFRs are unknown since only a few studies have been performed on their feasibility in NFRs, …

Bio Circuits For Evolutionary Biotech, Camilo Toruno 2020 Dartmouth College

Bio Circuits For Evolutionary Biotech, Camilo Toruno

ENGS 86 Independent Projects (AB Students)

The field of bioengineering has much promise for renewable chemical production, bioremediation, and of course medical applications. Developing new useful microorganisms is extremely time and capital intensive, typically taking 50 million USD and eight years. This is due in large part to the low throughput techniques that are characteristic of the field of metabolic engineering. Here we describe the modification of an existing synthetic biosensor to measure the pharmaceutical dopamine, and the use of a circuit simulator Cadence to predict improvements to the biosensor. This biosensor paired with directed evolution techniques could reach throughputs of 5 million cells per day …
