Ontology-Based Information Extraction For Analyzing It Services, Amit Deokar, Sagnika Sen 2009 Dakota State University

Ontology-Based Information Extraction For Analyzing It Services, Amit Deokar, Sagnika Sen

Amit Deokar

Service Level Agreements (SLA) for multi-service Information Technology (IT) outsourcing contracts contain vast amounts of textual information. The SLAs provide details about a specific service, Key Performance Indicators (KPI) to measure its performance; as well as process elements, such as activities, events, and resources that are integral in achieving performance goals. However, KPIs and the process elements may be interrelated. The knowledge of such interrelationships is often tacitly present in the SLAs. The aim of our research is to extract this hidden information from IT service contracts and analyze them to empower customers of IT services to make better performance ...

The Context Matters: Maritime Safety In The Vessel Traffic Service (Vts) Domain, Gesa Praetorius, Margareta Lützhöft, Karl Bruno 2009 Selected Works

The Context Matters: Maritime Safety In The Vessel Traffic Service (Vts) Domain, Gesa Praetorius, Margareta Lützhöft, Karl Bruno

Gesa Praetorius

Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) is a service to the maritime community implemented to promote and improve maritime safety. In recent years VTS has become a topic of increased interest for maritime stakeholders and the general public. To derive insights on how maritime safety is constructed in the VTS domain this exploratory study was conducted. Four VTS centres were visited and 15 VTS operators were interviewed and observed at work. Further a focus group interview with 8 VTS operators with focus on decision support tools in the VTS domain was conducted. The results of the study indicate that VTS operators define ...

Learning Styles And Entrance Requirements For Online Master’S Programs, Stan Lightner, Mark Doggett, Vesta Whisler 2009 Western Kentucky University

Learning Styles And Entrance Requirements For Online Master’S Programs, Stan Lightner, Mark Doggett, Vesta Whisler

Mark Doggett

As more online graduate programs are created and traditional programs shift to an online format, the need to identify and understand skill sets necessary for students’ success becomes more apparent. Typically, graduate programs rely on entrance requirements such as the GRE, undergraduate GPA, and a writing sample to evaluate an applicant’s potential success. Is it reasonable to expect that other entrance requirements might be needed for student success in online graduate degree programs?

Research comparing learning and personality styles of online learners exists; however, application of this information as part of the admissions process for online graduate programs is ...

Key Establishment For Layered Group-Based Wireless Sensor Networks, Xueping Li, Dengfeng Yang, Rapinder Sawhney 2009 University of Tennessee - Knoxville

Key Establishment For Layered Group-Based Wireless Sensor Networks, Xueping Li, Dengfeng Yang, Rapinder Sawhney

Xueping Li

Establishing pairwise keys for sensors is crucial to secure communications in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). Several key pre-distribution schemes have been proposed to establish pairwise keys, but they are not scalable and suffer from a dramatic degradation of security when the number of compromised sensor exceeds a threshold. In this paper, we propose a Layered Group-based Key Establishment (LGKE) scheme, in which a logic top layer ensures the scalability through an Exclusion Basic System (EBS) technique while a logic low layer adopts a group-based key preload scheme to ensure the security. The security analysis and quantitative evaluation show the superiority ...

Enacting Reliability: First Steps To Define Safety In The Vts Domain, Gesa Praetorius, Karl Bruno, Margareta Lützhöft 2009 Selected Works

Enacting Reliability: First Steps To Define Safety In The Vts Domain, Gesa Praetorius, Karl Bruno, Margareta Lützhöft

Although the term maritime safety is widely used in the maritime industry, there is no exact definition of what it entails. An explorative study of the VTS domain has been conducted to approach the concept of maritime safety. Four VTS centres were visited and 16 VTS operators were interviewed and observed to derive insights in how maritime safety is constructed from the perspective of an operator. Further, definitions of maritime safety by central actors in the maritime domain have been investigated through a literature study and several interviews. The results indicate that there is no common definition of the term ...

Impacts Of Supply Disruptions And Customer Differentiation In A Partial-Backordering Inventory System, Xueping Li, Yuerong Chen 2009 University of Tennessee - Knoxville

Impacts Of Supply Disruptions And Customer Differentiation In A Partial-Backordering Inventory System, Xueping Li, Yuerong Chen

Xueping Li

In this paper, we study a single-product inventory system which involves a supplier, a retailer, and differentiated customers. The supplier provides products to the retailer which in turn sells products to its customers. The supplier is unreliable and is subject to random disruptions. The retailer adopts a periodic-review inventory policy, under which the retailer reviews its inventory position every a fixed period of time and decides whether a replenishment is needed or not. Partial backordering is applied when a stockout occurs. That is, under the situations of stockouts, customers can choose either to backorder products or to abandon the purchase ...

Roads Or Radar: The Tradeoff Between Investments In Infrastructure And Forecasting When Facing Hurricane Risk, Eric Bickel, Seong Dae Kim 2009 University of Texas at Austin

Roads Or Radar: The Tradeoff Between Investments In Infrastructure And Forecasting When Facing Hurricane Risk, Eric Bickel, Seong Dae Kim

Eric Bickel

When faced with a significant risk, society must decide howmuch to invest in prediction and response. For example, in the face of hurricane risk how much should we invest in better forecasting versus increased evacuation speed? To address this need, we develop a Markov decision processes model to analyze the interaction between the emergency response system and the emergency forecasting system. The model shows the tradeoff between the two investments given a budget limit. In addition, the research indicates that the superiority of the investment changes sharply by the lead time.
