Remanufacturing Process Planning Considering Quality Uncertainties, Environmental Taxes And Incentives, Kuanjui Chen

Theses and Dissertations

As environmental issues are gradually being valued by governments and societies, companies have begun to engage in economic sustainable practices such as remanufacturing, reuse and recycling, among other socially responsible practices. The broader impact of these practices enables companies to archive the goal of circular economies. Under normal circumstances, consumers’ used products have often been released into landfills, resulting in environmental pollution. This is especially so for electronic products since most materials used in their production are non-biodegradable. This research addresses the practice of remanufacturing. The remanufacturing value of the products gradually declines with the usage--also referred to as the …

Allocation Of Public Resources: Bringing Order To Chaos, Lance Clifner 2020 Chapman University

Allocation Of Public Resources: Bringing Order To Chaos, Lance Clifner

Computational and Data Sciences (PhD) Dissertations

Science Olympiad (SO) is a team-based academic competition involving multiple subject areas (Events) with arcane rules governing the team composition. Add to the mix parental contention over which student(s) get on the “All-Star” team, and you have a potentially explosive situation. This project brings order and logic to school-based SO programs and defuses tense milestones through the implementation of an institutional structure that: assigns students to Events based on solicited student preferences for the Events, collects objective student performance data, composes competitive teams based on student performance (aka “Moneyball”), and brings transparency to the Team Selection process through crowdsourcing. The …

Application Of Classification In Machine Learning: An Analysis Of Highway-Rail Grade Crossing Systems Safety, Christopher John Helmer Cox

Theses and Dissertations

Highway-rail grade crossing accidents are the second leading cause of fatalities within the railway transportation industry. Highway-rail grade crossing fatality statistics have failed to improve over the last decade, and in some years have increased. Because of these trends, research has found that considerable Federal funding initiatives exist to support and develop contemporary risk reduction methodologies involving machine learning and artificial intelligence. In accord with these initiatives, this thesis investigates the highway-rail grade crossing safety problem using machine learning to implement an ensemble decision tree-based classification application. The resulting classifier has been validated to achieve a less than three percent …

Development of smart grids along with communication technologies have led to the increased attention and adoption of demand side management (DSM) in the residential sector. Among various DSM schemes, demand response (DR) is a market- based mechanism to shave peak electricity consumption at the system level. In the past decade, the academia has seen a growing literature studying load management methodologies for residential consumers. A typical demand response program has three important facets: the energy cost, comfort of the consumers and overall system efficiency. In this dissertation, we investigate and develop models for effective load control to minimize energy cost …

A Core Reference Hierarchical Primitive Ontology For Electronic Medical Records Semantics Interoperability, Ziniya Zahedi 2020 Old Dominion University

A Core Reference Hierarchical Primitive Ontology For Electronic Medical Records Semantics Interoperability, Ziniya Zahedi

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Currently, electronic medical records (EMR) cannot be exchanged among hospitals, clinics, laboratories, pharmacies, and insurance providers or made available to patients outside of local networks. Hospital, laboratory, pharmacy, and insurance provider legacy databases can share medical data within a respective network and limited data with patients. The lack of interoperability has its roots in the historical development of electronic medical records. Two issues contribute to interoperability failure. The first is that legacy medical record databases and expert systems were designed with semantics that support only internal information exchange. The second is ontological commitment to the semantics of a particular knowledge …

Cyber-systems provide convenience, ubiquity, economic advantage, and higher efficiency to both individuals and organizations. However, vulnerabilities of the cyber domain also offer malicious actors with the opportunities to compromise the most sensitive information. Recent cybersecurity incidents show that a group of hackers can cause a massive data breach, resulting in companies losing competitive advantage, reputation, and money. Governments have since taken some actions in protecting individuals and companies from such crime by authorizing federal agencies and developing regulations. To protect the public from losing their most sensitive records, governments have also been compelling companies to follow cybersecurity regulations. If companies …

A Framework For Adaptive Capacity In Complex Systems, Abdulrahman Alfaqiri 2020 Old Dominion University

A Framework For Adaptive Capacity In Complex Systems, Abdulrahman Alfaqiri

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Complex systems are characterized by their high level of inter-connectivity, ambiguity, and emergence. Therefore, a failure in one element of a system (e.g. cyber layer) due to external or internal disturbances can lead to a cascade effect that may influence all elements of the system. Consequently, the complex system will not be able to perform its functional performance. Threats related to complex systems are very dynamic, fast, complex and damage can be severe. Thus, to respond to the dynamic and unpredictable nature of these threats, complex systems need to be highly adaptive to survive and thrive in the face of …

Unfortunately, appropriate techniques that take full advantage of data-rich images for control charting are …

Analyzing The Fractal Dimension Of Various Musical Pieces, Nathan Clark 2020 University of Arkansas, Fayetteville

Analyzing The Fractal Dimension Of Various Musical Pieces, Nathan Clark

Industrial Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

One of the most common tools for evaluating data is regression. This technique, widely used by industrial engineers, explores linear relationships between predictors and the response. Each observation of the response is a fixed linear combination of the predictors with an added error element. The method is built on the assumption that this error is normally distributed across all observations and has a mean of zero. In some cases, it has been found that the inherent variation is not the result of a random variable, but is instead the result of self-symmetric properties of the observations. For data with these …

Improved Crack Removing Algorithm For Quad-Tree Terrain Rendering, Wan Ming, Liang Xia, Fengming Zhang

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: In 3D large scale multi-resolution terrain rendering, an improved algorithm based on LOD control and visibility for crack removing was proposed. It is proved that quad-tree grid is restricted while the ratio of visible distance to grid extent is large than 3. In preprocess stage, cracks were classified to raise crack and dropped crack, and crack patches with the same size as cracks were generated and attached to the latter. In real-time rendering stage, no special calculation by CPU for restriction of level of detail or for crack removing between adjacent grids was needed. Example shows that …

Performance Analysis Of Netted Radar Data Fusion Systems, Zhijie Chen, Bin Rao, Yongzhen Li, Zhiwei Zong

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: The performance analysis of netted radar data fusion systems was proposed. The principles of two representative radar netting modes (i.e., centralized fusion and distributed fusion) were introduced and the associated capabilities of anti-jamming, anti-stealth, fusion accuracy, fusion discrimination, and communication requirements were quantitatively analyzed. Simulation results indicate that the netting essence is, centralized fusion by using ‘or' rule to complement information and realize trajectory composition whereas distributed fusion by using ‘and' rule to reduce information redundancy and realize discrimination ability. The research can provide some enlightenment for the newly-developed intellective netted radar data fusion systems.
