The practice of human factors in agriculture presents numerous challenges for the researcher. Difficulties include measuring operator behaviors in the agricultural field as well as identifying individual tasks, order of tasks, length of tasks, and operator motivation for each task. To confidently build a baseline for how operators use and appropriate their resources during the planting agricultural season, a variety of qualitative and quantitative research methods were combined to create OCTA (operator-centered task analysis), a hybrid methodology to observe, document, explain, and potentially predict operator behaviors in the field. Virtual reality has grown rapidly over the past decade, yet visually induced motion sickness (VIMS), continues to affect the usability of this technology. Aside from medicine, physical hand-eye-coordination tasks have been found to be effective in mitigating symptoms of VIMS, however the need for equipment outside of virtual reality limits the usefulness of these mitigation techniques. In recent decades, commercial aviation accidents have occurred due to human-machine interaction (HMI) problems known as “mode confusion.” This is caused, in some cases, by a lack of understanding of onboard systems by pilots. Large amounts of Flight Operational Quality Assurance (FOQA) data are available, analysis of which could assist in identification of safety risks in daily operations. Intelligent tutor systems have been quite successful in instruction of individuals (Koedinger, Anderson, Hadley, & Mark, 1997; Ritter, Kulikowich, Lei, McGuire, & Morgan, 2007; Vanlehn, et al., 2005), but multiple challenges exist when attempting to tutor a team. Sottilare, Holden, Brawner, and Goldberg (2011) describe some of the architectural challenges of team tutoring at a high level in terms of functional requirements. In this paper we describe specific challenges in terms of implementing a team architecture within the Generalized Intelligent Framework for Tutoring (GIFT), including simultaneous startup and synchronization with distributed team members, maintaining state of multiple users, and timing feedback for teams and individuals appropriately.

A method is provided for semi-automatic operation of a portable control device for a remote-controlled, unmanned vehicle. The method includes the steps of monitoring parameters of an operational environment of the portable control device, switching from a manual operation mode to a semi-automatic operation mode in response to occurrence of predetermined criteria within the operational environment, and presenting a semi-automatic operation graphical user interface to a user of the portable control device. Most of the previous studies of the lumbar region have not considered the influence of pelvic and lower extremity characteristics on the performance of the lumbar region. The goal of the current study was to explore these more systems-level effects by assessing the effects of a pelvic/lower extremity constraint on the biomechanical response of the lumbar spine in an in-vivo experiment. Our companion paper demonstrated the importance of a systems-level perspective on spine biomechanics by showing the effects of lower extremity constraints during simple, trunk flexion-extension motions. This paper explores the impact of trunk muscle fatigue and stress-relaxation of lumbar passive tissues on this systems-level response. Twelve participants performed experimental protocols to achieve lumbar passive tissue stress-relaxation fatigue and lumbar muscle fatigue.
