Make And Characterize Microfluidic Devices With Gelatin: Do-It-Yourself (Diy) Laboratory At Home, Marissa Youderian, Xilai Song, Mark Lancaster, Ahana Jhamb, David J. Jones, Gyuseok L. Kim

Educational Materials

Microfluidic devices have been fabricated with gelatin and paper clips. Optimization of fabrication and characterization process has been carried out systemically by varying gelatin-to-water ratio, bonding time and connector type. We find that the higher gelatin-to-water ratio and the luer lock syringe tip provide a greater success rate, whereas the influence of bonding time is limited. The Reynolds number was calculated to identify whether the fluid shows laminar or turbulent flow.

With the increasing prevalence of traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) in road traffic accidents (RTAs), it was identified that the shape of the vehicle's front end and pedestrian postures prior to impact significantly influence pedestrian head injuries. However, the effect of vehicle front shape parameters and gait postures on TBIs sustained in car-to-pedestrian collisions (CPCs) has yet to be quantified. Micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) devices have many unique advantages, and offer an exciting entrance for students into the field of nanotechnology and nanofabrication. In this article, an educational hands-on laboratory protocol with MEMS devices is proposed. Using a paper airplane, an Arduino, and the MPU 6050 MEMS accelerometer/gyroscope sensor students are able to create a graphical aircraft attitude indicator. The data is then processed on the Arduino, which is connected to a computer. The computer can then run graphics software displaying a digital aircraft attitude indicator showing the roll and pitch of the aircraft live.

Dielectric elastomers (DE) are novel composite architectures capable of large actuation strains and the ability to be formed into a variety of actuator configurations. However, the high voltage requirement of DE actuators limits their applications for a variety of applications. Fiber actuators composed of DE fibers are particularly attractive as they can be formed into artificial muscle architectures. The interest in manufacturing micro or nanoscale DE fibers is increasing due to the possible applications in tissue engineering, filtration, drug delivery, catalysis, protective textiles, and sensors. Porous polymer membrane filters are widely used in separation and filtration process. Micro- and ultra-filtration membranes are commonly used in biopharmaceutical applications such as filtering viruses and separating proteins from a carrier solution. SPR 220-3 photoresist was spin-coated onto a silicon wafer, exposed using a Heidelberg DWL66+ laserwriter at different laser powers, and developed at different temperatures. The effect of developer temperature on photoresist contrast was examined. Results show that increasing developer temperature decreased photoresist contrast and increased required dose.

It is extremely common for servers in the restaurant industry to have pint glasses slip off their serving tray, wasting both time and money for the restaurant. I have designed a sleeve attachment that will clip on to the bottom of a pint glass. The metal sleeve attachment will be attracted to a magnet placed into the serving tray. The present disclosure includes solid-state transducers, a system, and a method. In one embodiment, a solid-state transducer includes a housing, a first end portion, a second end portion, a plurality of electrical conductors, and a thin-film resistive material. The thin-film resistive material is disposed between and in electrical communication with a plurality of electrical conductors. The thin-film resistive material is configured to receive one or more electrical signals from the plurality of electrical conductors, and generate thermal oscillations to create pressure waves in a medium in response to receiving the one or more electrical signals.

Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) uses quantum tunneling effect to study the surfaces of materials on an atomic scale. Since the probe of the microscope is on the order of nanometers away from the surface, the device is prone to noises due to vibrations from the surroundings.
