Design Of Area-Efficient Iir Filter Using Fppe, Ramyarani Nallathambi, Subbiah Veerana, Deepa Prabhakaran

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Floating point arithmetic circuits provide wide dynamic range and high precision, and they are widely used in scientific computing and signal processing applications, but the complexity increases in hardware implementations of floating point units. In VLSI design architecture, many applications suffer in size of the components used in logical operations. The aim of reducing architecture is to gain reduction in power loss and also in area, but the reduction in size of the components leads to an increase in delay and memory. Hence, to overcome these limitations and to optimize the area, a novel design of floating point processing element …

Monotone Data Modeling Using Rational Functions, Zoha Tariq, Farheen Ibraheem, Malik Zawwar Hussain, Muhammad Sarfraz

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Rational schemes for shape preservation of monotone data both in 2D and 3D setups have been developed. $C^1$ rational cubic and partially blended bicubic functions are employed for this purpose. Monotonicity is achieved by extracting constraints on parameters involved in the description of these rational functions. Monotone curves and surfaces have been obtained, which provide evidence that the algorithm used fits most types of monotone data and produces visually pleasing results.

Ifit: An Unsupervised Discretization Method Based On The Ramer-Douglas-Peucker Algorithm, Alev Mutlu, Furkan Göz, Orhan Akbulut

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Discretization is the process of converting continuous values into discrete values. It is a preprocessing step of several machine learning and data mining algorithms and the quality of discretization may drastically affect the performance of these algorithms. In this study we propose a discretization algorithm, namely line fitting-based discretization (lFIT), based on the Ramer--Douglas--Peucker algorithm. It is a static, univariate, unsupervised, splitting-based, global, and incremental discretization method where intervals are determined based on the Ramer--Douglas--Peucker algorithm and the quality of partitioning is assessed based on the standard error of the estimate. To evaluate the performance of the proposed method, a …

A Computational Study On Aging Effect For Facial Expression Recognition, Elena Sönmez

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This work uses newly introduced variations of the sparse representation-based classifier (SRC) to challenge the issue of automatic facial expression recognition (FER) with faces belonging to a wide span of ages. Since facial expression is one of the most powerful and immediate ways to disclose individuals? emotions and intentions, the study of emotional traits is an active research topic both in psychology and in engineering fields. To date, automatic FER systems work well with frontal and clean faces, but disturbance factors can dramatically decrease their performance. Aging is a critical disruption element, which is present in any real-world situation and …

Design Of A Range-Segmented Cmos Current-Mode Exponential Circuit, Chih-Jen Cheng, Kuo-Jen Lin, Jwu-E Chen

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

A CMOS current-mode exponential circuit is designed by plugging candidate circuits into a Taylor's approximation circuit to make a multiple-segment circuit. The selection of candidate circuits is dependent on a large linearity range in each segment. The proposed range-segmented circuit is different from all segments constructed only by quadratic circuits or only by linear circuits. The proposed circuit was simulated using UMC 0.18~$\mu$m CMOS technology. The output linearity of the circuit is 56.7~dB for gain error less than 0.5~dB, and the --3~dB bandwidth of the circuit is between 69 and 150~MHz for input range from --63 to 198~$\mu$A.

Low-Cost Multimode Diode-Pumped Tm:Yag And Tm:Luag Lasers, Ersen Beyatli

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

We report a continuous-wave operation of Tm:YAG and Tm:LuAG lasers pumped with a low-cost, multimode AlGaAs laser diode. First, the lifetime and the absorbance behavior of 5 mm, 6 % Tm$^{3+}$-doped YAG and LuAG crystals were thoroughly investigated. A low-cost multimode 3W laser diode at 781 nm was then used as a pump source for the Tm$^{3+}$-doped laser systems. Using three different output couplers, up to 636 mW of output power was obtained from Tm:YAG laser, with a slope efficiency of 29 % at 2017 nm. The maximum output power was 637 mW in the Tm:LuAG laser, with a slope …

An Adaptive Scheduling Scheme For Inhomogeneously Distributed Wireless Ad Hocnetworks, ADNAN FAZIL, AAMIR HASAN, MUHAMMAD ATIQUE UR REHMAN, IJAZ MANSOOR QURESHI 2019 TÜBİTAK

An Adaptive Scheduling Scheme For Inhomogeneously Distributed Wireless Ad Hocnetworks, Adnan Fazil, Aamir Hasan, Muhammad Atique Ur Rehman, Ijaz Mansoor Qureshi

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

An efficient scheduling strategy guarantees the simultaneous transmission and successful reception by the scheduled nodes even inside a congested wireless ad hoc network. Owing to the dispersed nature of ad hoc networks, the node packing algorithm needs to be implementable without having network-wide channel state information and should additionally be able to pack the optimum number of successful transmissions. The proposed algorithm, for a network with nonhomogeneously distributed nodes, makes the decision to either inhibit or permit an active interferer around an active receiver based on the interferer?s transmission power. The analysis evidenced that the suggested scheme provides an estimated …

A Method For Indoor Wi-Fi Location Based On Improved Back Propagation Neuralnetwork, Jinghui Chen, Chen Dong, Guorong He, Xiaoyu Zhang

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In order to achieve high precision on indoor location, a Wi-Fi indoor location method based on improved back propagation (BP) neural network is proposed. The classical BP neural network is optimized in real time by the ant colony optimization algorithm. Meanwhile, the momentum term is introduced to construct an improved four-layer BP neural network model. The model uses the Wi-Fi signal feature as the input of the BP neural network and succeeds in the area classification under multiple Wi-Fi signal features. The experimental results demonstrate that the improved BP neural network can increase the classification accuracy of the classifier effectively, …

Fires generally occur due to human carelessness and the change in environmental conditions. The uncontrolled fire results in death incidents of humans and animals as well as severe threats to the ecosystem. The preservation of the natural environment is important. The wireless sensor networks, widely used in different monitoring applications, is used in this work. For fire detection, we use flame, smoke, temperature, humidity, and light intensity sensors in our proposed network node which is low-cost, reduced-size, and power-efficient. The experiments are performed in a well-controlled real-time environment. The proposed node transmits the sensed data to the central node. The …

Channel And Carrier Frequency Offset Estimation Based On Projection Onto Abidimensional Basis, ROBERTO CARRASCO ALVAREZ, RAMON PARRA MICHEL, ALDO GUSTAVO OROZCO LUGO, MARCO ANTONIO GURROLA NAVARRO 2019 TÜBİTAK

Channel And Carrier Frequency Offset Estimation Based On Projection Onto Abidimensional Basis, Roberto Carrasco Alvarez, Ramon Parra Michel, Aldo Gustavo Orozco Lugo, Marco Antonio Gurrola Navarro

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Two of the most counterproductive effects that must be dealt with in communication systems in realistic environments are carrier frequency offset (CFO) and time-varying channels. These problems are usually addressed by using independent approaches for each one. This paper introduces an algorithm that attacks both of these effects in a joint fashion. It is based on a rough compensation of CFO, and after considering that the remaining CFO uncertainty can be seen as part of the time-varying channel a channel estimation that includes that composite channel is performed. Particularly, the channel estimation based on projection onto a bidimensional basis is …

Improving The Redundancy Of Knuth?S Balancing Scheme For Packet Transmissionsystems, ELIE NGOMSEU MAMBOU, EBENEZER ESENOGHO, HENDRIK FERREIRA 2019 TÜBİTAK

Improving The Redundancy Of Knuth?S Balancing Scheme For Packet Transmissionsystems, Elie Ngomseu Mambou, Ebenezer Esenogho, Hendrik Ferreira

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

A simple scheme was proposed by Knuth to generate binary balanced code words from any information word. However, this method is limited in the sense that its redundancy is twice that of the full sets of balanced codes. The gap between Knuth?s algorithm?s redundancy and that of the full sets of balanced codes is significantly considerable. This paper attempts to reduce that gap. Furthermore, many constructions assume that a full balancing can be performed without showing the steps. A full balancing refers to the overall balancing of the encoded information together with the prefix. We propose an efficient way to …

Space-Track Modulation And Coding For High Density Aerial Vehicle Downlinknetworks With Free Space Optical And Visible Light Communications, BURHAN GÜLBAHAR 2019 TÜBİTAK

Space-Track Modulation And Coding For High Density Aerial Vehicle Downlinknetworks With Free Space Optical And Visible Light Communications, Burhan Gülbahar

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Aerial vehicles (AVs) have challenges in terms of realizing low complexity and wide coverage area wireless communications architectures, especially for crowded or high density groups of AVs with state-of-the-art free space optical (FSO) and radio frequency (RF) based system designs. FSO architectures generally target point-to-point high gain directional links while requiring strict acquisition and tracking due to the narrow beam width of laser transmitters with challenges of vibration, turbulence, misalignment, atmospheric absorption, scattering, and fading. In this article, a novel multiuser free space optical system design of modulation and coding denoted by space-track modulation and coding (STMC) is proposed for …

A Comparative Study Of Nonlinear Bayesian Filtering Algorithms For Estimation Ofgene Expression Time Series Data, NESRINE AMOR, ASMA MEDDEB, SAHBI MARROUCHI, SOUAD CHEBBI 2019 TÜBİTAK

A Comparative Study Of Nonlinear Bayesian Filtering Algorithms For Estimation Ofgene Expression Time Series Data, Nesrine Amor, Asma Meddeb, Sahbi Marrouchi, Souad Chebbi

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper addresses the problem of estimating the time series of a gene expression using nonlinear Bayesian filtering algorithms. The response of gene regulatory networks (GRNs) to functional requirements in the cell and environmental conditions evolves over time. Dynamic biological processes such as cancer progression and treatment recovery depend on the collected genetic profiles. These processes are behind genetic interactions that rewire over the course of time. The GRN was formulated as a nonlinear and non-Gaussian dynamic system defined by the gene measurement model and the unknown state is an evolution of the gene model. However, the GRN has a …

Path-Oriented Random Testing Through Iterative Partitioning (Ip-Prt), ESMAEEL NIKRAVAN, SAEED PARSA 2019 TÜBİTAK

Path-Oriented Random Testing Through Iterative Partitioning (Ip-Prt), Esmaeel Nikravan, Saeed Parsa

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Path-oriented random testing aims at generating a uniformly distributed sequence of test data from a program input domain space to traverse a desired execution path of the program. To this aim, this article proposes a new algorithm to refine a program inputs domain space from invalid subdomains not covering the path. The validity of the subdomains is checked by a constraint propagation method against the path constraints (PCs). The proposed algorithm uses a divide and conquer technique to iteratively split the inputs domain into subdomains and each time refutes those subdomains that are inconsistent with the PCs. The remaining shrunken …

Early Reliability Assessment Of Component-Based Software System Using Coloredpetri Net, Amir Hosseinzadeh Mokarram, Ayaz Isazadeh, Habib Izadkhah

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Assessment of reliability in the early stages of software development from architectural models is one of the major challenges that many studies have addressed in this field in the last decade. The main drawbacks of existing methods are the following: 1) considering equal impact for all parts of the software architecture on system reliability, and 2) inability to determine the contribution of each part of the software in the system failure. This paper introduces the extended version of the colored petri net as an underlying verifiable model to evaluate the reliability of a software system. The proposed model enhances reliability …

Prioritizing Interdependent Software Requirements Using Tensor And Fuzzy Graphs, NEGIN MISAGHIAN, HOMAYUN MOTAMENI, MOHSEN RABBANI 2019 TÜBİTAK

Prioritizing Interdependent Software Requirements Using Tensor And Fuzzy Graphs, Negin Misaghian, Homayun Motameni, Mohsen Rabbani

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Owing to the special stance of prioritizing tasks in requirements engineering processes, and as the requirements are not independent in nature, considering their dependencies is essential during the prioritizing process. Although different classifications of dependency types among requirements exist, only a few approaches in the prioritization process consider such valuable data (dependency among equirements). To achieve a practical prioritization, this study proposes a method based on the effects of the requirement dependencies (increase/decrease cost of) on the value of prioritization provided by the tensor concept. Since the strengths of dependencies are also influential factors in the act of prioritization, The …

State-Space Identification Of Switching Linear Discrete Time-Periodic Systems Withknown Scheduling Signals, İSMAİL UYANIK, HASAN HAMZAÇEBİ, MUSTAFA MERT ANKARALI 2019 TÜBİTAK

State-Space Identification Of Switching Linear Discrete Time-Periodic Systems Withknown Scheduling Signals, İsmai̇l Uyanik, Hasan Hamzaçebi̇, Mustafa Mert Ankarali

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, we propose a novel frequency domain state-space identification method for switching linear discrete time-periodic (LDTP) systems with known scheduling signals. The state-space identification problem of linear time-invariant (LTI) systems has been widely studied both in the time and frequency domains. Indeed, there have been several studies that also concentrated on state-space identification of both continuous and discrete linear time-periodic (LTP) systems. The focus in this study is the family of LDTP systems that switch among a finite set of subsystems triggered by known periodic scheduling signals. We address the state-space identification of such systems in frequency domain …

Between-Host Hiv Model: Stability Analysis And Solution Using Memeticcomputing, Musharif Ahmed, Ijaz Mansoor Qureshi, Muhammad Aamer Saleem, Muhammad Zubair, Saad Zafar

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

HIV poses a great threat to humanity for two major reasons. First it attacks the immunity system of the body and second, it is epidemic in nature. Mathematical models of HIV have been instrumental in understanding and controlling the infection. In this paper, we solve the between host epidemic model of HIV, described by nonlinear coupled differential equations, by using memetic computing. Under this model, the sexually active population is divided into four classes and we investigate the transfer of individuals from one class to another. The solution consists of Bernstein polynomials whose parameters have been optimized by using differential …

Cloud-Supported Machine Learning System For Context-Aware Adaptive M-Learning, Muhammad Adnan, Asad Habib, Jawad Ashraf, Shafaq Mussadiq

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

It is a knotty task to amicably identify the sporadically changing real-world context information of a learner during M-learning processes. Contextual information varies greatly during the learning process. Contextual information that affects the learner during a learning process includes background knowledge, learning time, learning location, and environmental situation. The computer programming skills of learners improve rapidly if they are encouraged to solve real-world programming problems. It is important to guide learners based on their contextual information in order to maximize their learning performance. In this paper, we proposed a cloud-supported machine learning system (CSMLS), which assists learners in learning practical …
