Strength And Durability Of Hybrid Fibre Reinforced Binary Blend Geopolymer Concrete, Namasivayam Ganesan, P V Indira, R Sahana
International Conference on Durability of Concrete Structures
This paper deals with an investigation on the influence of hybrid fibres on the strength and durability of binary blend geopolymer concrete. Geopolymer concrete was prepared using Fly ash and GGBS as source material and mix design was carried out as per the guidelines of Professor Rangan of Curtin University, Australia. Different fly ash-GGBS proportions namely 50-50%, 60-40%, 70-30%, 80-20% and 90-10% were considered. The tests on Geopolymer concrete reveal that the compressive strength increases as the percentage of GGBS increases up to 30%. Hence the combination of 70% fly ash and 30% GGBS was considered as a base material. …
Development Of Local And Global Corrosion Sensing Technique To Monitor Structural Behavior Of Prestressed Concrete Structures, 2019 Florida International University
Development Of Local And Global Corrosion Sensing Technique To Monitor Structural Behavior Of Prestressed Concrete Structures, Dewan Z. Hossain
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Corrosion of steel rebar in reinforced concrete structures is a concern for highway bridge owners. According to 2002 study by the Federal Highway Administration, ~15% of the highway bridges in the US are structurally deficient due to corrosion and have an estimated annual direct cost of $8.3 billion. Generally, in post-tensioned bridges, ducts filled with poor or incomplete grouting can allow the tendons to come into contact with water, leading to corrosion and fracture. Although new and improved procedures of grouting have been developed to reduce the instances of poor grouting, the problem of how to reliably inspect tendons on …
Corrosion Durability Of A Nano-Particle Enriched Zinc-Rich Coating System For Highway Steel Bridges, 2019 Saiada Fuadi Fancy
Corrosion Durability Of A Nano-Particle Enriched Zinc-Rich Coating System For Highway Steel Bridges, Saiada Fuadi Fancy
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Corrosion is a major concern for the long-term durability and structural integrity of steel components of highway bridges when unprotected. The application of protective coatings has been widely used for corrosion mitigation of atmospherically exposed structural steel. At present, the zinc-rich primer (ZRP) based three-coat system is widely used in the United States. The metallic zinc pigment ideally would provide corrosion resistance by sacrificial as well as barrier protection. The life of these coating systems is at best only half of the bridge design life. Furthermore, premature degradation may occur if there are flaws in the system due to improper …

Behavior Of Prestressed Concrete Bridges With Closure Pour Connections And Diaphragms, 2019 University of Massachusetts Amherst
Behavior Of Prestressed Concrete Bridges With Closure Pour Connections And Diaphragms, Gercelino Ramos
Masters Theses
Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) has gained substantial popularity in new bridge construction and bridge deck replacement because it offers innovative construction techniques that result in time and cost savings when compared to traditional bridge construction practice. One technology commonly implemented in ABC to effectively execute its projects is the use of prefabricated bridge components (precast/prestressed bridge components). Precast/prestressed bridge components are fabricated offsite or near the site and then connected on-site using small volume closure pour connections. Diaphragms are also commonly used to strengthen the connection between certain prefabricated components used in ABC, such as beam elements. Bridges containing closure …

Analysis Of Roofs Of Wooden Houses Under Uplift Wind Loads- Analytical Solution, Retrofit, And Reliability Analysis, Adnan Farouk Enajar
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Observations of post-hurricane events indicate that light-frame wood houses are vulnerable to failure
Observations of post-hurricane events indicate that light-frame wood houses are vulnerable to failure due to the inability of their connections to provide sufficient transfer of uplift wind loads from the roof of the house to the foundation. One of these connections is the roof-to-wall connection (RTWC), which connects roof trusses to the top plate members of the walls. This issue has been investigated through full-scale testing at the Insurance Research Lab for Better Homes. This thesis describes the detailed finite element modelling performed for this full-scale testing …

In-Plane Cyclic Shear Performance Of Pipe Stem Reinforced Cob Wall, Dezire Q'Anna Perez-Barbante
Master's Theses
This thesis investigates full-scale pipe stem reinforced cob walls under in-plane cyclic shear loads. Cob is the combination of clay subsoils, sand, straw and water that is built in lifts to produce monolithic walls. There is insufficient amount of information on cob as a building material in today’s age. The prior research that exists has examined varying straw content and type, water content, and mixture ratios to determine their effect on strength. There is currently one report that analyzes full-scale cob walls under in-plane loading. This thesis looks to iterate the full-scale tests and specifically studies the effect of reinforcement …

Improving The Sustainability Of The Built Environment By Training Its Workforce In More Efficient And Greener Ways Of Designing And Constructing Through The Horizon2020 Bimcert Project, Barry Mcauley, Avril Behan
Conference papers
The construction industry consumes up to 50% of mineral resources excavated from nature, generates about 33% of CO2 present in the atmosphere and is responsible for 40% of total global energy through both construction and operation of buildings. The realisation that current pervasive construction practices now face globalization, sustainability, and environmental concerns, as well as ever-changing legislation requirements and new skills needed for the information age has resulted in technologies such as Building Information Modelling (BIM) becoming a key enabler in navigating these barriers. To assist in overcoming these barriers, a number of funding initiatives have been put in place …

Centres Of Excellence And Roadmaps For Digital Transition: Lessons For Ireland’S Construction Industry, Barry Mcauley, Alan Hore, Roger West
Conference papers
Like most sectors in today’s working world, construction businesses are challenged to work in an increasingly digitised world with sophisticated demands from intelligent clients. So much has been written about the inefficiencies of the construction industry, its fragmentation, lack of collaboration, low margins, adversarial pricing, poor productivity, financial fragility, lack of research and development, poor industry image and relatively weak use of digital solutions. The Irish government recognises the importance of digital innovation to address many of the challenges the construction industry faces. With recent high profile reports of escalating spend on signature public sector projects and weak productivity performance …

As part of their Future of Construction initiative in 2018 the World Economic Forum published an action plan to accelerate Building Information Modelling adoption. The WEF report highlighted actions that companies, industry organisations and governments are advised to implement to accelerate BIM adoption and better capitalise on delivering better project outcomes. According the authors of the report BIM is seen as the centrepiece of the construction industry’s digital transformation, however they acknowledged that BIM adoption globally remain slow. Anecdotal experience would suggest that BIM usage in Ireland is also very low and that a similar initiative or an adaptation of …
Data To Risk-Informed Decisions Through Bridge Model Updating, 2019 Georgia Institute of Technology
Data To Risk-Informed Decisions Through Bridge Model Updating, Iris Tien
INSPIRE Archived Webinars
Across the country, bridge structures are aging with use commonly extending beyond their original design lives. Decisions to repair, retrofit or rehabilitate these structures will support continued reliability and resilience of these structures. To better understand the states of the bridges at any point in time, there are new technologies to inspect, monitor and assess bridge conditions.
To effectively use the results of these inspections and monitoring activities, we need an understanding of the relation between varying inspection parameters and the predicted performance of bridge structures.
In this seminar, we will describe methods to use inspection data to update assessment …
Experimental Calibration Of Centrally Loaded Built-Up Battened Compression Members, 2019 The British University in Egypt
Experimental Calibration Of Centrally Loaded Built-Up Battened Compression Members, Ghada El-Mahdy Ph.D., P.Eng.
Civil Engineering
There is a large diversity in the requirements for designing built-up compression members between international design codes. Most codes, including the North American standards and specifications specify the use of an equivalent or modified slenderness ratio. In general, all North American standards and specifications agree on the need of using a modified slenderness ratio, but differ in the factor used to multiply the local slenderness ratio. Theoretically it is difficult to estimate the exact value of this factor, and using experimental methods does not capture the exact value of this factor either. Hence, a different approach is needed to determine …

This study seeks to find the influence of replacing a portion of the asphalt–rubber binder with the bio-based material “guayule resin.” This replacement could be beneficial in terms of sustainability, economics, and environmental concerns related to the asphalt industry. Nine asphalt-rubber-guayule binders were investigated to find their rheological properties. Consecutively, the study proceeded with five selected binders being compared to the original asphalt (PG64-22). Investigations underwent whole matrices (crumb rubber modifier (CRM) residue included) and liquid phases (CRM residue extracted). Additionally, these properties were partially sought for their corresponding asphalt–rubber binders to compare and judge the contribution of the guayule …
Long-Term Deflections Of Reinforced Concrete Beams, 2019 The University of Western Ontario
Long-Term Deflections Of Reinforced Concrete Beams, Ziad Elaghoury
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
The CSA A23.3 code provisions compute the long-term deflection of reinforced concrete flexural members by applying a multiplier to the short-term deflection, essentially ignoring the creep and shrinkage characteristics of concrete. The CAC Concrete Design Handbook presents more elaborate methods, but fails to account for the factors that influence the creep and shrinkage of concrete.
The four widely recognized models for computing creep and shrinkage strains yield predictions that differ by up to 30%. Studies by others to assess the accuracy of the models apply different of statistical analyses do different datasets and so yield contradicting outcomes, making it difficult …
Development Of A Hybrid Thermoplastic Composite And Concrete Deck System, 2019 University of Maine
Development Of A Hybrid Thermoplastic Composite And Concrete Deck System, Benjamin T. Smith
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Reinforced concrete is a widely used structural system in conventional construction. It is used to create beams, columns, slabs, walls, bridge decks, dams, and many other structures. Concrete is a relatively inexpensive material that is much stronger in compression than in tension. This leads to the need to combine concrete with other materials to make an efficient hybrid structure. In conventional construction, steel reinforcing bars (rebar) are often used to carry the tension in the structure, as they are widely available and their design is well understood. There are some situations where rebar is not effective such as highly corrosive …
Effects Of Building Scale Parameters On Pressure Equalization Capacity Of Roof Paver Systems, 2019 The University of Western Ontario
Effects Of Building Scale Parameters On Pressure Equalization Capacity Of Roof Paver Systems, Matthew Sparks
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Roof pavers are commonly installed with a cavity beneath the paver that develops an internal suction pressure. These cavity pressures reduce the net pressure felt by a roof paver subject to uplift. Paver-scale parameter effects are well-understood, in this study, the effects of changing building-scale parameters such as height, aspect ratio, afterbody length, small and large scale roof obstructions, and paver to roof size ratio on cavity pressures are investigated. To do so pressure measurements were taken at the University of Western Ontario’s Boundary Layer Wind Tunnel Laboratory on a modular flat roof building model at four different heights with …
