Oceanside Angler's Club David Pine Memorial Weight Board, Tanner Joseph Pine

Construction Management

The David Pine Memorial Weight Board was constructed for the Oceanside Angler’s Club. I was contacted by this organization, to create a weigh board in founding member David Pine’s memory. The club had a previous weight board that was destroyed due to the harsh conditions of the coast. The process of building this board incorporated many of the facets taught in the Cal Poly curriculum. I had to work with the owners in order to create a suitable design, materials had to be acquired using alternative methods, subcontractors were worked with to create components of the board, and a schedule …

The Efficacy Of Orange Lane Delineations In Highway Work Zones, Neetu Kaur Sidhu 2022 California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo

The Efficacy Of Orange Lane Delineations In Highway Work Zones, Neetu Kaur Sidhu

Construction Management

With over 100,000 crashes in the work zone per year, it is essential that we as builders discover and implement innovative solutions to maximize field crew and public safety in high traffic areas. A recent trend in the Heavy Civil Construction industry has been the implementation of temporary fluorescent orange striping in active highway work zones. When traditional white or yellow lane markings are removed, a faint residue is left behind and as construction crews repeatedly shift lanes, multiple overlapping removal scars begin to create confusion for drivers that leads to an increased risk of crashes. To eliminate this confusion …

How To Manage Material Costing For Future Projects During Shortages And Inflationary Times, John Chauncy Langton 2022 California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo

How To Manage Material Costing For Future Projects During Shortages And Inflationary Times, John Chauncy Langton

Construction Management

No one knows precisely when a significant shortage or inflation of material will come. In the construction industry, the cost of materials changes daily. However, when Covid-19 arrived, the material price increased dramatically. Suppliers ran out of material, small companies couldn’t afford the material, and large companies had to compete with other larger companies more than ever. I had the opportunity to interview five well-informed construction owners and senior executives about their companies and what they did to survive unforeseen shortages and inflations in construction material. Inventory and pre-buying materials were vital in helping companies not have to pay a …

This research-based project analyzes issues within the Granite Heavy Civil Minor that contribute to declining student retention. This document specifically focuses on the program’s course curriculum and graduation date extensions as major drivers of student withdrawals from the minor. Two separate surveys were conducted from students within the minor and students who had dropped out of the minor, to gauge the specific issues students have with the program. The results concluded that many students dislike certain courses in the curriculum, such as CE 222 and CE 321, and felt that these required courses were unessential and unhelpful in preparing them …

Exploring Student Feedback In Order To Help Build An International Summer Program, Gillian Mcafee

Construction Management

Studying abroad presents students with the opportunity to acquire and develop a diverse range of employability and life skills. Exposure to diverse cultures introduces you to innovative ideas and ways of thinking that you might not have thought of otherwise. International travel is extremely beneficial to those working in the construction industry as they can study foreign business practices, architectural styles, and intercultural communication. While Cal Poly has had a successful summer study abroad program in the past, the faculty leaders are looking for student feedback to help better structure the program and in turn hopefully increase enrollment. Safely Covered Or Dangerously Exposed: Analyzing The Safety Vest Code Of Compliance, Sophie L. Stewart 2022 California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo

Safely Covered Or Dangerously Exposed: Analyzing The Safety Vest Code Of Compliance, Sophie L. Stewart

Construction Management

As the construction industry transitions to reflect a more diverse population, it is essential that personal protective equipment (PPE) accommodates this shift in demographics. In particular, the “One size fits all” approach is no longer an appropriate metric of fit for the safety vest. Previous student research reflected an overwhelming consensus that construction workers do not have vests which appropriately fit them. In response, the Cal Poly Construction Management Department hosted the first ever Verifying Everyone's Safety Together (VEST) Hackathon. This two-day event fostered a space for industry members, students, and faculty to discuss and develop several prototypes which better …

Water Efficiency In Residential Homes In San Luis Obispo County, Parker John Jacobs

Construction Management

Sustainable building has reshaped the construction industry and has led to new innovations that have benefitted the human race. Water efficiency in buildings has become increasingly important to the U.S. Green Building Counsel (USBGC) for buildings to obtain a LEED certification. To obtain a LEED certification buildings are rated on a point system in which the building is rewarded points by being environmentally responsible and using its resources efficiently. There are nine categories of LEED points with water efficiency being one of them. This has led the construction industry to innovate new technologies that help conserve one of if not …
