Design Of A Split Hopkinson Bar Apparatus For Use With Fiber Reinforced Composite Materials, Shawn Michael Lang 2012 Utah State University

Design Of A Split Hopkinson Bar Apparatus For Use With Fiber Reinforced Composite Materials, Shawn Michael Lang

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Tabulated material properties are the starting block for the design of most structures. Mechanical structures undergo a wide range of loading conditions. Structures can be loaded statically or dynamically with a wide range of strain rates. With impact loading or high strain rates the relationships between stress and strain are not the same as in static loading. It has been observed that material properties are dependent upon the rate at which they are tested. Many investigators have studied the effect of high compressive strain rate loading conditions, in metals. The most common method for determining the dynamic response of materials …

Simulating The Effects Of Outer-Mold-Line Modification On The University Of Tennessee Space Institute's Aviation Systems' Piper Navajo Research Aircraft, Jonathan Vincent Kolwyck

Masters Theses

Aircraft used as research platforms often have their Outer-Mold-Lines (OML) modified to accommodate instrumentation packages associated with the research being performed. The external modification will change the aerodynamics of the aircraft, thus altering how the aircraft flies. The resulting performance, stability, and control of the aircraft can be effectively determined, but pilot opinion of aircraft handling qualities are largely unknown. The objective of this project is to be able to simulate aircraft flight control systems in the UTSI simulator, thus enabling the evaluation of pilot opinion of handling qualities. The design and implementation of a control loading system is described, …

Numerical And Experimental Study Of Anisotropic Effective Thermal Conductivity Of Particle Beds Under Uniaxial Compression, Jingwen Mo 2012 Utah State University

Numerical And Experimental Study Of Anisotropic Effective Thermal Conductivity Of Particle Beds Under Uniaxial Compression, Jingwen Mo

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Planetary heat flow is of great interests to planetary scientists, which can be used to determine the history and current status of pianetary bodies. Thermal conductivities of planetary bodies are generally measured using long needle-like probes inserted into planet's surface, which measure the horizontal effective thermal conductivity (parallel to the planetary surface). The vertical effective thermal conductivity (perpendicular to the planetary surface), used for heat flow calculation, is assumed to be the same as the horizontal effective thermal conductivity. However, ETC of particle beds is known to be an anisotropic property under low compressive pressures.

The objective of this study …

Experimental Studies Of Vertical Mixing In An Open Channel Raceway For Algae Biofuel Production, Ram Sudheer Voleti

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The USU BioEnergy Center has been successful in developing algae feedstocks for renewable biofuels and bioproducts. The concept is to utilize and maximize algae feedstocks for liquid transportation fuels, biomass for burning and digestion, and high value co-products. It is theorized that increasing the mixing in open and closed algal production systems improves the productivity of the algae culture. A raceway cultivation system was chosen to examine the phenomena of mixing. Vertical mixing will provide more uniform exposure to sunlight for all of the algae in the raceway. The main focus of this research was to increase vertical mixing. Delta …

A Resistance Based Structural Health Monitoring System For Composite Structure Applications, Dennis N. Boettcher 2012 California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo

A Resistance Based Structural Health Monitoring System For Composite Structure Applications, Dennis N. Boettcher

Master's Theses

This research effort explored the possibility of using interwoven conductive and nonconductive fibers in a composite laminate for structural health monitoring (SHM). Traditional SHM systems utilize fiber optics, piezoelectrics, or detect defects by nondestructive test methods by use of sonar graphs or x-rays. However, these approaches are often expensive, time consuming and complicated.

The primary objective of this research was to apply a resistance based method of structural health monitoring to a composite structure to determine structural integrity and presence of defects.

The conductive properties of fiber such as carbon, copper, or constantan - a copper-nickel alloy - can be …

The Effect Of A Low-Velocity Impact On The Flexural Strength And Dynamic Response Of Composite Sandwiches With Damage Arrestment Devices, Kodi A. Rider 2012 California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo

The Effect Of A Low-Velocity Impact On The Flexural Strength And Dynamic Response Of Composite Sandwiches With Damage Arrestment Devices, Kodi A. Rider

Master's Theses

Impact strength is one of the most important structural properties for a designer to consider, but is often the most difficult to quantify or measure. A constant concern in the field of composites is the effect of foreign object impact damage because it is often undetectable by visual inspection. An impact can create interlaminar damage that often results in severe reductions in strength and instability of the structure. The main objective of this study is to determine the effectiveness of a damage arrestment device (DAD) on the mechanical behavior of composite sandwiches, following a low-velocity impact. A 7.56-lbf crosshead …

Control System Development For Small Uav Gimbal, Nicholas J. Brake 2012 California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo

Control System Development For Small Uav Gimbal, Nicholas J. Brake

Master's Theses

The design process of unmanned ISR systems has typically driven in the direction of increasing system mass to increase stabilization performance and imagery quality. However, through the use of new sensor and processor technology high performance stabilization feedback is being made available for control on new small and low mass stabilized platforms that can be placed on small UAVs. This project develops and implements a LOS stabilization controller design, typically seen on larger gimbals, onto a new small stabilized gimbal, the Tigereye, and demonstrates the application on several small UAV aircraft. The Tigereye gimbal is a new 2lb, 2-axis, gimbal …

An Experimental Investigation Of A Goldschmied Propulsor, Joshua Roepke 2012 California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo

An Experimental Investigation Of A Goldschmied Propulsor, Joshua Roepke

Master's Theses

A wind tunnel investigation of an axisymmetric bluff body, known as a Goldschmied propulsor, was completed. This model conceptually combines boundary layer control and boundary layer ingestion into a single complementary system that is intended to use energy to reduce the axial force on the body by eliminating separation and increasing the pressure recovery aft of the body’s maximum thickness. The goal of the current project was to design, fabricate, and fully document the performance of a wind tunnel model incorporating the Goldschmied propulsor concept and complete an examination of its aerodynamic performance. The investigation took place at California Polytechnic …

Ale-Vms And St-Vms Methods For Computer Modeling Of Wind-Turbine Rotor Aerodynamics And Fluid–Structure Interaction, Yuri Bazilevs, Ming-Chen Hsu, Kenji Takizawa, Tayfun E. Tezduyar

Ming-Chen Hsu

We provide an overview of the Arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian Variational Multiscale (ALE-VMS) and Space–Time Variational Multiscale (ST-VMS) methods we have developed for computer modeling of wind-turbine rotor aerodynamics and fluid–structure interaction (FSI). The related techniques described include weak enforcement of the essential boundary conditions, Kirchhoff–Love shell modeling of the rotor-blade structure, NURBS-based isogeometric analysis, and full FSI coupling. We present results from application of these methods to computer modeling of NREL 5MW and NREL Phase VI wind-turbine rotors at full scale, including comparison with experimental data.

Potential Significance Of Photoexcited No2 On Global Air Quality With The Nmmb/Bsc Chemical Transport Model, O. Jorba, D. Dabdub, Christopher S. Blaszczak-Boxe, C. Pérez, Z. Janjic, J. M. Baldasano, M. Spada, A. Badia, M. Gonçalves

Publications and Research

Atmospheric chemists have recently focused on the relevance of the NO2* + H2O → OH + HONO reaction to local air quality. This chemistry has been considered not relevant for the troposphere from known reaction rates until nowadays. New experiments suggested a rate constant of 1.7 × 10−13 cm3 molecule−1 s−1, which is an order of magnitude faster than the previously estimated upper limit of 1.2 × 10−14 cm3 molecule−1 s−1, determined by Crowley and Carl (1997). Using the new global model, NMMB/BSC Chemical Transport Model (NMMB/BSC-CTM), simulations are presented that assess the potential significance of this chemistry on global …

The Effects Of Familiarity And Persuasion On Risk Assessment, Casey L. Smith 2012 Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University - Daytona Beach

The Effects Of Familiarity And Persuasion On Risk Assessment, Casey L. Smith

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

Cognitive biases influence decisions and the analyses of risk. They are often derived from two separate processes: bias based on familiarity (familiarity bias) and bias as the result of influences from outside sources (persuasion bias). Research suggests that familiarity-based bias may lead to acceptance of an activity's drawbacks and a leniency of its risks.

In addition, research has tried to measure and analyze different types of biases individually, but few have compared the interactions of more than one bias at once. Because different biases may derive from different mental phenomena it is important to tease out the distinctions, and observe …

Hot-Wire Anemometer For The Boundary Layer Data System, William D. Neumeister 2012 California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo

Hot-Wire Anemometer For The Boundary Layer Data System, William D. Neumeister

Master's Theses

Hot-wire anemometry has been routinely employed for laboratory measurements of turbulence for decades. This thesis presents a hot-wire anemometer suitable for use with the Boundary Layer Data System (BLDS). BLDS provides a unique platform for in- flight measurements because of its small, self-contained, robust design and flexible architecture. Addition of a hot-wire anemometer would provide BLDS with a sensor that could directly measure flow velocity fluctuations caused by turbulence. Hot-wires are commonly operated in constant-temperature mode for high frequency response, but require a carefully tuned bridge. The constant-voltage anemometer (CVA) uses a simple op-amp circuit to improve frequency response over …

Response Surface Optimization Of Electron Beam Freeform Fabrication Depositions Using Design Of Experiments, Patricia A. Quigley

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

The Electron Beam Freeform Fabrication (EBF3 ) System is a material depositing, layer additive technique that produces three dimensional (3D) parts out of a wide range of metals in high vacuum, using an electron beam and wire feedstock. Screening deposition trials on a titanium alloy, Ti-6Al-4V, at the National Aeronautics Space Administration (NASA) revealed selective vaporization of the aluminum content of linear prototypes when subjected to chemical analysis. In this study, the aluminum content, bead height and bead width output responses were analyzed from a systematic study of the effects that the interactions of the EBF3 processing parameters …

Modeling, Identification, Validation And Control Of A Hybrid Maglev Ball System, Ahmed Elhussein E. Mekky 2012 Old Dominion University

Modeling, Identification, Validation And Control Of A Hybrid Maglev Ball System, Ahmed Elhussein E. Mekky

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

In this thesis, the electrodynamics of a single axis hybrid electromagnetic suspension Maglev system was modeled and validated by applying it to a single axis hybrid maglev ball experiment. By exploring its linearized model, it was shown that the single axis hybrid Maglev ball has inherently unstable dynamics. Three control scenarios were explored based on the linearized model; (1) Proportional, Deferential (PD) control, (2) Proportional, Deferential, Integral (PID) and (3) PID controller with pre-filtering. This thesis has shown that a PID controller with a pre-filtering technique can stabilize such a system and provide a well-controlled response.

A parametric system identification …

The Influence Of Non-Equilibrium Pressure On Rotating Flows, Irfan Rashid Zardadkhan 2012 Old Dominion University

The Influence Of Non-Equilibrium Pressure On Rotating Flows, Irfan Rashid Zardadkhan

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

This study was undertaken to investigate the influence of pressure relaxation on steady, incompressible flows with strong streamline curvature. In the early part of this dissertation research, the significance of non-equilibrium pressure forces in controlling the structure of a steady, two dimensional axial vortex was demonstrated. In order to extend the study of pressure relaxation influences on more complex rotating flows, this dissertation has examined other rotating flow features that can be associated with hurricanes, tornadoes and dust devils. To model these flows, modified boundary layer equations were developed for a fluid column rotating near a solid plane including the …

Measurement System Characterization In The Presence Of Measurement Errors, Sean A. Como 2012 Old Dominion University

Measurement System Characterization In The Presence Of Measurement Errors, Sean A. Como

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

In the calibration of a measurement system, data are collected in order to estimate a mathematical model between one or more factors of interest and a response. Ordinary least squares is a method employed to estimate the regression coefficients in the model. The method assumes that the factors are known without error; yet, it is implicitly known that the factors contain some uncertainty. In the literature, this uncertainty is known as measurement error. The measurement error affects both the estimates of the model coefficients and the prediction, or residual, errors. There are some methods, such as orthogonal least squares, that …

Extended Pcr Rules For Dynamic Frames, Florentin Smarandache, Jean Dezert 2012 University of New Mexico

Extended Pcr Rules For Dynamic Frames, Florentin Smarandache, Jean Dezert

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In most of classical fusion problems modeled from belief functions, the frame of discernment is considered as static. This means that the set of elements in the frame and the underlying integrity constraints of the frame are fixed forever and they do not change with time. In some applications, like in target tracking for example, the use of such invariant frame is not very appropriate because it can truly change with time. So it is necessary to adapt the Proportional Conflict Redistribution fusion rules (PCR5 and PCR6) for working with dynamical frames. In this paper, we propose an extension of …

Unsteady Specific Work And Isentropic Efficiency Of A Radial Turbine Driven By Pulsed Detonations, Kurt P. Rouser 2012 Air Force Institute of Technology

Unsteady Specific Work And Isentropic Efficiency Of A Radial Turbine Driven By Pulsed Detonations, Kurt P. Rouser

Theses and Dissertations

There has been longstanding government and industry interest in pressure-gain combustion for use in Brayton cycle based engines. Theoretically, pressure-gain combustion allows heat addition with reduced entropy loss. The pulsed detonation combustor (PDC) is a device that can provide such pressure-gain combustion and possibly replace typical steady deflagration combustors. The PDC is inherently unsteady, however, and comparisons with conventional steady deflagration combustors must be based upon time-integrated performance variables. In this study, the radial turbine of a Garrett automotive turbocharger was coupled directly to and driven, full admission, by a PDC in experiments fueled by hydrogen or ethylene. Data included …
