One of the myriad consequences of war is displacement and refugee-ism. People become refugees when they no longer feel safe in their country of origin. Before, during, and after the journey towards safety, refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) endure several challenging circumstances which stretch their normal abilities to cope. In their efforts to cope, these people report several mental health challenges like sleeplessness, hypervigilance, anxiety, and depression. The reported mental health challenges are normal in this population; however, when they persist, they result in posttraumatic stress disorder. Surprisingly, some also report obtaining psychological growth due to their challenging circumstances. …

Over the past decade, cyber-sexual assault (also known as "nonconsensual pornography" or "revenge porn") has gained the attention of legal experts, the media, and most recently, the counseling profession. Whereas this nonconsensual sharing of sexually explicit images online, through social medial, or other forms of technology has been demonstrated to have significant impacts on victims, researchers have focused heavily upon the legality of these actions (i.e. should there be consequences for posting nude/semi-nude photos of non-consenting adults to the internet), but there has been a lack of attention to the mental health consequences of cyber-sexual assault on victims. Journal entries from 23 masters students enrolled in a counseling theories course were analyzed using Critical Incident methodology to identify students’ self-disclosures and connection to counseling theories. Seven different patterns of connecting theoretical information to personal experiences emerged. The authors present a discussion of how the findings and resulting framework can contribute to the teaching of counseling theory and the reflective process of identifying theoretical orientation.

As international students make up an increasing body of students on U.S. college campuses, how to effectively assist their transition becomes an emerging task for staff in this educational setting. This intervention is designed to inform educational administrators as a protocol to help international students transition to U.S. college campuses. The intervention aims to target international students’ psychological adaptation by addressing social support and adaptive emotion regulation through increasing social self-efficacy, level of assertiveness and mindfulness. Youth violence continues to be considered a public health concern in the United States. This study utilized longitudinal data to test the possible mediating and moderating effects of school connectedness between school size and youth violence. The participants were obtained from Waves I and II of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health), a nationally representative ongoing survey of 7th through 12th grade students in the United States. A series of multilevel models using Hierarchical Linear Modeling (HLM6) procedures were compared. Using a participatory and collaborative approach, we developed, implemented, and evaluated a culturally responsive school counseling group, Boys II Men, for 11 low-income diverse male students of color at an urban public school. The content of the group focused on five areas: social connections and support, exploring gender roles, navigating identities, school engagement, and future planning. We worked closely with teachers, school staff, and counselors to foster a supportive and positive school climate (Beesley, 2004). Closing postsecondary opportunity gaps has become a national, state and local educational priority. To help eliminate these gaps, the US Department of Education initiated a project that provided real time student level Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) completion status to large urban school districts. Leveraging this information, school counselors identified and supported students and families as they navigated the financial aid process, resulting in statistically significant impacts on FAFSA completion and college attendance.

Effective preparation for graduate students pursuing work in the field of college student affairs most often includes both a formal classroom experience as well as a supervised practical experience, such as internships or graduate assistantships (Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education, 2012). This study evaluated a brief, bystander bullying intervention for elementary school students. Students in the intervention group reported an increase in knowledge and confidence to act as “defenders.” Students in the intervention group also reported an increase in self-esteem relative to the control group, although this finding was limited to sixth-grade students. The study found no group differences in sense of school belonging. This article discusses implications for school counselors.

This paper is written in the context of three Irish higher education institutions negotiating a merger in order to become Ireland’s inaugural ‘Technological University’. The present study compared outcome measurements on the Antisocial and Borderline scales of the Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI) with those on the Milion Clinical Multiaxial Inventory (MCMI-III) when both were used with a criminal justice population. Significant positive correlations were found between the Antisocial scales on the PAI and MCMI-III, as well as between the Borderline scales of both assessments, indicating that in an evaluation process it would be sufficient to use only one assessment. It is suggested that the MCMI-III is the better option to save costs and time while preserving the clinical accuracy of the testing protocol for …

Historically, there has been a lack of formalized substance abuse counseling models in outpatient counseling settings beyond the 12-step model of treatment that honor the therapeutic relationship. An Integrated Relational Model of Substance Abuse Outpatient Counseling is proposed based on the therapeutic relationship and counseling for solutions. Person-centered therapy, motivational interviewing, and solution-focused therapy are integrated into a proposed phased model to use in outpatient counseling. The structure and application of the model is described, including goals, objectives, and intervention tools for each phase of counseling that honors the power of the therapeutic relationship.

International students face a variety of challenges in their acculturation process. The acculturation process is a highly variable process that is influenced by the mediating and moderating effects of individual factors that exist prior to, or arise during, acculturation (Berry, 1997). Among the moderating personal factors existing prior to acculturation, adult attachment has received heightened attention as an important variable impacting the acculturation process and adaptation outcomes. Wang and Mallinckrodt (2006a) suggested that successful adaptation involves exploration of unfamiliar social situations that resemble the infants’ exploration of their physical surroundings.
