Fostering Critical Awareness Of The Role Media Play In Sexual Socialization, Mckinley Thomas

To help students understand how media inform sexual development, a group pedagogical method titled “Sexual Socialization and the Media” was developed for an undergraduate human sexuality course. Groups selected and analyze various forms of media. Reflections were provided on scripting, skills, symbolism, stereotypes, and messaging conflicts. Results from 35 students indicate a high level of efficacy with 94.3% recommending the assignment be used in future classes. Over the years, practitioner research has been both marginalized and trivialized within the larger educational research landscape. This article challenges that exclusion by tracing the emergence and development of the inquiry stance construct. Understanding the origins of teacher inquiry can contribute to its cultivation and ultimately lend a necessary rigor—or better yet, vigor—to practitioner research. Even with extensive literacy research, routines, and policy modifications, many elementary students are not provided with the needed tools to develop independent literacy skills. Therefore, the purpose of this qualitative case study was to examine what independent literacy behaviors are developing in first through fourth grade students to determine whether the Daily 5 framework is developing the desired independent literacy skills in those students. A cost rarely considered in the study of war is its impact on education.  Government budgets shift funding from schools to armies.  Parents and teachers go off to war or modify their own activities to support the cause.  Older students prepare to fight while younger ones are evacuated or kept safe at home.  Educational experiences are certainly different for students in war-torn countries than for those in countries far from battle.  Nevertheless, war impacts education in a number of ways, and there are many examples of how World War II certainly did this.

This article examines how a group of elementary and secondary preservice teachers engaged in understanding “culture” and culturally responsive teaching while enrolled in an early program course. We analyze how culturally-related experiences, emotions, and perspectives contribute to the overall understanding of cultural competency training in teacher education. Preservice teachers varied in their use of individual- and structural-orientations, in isolation and in combination, as they developed and progressed as socially just teachers. Journal of Curriculum, Teaching, Learning and Leadership in Education

Social justice in early childhood has generally been conceptualized to include the anti-bias curriculum, and to a lesser extent, anti-racist education. Over the years, however, scholars have highlighted the many areas in which anti-bias education falls short both pedagogically and conceptually. In keeping with such discussion, this paper highlights significant gaps of anti-bias education by engaging central premises of anti-racist education. By centering a critical race and anti-racist perspective, the paper further provides practical suggestions on how to align early childhood classroom practices with anti-racist principles.

As a practical exercise, it bridges knowledge workers (e.g., educators, action researchers and other engaged scholars) with activists to explore the situated emancipation possibilities of radical agency at the intersection of blindness and Latinidad.
