More Than Just A Good Book: Employing U.S. Department Of Education Guidelines To Teach Character Education Using Literature, Suzy Besson-Martilotta
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this research study, which was conducted as a qualitative content analysis, was to discover to what extent children's literature from a popular anthology could be used to teach the tenets of character education according to U.S. Department of Education (2005) guidelines in a pre-Kindergarten through second grade setting. A team of participant-coders, which consisted of experienced early childhood educators, evaluated and analyzed each of the 44 complete books contained in the 320 page anthology, The 20th Century Children's Book Treasury: Celebrated Picture Books and Stories to Read Aloud (Schulman, 2005), in order to investigate opportunities to explore …

Writing For The Future, Justin Grover
McNair Scholars Research Journal
The purpose of this study is to ask whether graduate students who have finished their undergraduate study at Boise State University (BSU) feel they were adequately prepared to meet research writing challenges at the graduate level. Professors have also raised questions about the level of preparedness incoming graduate students should have. With BSU set to implement a new approach to learning writing across the curriculum, this study may aid in defining at-risk areas in research writing, identified by both graduate students and faculty. Surveys were given to graduate students who had completed their undergraduate degree at BSU as well as …

Examining The Relationship Between Information Obtained At Kindergarten Registration And Reading Comprehension Six Years Later, 2013 Liberty University
Examining The Relationship Between Information Obtained At Kindergarten Registration And Reading Comprehension Six Years Later, Paige Swartz
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this correlational study was to determine if variables known upon a group of students' enrollment in kindergarten had a significant relationship with their high-stakes reading assessment results obtained six years later, in the students' fifth grade year. Archival data was gathered from a rural northern Georgia school district. After a correlation matrix was constructed to examine the relationships among all variables of interest, bivariate linear regressions were used to determine whether the predictor variables explained any variance in the results of the fifth grade high-stakes reading assessment. Results indicated that one of the four predictor variables (vocabulary) …

Concerned about the rising rates of obesity and increasing health care costs in Japan, the government passed a law that requires local governments and companies to measure the waistlines of Japanese residents between the ages of 40 and 74 (56 million waistlines, 44% of the population of Japan). Those exceeding the government limits (Established by the Japanese International Diabetes Foundation), 33.5 inches for men and 35.4 inches for women, will be given diet and exercise advice. If, after three months of intervention residents fail to lose weight, they will be steered toward further re-education programs. Local governments and companies who …

SURGE
I have been privileged during my lifetime to always have the opportunity to learn about something if I wanted to. When I became interested in music and psychology—or even when I was learning how to apply for college—I googled it. The resources to obtain information have always been there for me: access to computers, the internet, books, journals. It is hard to imagine my life without a computer or access to books to learn about the world, and even harder to imagine if I did not know how to read or write. For this, I can thank my education and …

Change One Thing, Change Everything: Understanding The Rhetorical Triangle, 2013 Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy
Change One Thing, Change Everything: Understanding The Rhetorical Triangle, Tracy A. Townsend
Rhetoric Unit
This lesson exposes students to the most fundamental rhetorical concept, that of the “rhetorical triangle,” a device for understanding and articulating audience awareness in persuasion. Provided here are suggestions for a brief and engaging mini-lecture, followed by an exercise using two classic pieces of American rhetoric, speeches by the suffragettes Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony. Students will be challenged to learn the principles of the rhetorical triangle, close-read a text for rhetorical clues and cues, and make sound judgments about the speaker’s rhetorical process based on evidence. This lesson and activity are suitable for students in grades 9-12, …
