White Boy Wasted: Compensatory Masculinities In Fraternity Alcohol Use, Pietro Sasso

Journal of Sorority and Fraternity Life Research and Practice

Alcohol misuse by members of collegiate fraternal organizations has been cited as a significant issue (Wall, 2008). Current research indicates that specifically fraternities consume the most alcohol of any traditional undergraduate student cohort by frequency and volume. However, the current research literature does not discuss how alcohol is used by fraternity members. This study seeks to understand how alcohol is misused through understanding the personal narratives of fraternity members utilizing qualitative inquiry triangulated through interviews and observation. With over 60 collective years of serving the fraternal movement as fraternity/sorority members, chapter advisors, fraternity/sorority life advisors, and (inter)national fraternal leaders, we approached writing about the experiences of college students who participate in fraternities and sororities from an affirming and positive perspective. We believe these distinctive and intergenerational organizations can provide a forum for college students to create meaningful, well-rounded, and learning-oriented experiences. The Fall Enrollment component collects student enrollment counts by level of student, enrollment status, gender and race/ethnicity. In addition, first-time student retention rates and the student-to-faculty ratio are collected. Every other year data on residence of first-time undergraduates is required and in opposite years, enrollment by student age is required to be reported.

The New Student Wellness Survey (NSWS) was first implemented in Fall 2013 based on the University’s focus on student wellness and Dr. Shipp’s philosophy of being “intentionally intrusive” to improve student wellbeing and experience at UNO. The survey initially consisted of 22 questions that covered the 8 areas of wellness, program completion information, and supplemental information. After the first year, we re-evaluated the survey, and expanded it to 35 possible questions and made many of the new questions dynamic or open text fields.

The Survey: The New Student Wellness Survey (NSWS) is a 35 question survey completed by new incoming students as part of the Orientation sign up process. The questionnaire captures student perceptions on the 8areas of wellness: Emotional, Financial, Intellectual, Occupational, Physical, Social, Spiritual and Environmental,as well as supplemental information. The NSWS was first implemented in the fall semester of 2013, and 2015 is the third consecutive year that this project has been worked on. Results from this year are consistent with previous findings.
