Caroline Dunlap, a senior from Little Rock, Ark., won Ouachita Baptist University’s recent Virginia Queen Piano Competition.
A piano performance major and student of Dr. Adam Haas, visiting assistant professor of music, Dunlap earned $500 for her winning performances of “Prelude in D major, Op. 23 No. 4” by Sergei Rachmaninoff and “Sonatine, Animé” by Maurice Ravel.
“The Rachmaninoff ‘Prelude in D major’ was, by far, my favorite piece this semester, and I was excited to be able to share it with people during the competition,” said Dunlap, who averaged three to six hours of practice a day throughout most …

Academic motivation is an important topic that has been discussed in hopes to increase the levels within students, especially during college. Many factors can influence academic motivation, including the student's perceived parenting style and socioeconomic status. The purpose of this study was to examine the correlation between undergraduate student's academic motivation and perceived parenting style as well as the relationship between academic motivation and socioeconomic status of the student. An anonymous survey was given to undergraduate students through Rowan University's SONA system. Bivariate correlational tests, one-way ANOVA tests, and Post-Hoc tests in SPSS were used to determine if the relationships …
Always Loved But Never Entitled: Professor Intentions To Promote Leadership In Women, 2017 Minot State University
Always Loved But Never Entitled: Professor Intentions To Promote Leadership In Women, Daniel R. Conn, Roslyn J.F. Billy
The Qualitative Report
This article focuses on three professors from Midwestern University and how their intentions to encourage women to see themselves as leaders play out in their respective classrooms. Through educational connoisseurship and criticism we describe and interpret the ecological impacts of professor intentions in promoting women as leaders. To this end, we find the professors realize these intentions by the way in which they care for their students. In caring for their students, the professors take an “always loved by never entitled” approach, where they balance building a sense of support and confidence among their students with an understanding that leaders …

Beyond Socioeconomic Status: The Impact Of Principal Leadership In Urban And High Poverty Turnaround Schools, Mojisola Adejumo
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
The quest to transform failing urban and high-poverty schools in America has been a slippery uphill battle since the banner of war was raised against the many schools serving impoverished children. As battle rages, a few are schools leading their students, teachers, parents, and community to victory by turning their once-failing schools into institutions of academic excellence. However, the shouts of victory and strategic planning that led to their success have been overlooked or relegated to mere happenstance. As these successful schools claim unchartered territories of success, a quick glance at the battlefield reveals the reality that the battle is …

Meeting Your Class At The Crossroads: Using Slo/Frame Grids To Tailor Information Literacy Instruction, 2017 Linfield College
Meeting Your Class At The Crossroads: Using Slo/Frame Grids To Tailor Information Literacy Instruction, Patrick Wohlmut
Faculty & Staff Presentations
One of the practical challenges presented by ACRL’s Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education is how to use it to design and assess instruction. By its nature, the framework is less prescriptive and more descriptive; it is more focused on understandings, habits, and general behaviors than on specific skills and practices, which makes it harder to pin down for purposes of instructional design. This workshop introduced a tool for teaching librarians that arose out of the Linfield College Libraries’ efforts to update the student learning outcomes for its information literacy program: The SLO-Frame Grid. Though the tool was still …

Cooperating Teachers' Experiences Mentoring Preservice Teachers, 2017 UNM
Cooperating Teachers' Experiences Mentoring Preservice Teachers, David H. Lewis
Special Education ETDs
Abstract
Recent literature was reviewed to locate articles with perspectives and attitudes of cooperating teachers who work with preservice teachers at school sites in coordination with institutions that have teacher preparation programs in general and/or special education. The results showed an emphasis in reporting the external aspects of being a cooperating teacher such as the daily activities, and little was reported about the internal aspects of being a cooperating teacher such as personal experience and rationale for working a preservice teacher into a classroom. This led to the research question “What do cooperating teachers report as their experiences while mentoring …
The Relationship Of Locus Of Control And Social Learning On Academic Achievement In A Supplemental Instruction Program, 2017 Abilene Christian University
The Relationship Of Locus Of Control And Social Learning On Academic Achievement In A Supplemental Instruction Program, Tina Fleet
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
ABSTRACT
A large number of high school students entering college are arriving academically unprepared. Abilene Christian University’s newly founded Bridge Scholars Program seeks to help and support academically at-risk students based upon low ACT/SAT scores and low high school GPA averages. This research utilizes the Supplemental Instruction program, (based upon Bandura’s social learning theory), as its academic intervention. The research questions are 1) How does Supplemental Instruction contribute to an at-risk student’s college readiness (knowledge, skills, attitudes, behaviors and strategies)? And, 2) Does a student’s internal or external locus of control predict academic performance? A pretest and posttest using Rotter’s …
Exploring Postsecondary Market And Discipline Influences On Faculty Role Performance, 2017 Seton Hall University
Exploring Postsecondary Market And Discipline Influences On Faculty Role Performance, Wendiann R. Sethi
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Prior research has shown that the type of institution, disciplines, and characteristics of the faculty influence the structure and character of academic work. Zemsky and Shaman (1997) and others have suggested that differentiation among institutions, which has historically been structured along level of degree offerings and size/complexity, is now becoming increasingly structured along the lines of market segments – with many non-selective four-year institutions increasingly resembling two-year “convenience” institutions in terms of their academic organization. The purpose of this study was to test the extent to which academic work is increasingly organized by institutional market segment rather than traditional categories …
Resiliency: The Implementation Of A Strategic Framework, 2017 Western University
Resiliency: The Implementation Of A Strategic Framework, Michael L. Allegretti
The Dissertation-in-Practice at Western University
As the incidences and complexity of student mental health continue to rise, there is an emphasis on the need to review the first year experience to ensure that students are prepared for the challenges they will face in post-secondary education. Institutions attempt to address the concern of student mental health by increasing the scope and number of student supports, both formal and informal, in the context of decreasing budgets and increasing student expectations. Despite institutional efforts, students continue to report confusion about available services and an increased desire for specialized supports.
This OIP uses various leadership approaches and methods of …

As a former superintendent of schools for Fairfield, Conn., I have personal insight into how valuable it is to have nationally renowned universities as part of our community. Through this proximity, and based on long-established relationships, I saw students from area colleges teaching and interning in our public schools, and even had the opportunity to hire some of them into full-time assignments. The strategic and creative support they provided for the children and teachers in our classrooms and their contributions to the district was invaluable then, and remains so today.
Discourses Of Developmental English Education: Reframing Policy Debates, 2017 University of Maine
Discourses Of Developmental English Education: Reframing Policy Debates, Aaron R. Tolbert
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
According to the National Educational Longitudinal Study, an estimated 28% of academically underprepared students who take developmental courses (preparatory, not credit-bearing) graduate within 8.5 years (Attewell, Lavin, Domina, & Levey, 2006), far below the national average graduation rate of near 60% of students for all postsecondary institutions (USDE, 2016). Given these statistics, some conclude that developmental education itself contributes to the low graduation rate of developmental students (Bailey, Jaggars, & Jenkins, 2015). Indeed, the causes of this attainment gap are the focus of vigorous debates by scholars from numerous disciplines, defining whether the problems exist within the organizational structure and …
Attitudes Toward Accommodations And Academic Well-Being Of College Students With Disabilities, 2017 Rowan University
Attitudes Toward Accommodations And Academic Well-Being Of College Students With Disabilities, Alex Elizabeth Troccoli
Theses and Dissertations
College students with disabilities remain an understudied population, especially on topics relating to academic success. As more students with disabilities are struggling to complete their college education it calls for more research to be done to ensure students are taking advantage of any resources that can be beneficial for them. This study can contribute to empirical literature about how accommodations and other support service for college students with disabilities can impact academic well-being. The research questions advanced in the study are: 1) Is there a difference in the attitudes of students who are availing and not availing to accommodations? and …
