Rape Culture.Docx, Lynell Hodge 2019 University of Central Florida

Rape Culture.Docx, Lynell Hodge

Lynell Hodge, EdD

Rape culture is a highly contested topic often framed by sexual assault as a central focus. As result, when feminists and social justice activists attempt to have a more expansive conversation to include coercive relationships or street harassment it isn’t always received well. In some cases the conversation is labeled as divisive. Having a rape culture discussion can be already contentious, there is also a subgroup of women who lean anti-rape culture rhetoric. Rape culture requires an understanding of the normalization of violence due to the pervasiveness of sexism. As a result, exploring why women deny rape culture’s ...

Utilizing The Mentor Badging System In Selectedworks To Facilitate The Faculty-Student Connection, Debra Rodensky, Kadie Mullins

Digital Commons Southeastern User Group (DC SEUG) 2019

Identifying available faculty research mentors with the right background has been a challenge for student researchers and the teams that support them for many years. To address this challenge, the Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR) teamed up with the Scholarly Communications Team to introduce ‘Mentor Badging,’ creating a one-stop, searchable database of available mentors. Using a SelectedWorks Mentor Badge gives the OUR team, fellow faculty, and student researchers the opportunity to track available faculty mentors and the nature of the faculty research projects. In addition to providing a database, the ‘Mentor Badging’ program allows a direct email to be sent ...

Big History And Sustainability, Duncan Blake Ross 2019 Dominican University of California

Big History And Sustainability, Duncan Blake Ross

Master of Arts in Humanities

The purpose of this paper is to provide a critical examination of Big History at Dominican and offer some retrospective suggestions for any possible future first year experience programs.

I reflect on Big History texts, critical papers and books as well as my own experiences and interviews with others. My research and reflections suggest that big history pedagogy failed to convey sufficient meaning and purpose to students. The actual value of the big history pedagogy was compromised by confusing and unnecessary elements of the main text. I conclude that big history pedagogy should culminate in sustainability studies. It is there ...
