An Examination Of Teacher Concerns Beyond The Initial Stages Of A District's One-To-One Technology Adoption, Elicia Ramsey Massengill

Education Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this study was to examine the change process teachers experience during a technology adoption in an effort to understand how effective technology implementation comes about, what obstacles must be navigated, and what resources are needed for that navigation. The convergent parallel mixed-methods design used in this study provides both qualitative and quantitative data analyzed separately in a side-by-side comparison and then merged to develop a fuller understanding of high school teachers’ implementation of a one-to-one technology adoption 5 years after its inception in a rural North Carolina district. A purposive, stratified sample of 30 teachers, representing a …

Teaching Public Speaking Online–Not A Problem But An Opportunity!, Sherwyn Morreale, Janice Thorpe, Susan Ward 2019 University of Colorado Colorado Springs

Teaching Public Speaking Online–Not A Problem But An Opportunity!, Sherwyn Morreale, Janice Thorpe, Susan Ward

Journal of Communication Pedagogy

This reflection essay focuses on the problems inherent in the design and development of an online public speaking course, which in part result from presuming the course must mirror its face-to-face counterpart. Based on our own experiences and background in designing an online public speaking course, we recommend that instructors and administrators of this course solve such problems by employing design strategies that effectively adapt the course content and pedagogy to a digital context. The essay begins with a description of an integrated course design model (Fink, 2005) that proved useful to us for accomplishing this task. Then we discuss …

Developing A Digital Voice: Embedding Digital Communication Platforms, Networks, And Technologies In The 21st-Century Classroom, James M. Proszek

Journal of Communication Pedagogy

Introductory communication courses are an invaluable resource for improving students’ abilities to speak confidently, passionately, and persuasively, while also inspiring them to become more engaged citizens. However, digital media present new opportunities and challenges for designing courses that are relevant to students’ personal and professional interests and goals. Instructors who incorporate digital communication platforms, networks, and technologies into their classrooms can better prepare students to meet the complex demands of the technologically-mediated 21st century. In this essay, I offer 10 best practices for developing students’ digital media literacies within multiple communication contexts.

Administrator Perceptions Of Their Preparedness To Lead Digital Learning Initiatives Through Observing, Modeling, And Providing Feedback For The Effective Utilization Of Technology In A Digitally Rich Environment, Kristin L. Edwards 2019 Gardner-Webb University

Administrator Perceptions Of Their Preparedness To Lead Digital Learning Initiatives Through Observing, Modeling, And Providing Feedback For The Effective Utilization Of Technology In A Digitally Rich Environment, Kristin L. Edwards

Education Dissertations and Projects

With the rapid increase in device usage in classrooms, it is imperative that administrators know and understand pedagogical principles within digitally rich environments. This qualitative study sought to understand administrator preparedness for leading digital learning initiatives in the areas of observing, modeling, and offering constructive feedback in digitally rich environments. The Principals Technology Leadership Assessment (PTLA) and focus groups were used to conduct the research. A chi-square goodness of fit was used to compare the responses of the PTLA to the original PTLA study. Focus group results were analyzed for emerging themes. Gaps were identified as indicated by the ISTE-A …

A survey was used to collect data, and the survey consisted of two sections. The first section asked participants for demographic information, and the second section included Likert items pertaining to students’ attitudes toward using mobile applications to learn …

In And Out Of School Literacies: Adolescents Negotiating And Navigating Identities Through Social Media, Brooke Elizabeth Simon

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Through the theoretical lens of connected learning and a pedagogy of multiliteracies, this

embedded case study provides an intimate portrait of two adolescents (ages 14-15), Rehema and

Luis. The focus of the study is their uses of social media both in and out of the classroom, their

purposes, practices, and perspectives surrounding this use, and the tensions that exist between

building and maintaining their identities within social networking sites (SNS) and the crossover

of their teachers and school utilizing these same SNS for learning purposes. The findings reveal

that for these particular focal participants, the use of SNS, both in …

Instructional Designers As Project Managers: A Phenomenology, La Keshia Lynn Nall 2019 Nova Southeastern University

Instructional Designers As Project Managers: A Phenomenology, La Keshia Lynn Nall

CCE Theses and Dissertations

The ability to effectively manage learning design projects, consult with stakeholders (such as sponsors, subject matter experts, and learners), and direct projects to completion is a vital part of an instructional designer’s role. Although the need for project management education and experience is reiterated in the literature and in cross-industry instructional designer (ID) job postings, it was unclear how these professionals acquired and used project management skills and tools in their profession because project management is not a focus in many higher education programs intended to prepare instructional designers.

The goal of this phenomenological study was to understand the lived …

An Instructional Designer Competency Framework For Complex Learning Designs, David Alan Schubert

CCE Theses and Dissertations

Learning design competency frameworks published by professional organizations, exist for typical instructional design efforts. However, a review of literature revealed a lack of frameworks available for the creation of complex learning designs (CLDs). The goal of this research was to develop a competency framework for the creation of CLDs. Quantitative and qualitative methods were employed in the four phases of the design and development research approach In phase one, a survey based on the Educational Technology Multimedia Competency Survey (ETMCS) was sent to instructional designers who self-reported as having experience creating CLDs. The purpose of phase one was to identify …

A Framework For Digital Wisdom In Higher Education, Michael Paulus

SPU Works

Institutions of higher education have a crucial role and responsibility at this moment of technological change to form people who will flourish in our so-called digital age. The speed with which digital information and communication technologies have permeated our lives has left little time for critical reflection on how we may intentionally integrate them into our lives. Regardless of when we were born or the depth of our technological expertise, we are all of us digitally naïve. Individually and collectively, we are still learning how to use new and emerging digital technologies well and wisely. This essay presents a framework …

Experiencing Poverty In An Online Simulation: Effects On Players’ Beliefs, Attitudes And Behaviors About Poverty, Pedro Hernandez-Ramos, Christine M. Bachen, Chad Raphael, John Ifcher, Michael Broghammer 2019 Santa Clara University

Experiencing Poverty In An Online Simulation: Effects On Players’ Beliefs, Attitudes And Behaviors About Poverty, Pedro Hernandez-Ramos, Christine M. Bachen, Chad Raphael, John Ifcher, Michael Broghammer

Teacher Education

Digital simulations are increasingly used to educate about the causes and effects of poverty, and inspire action to alleviate it. Drawing on research about attributions of poverty, subjective well-being, and relative income, this experimental study assesses the effects of an online poverty simulation (entitled Spent) on participants’ beliefs, attitudes, and actions. Results show that, compared with a control group, Spent players donated marginally more money to a charity serving the poor and expressed higher support for policies benefitting the poor, but were less likely to take immediate political action by signing an online petition to support a higher minimum wage. …
