When Joan Digby first proposed taking collegiate honors students into our national parks, I jumped at the chance. Within minutes of reading her email, I not only responded with an enthusiastic “Yes!” but went so far as to volunteer the resources of the Southern Utah University Honors Program to get things started. Nestled among 5 national parks in southwestern Utah, I felt our campus would be a natural focal point for the kind of program Joan envisioned. Within weeks we had laid the groundwork for a proof-of-concept pilot project at nearby Bryce Canyon National Park. Little did I know at …

This will give students the theoretical and conceptual foundations they will need to grasp more complex and formulaic ideas in the unit. It will also promote meaningful learning as it will show students how mathematics is relevant to their everyday lives. Through this lessons tudents will be …

Curriculum & Instruction Faculty Publications
This study descriptively compares international social contexts for teacher workplace informal professional learning from the teachers’ perspectives. Set in elementary schools in the U.S. and Lithuania, the study illustrates how teachers make sense of and engage in learning within the historical, political and administrative contexts within which they work. A sociocultural framework brings into view different opportunities for teacher informal learning. These appear in teachers’ discourse about their schools’ missions, building structures, classroom environments, organizational arrangements, traditions, and professional relationships as referenced in teachers’ discourse. The study argues for the importance of acknowledging teacher informal learning as a method of …

Providing an overview of Brazilian Education is a task that could take volumes to present. Moreover, to do this in a comprehensive way would involve many Brazilians that have been involved with the Brazilian Educational System for many years. There are many facets that would be included in this country's rich history and present manifestation of education and learning. Nonetheless, as a visitor from the United States of America who has been privileged to visit Brazil eight times and conduct various lifelong learning education al programs there, I will attempt in this paper to offer some of my observations about …

The most cogently knowledgeable and articulate of all scholars that have researched and practiced in andragogy in Savicevic (2006a).
