Eighteen Blind Library Users’ Experiences With Library Websites And Search Tools In U.S. Academic Libraries: A Qualitative Study, Adina Mulliken

Publications and Research

Telephone interviews were conducted with 18 blind academic library users around the U.S. about their experiences using their library and its website. The study uses the perspective that blind users’ insights are fundamental. A common theme was that navigating a webpage is time consuming on the first visit. Issues identified include the need for “databases” to be defined on the homepage, accessibly coded search boxes, logical heading structure, and several problems to be resolved on result pages. Variations in needs depending on users’ screen reader expertise were also raised. Suggestions for libraries to address these issues are offered.

The Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision

This qualitative study explores the practicum and/or internship experiences of international students in counseling. Based on the foundation of phenomenological research, this study uses a consensual qualitative research method. Semi-structured interview questionnaires asked ten participants regarding their experiences of practica and/or internships (including their fears, challenges, and support from training programs). Results revealed that the fears and challenges that international students face during the practicum and/or internship training primarily stemmed from their language barrier and/or a lack of understanding of the American counseling system. Our findings indicated that providing practical information, such as sites, the American ...

Design For Success: Identifying A Process For Transitioning To An Intensive Online Course Delivery Model In Health Professions Education., Paige L Mcdonald, Kenneth J Harwood, Joan T Butler, Karen S Schlumpf, Carson W Eschmann, Daniela Drago

Clinical Research and Leadership Faculty Publications

Intensive courses (ICs), or accelerated courses, are gaining popularity in medical and health professions education, particularly as programs adopt e-learning models to negotiate challenges of flexibility, space, cost, and time. In 2014, the Department of Clinical Research and Leadership (CRL) at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences began the process of transitioning two online 15-week graduate programs to an IC model. Within a year, a third program also transitioned to this model. A literature review yielded little guidance on the process of transitioning from 15-week, traditional models of delivery to IC models, particularly in online learning ...

Each year, over 2,000 student registered nurse anesthetists (SRNAs) graduate and continue as licensed CRNAs. Cultural competence is described as possessing characteristics of congruent attitudes, awareness, and conduct that provides and enables effective skills in cross-cultural encounters. Encompassing cultural competency education early in the SRNAs profession may provide valuable lifelong cultural skills that will ...

Supporting Student Connectedness And Social Satisfaction During Recess, Elizabeth Teasdale Wells 2018 Dominican University of California

Supporting Student Connectedness And Social Satisfaction During Recess, Elizabeth Teasdale Wells

Master's Theses and Capstone Projects

This project examines the effects of how recess preparation and reflection can be focused on providing students an opportunity to connect socially and strengthen overall happiness. By investigating the role social satisfaction plays in a child’s life during recess, educators may gain knowledge about how to foster social connectedness for every child. While most studies about recess focus on a child’s level of physical activity or negative behaviors, researchers have yet to investigate recess as a place to improve a child’s well-being and social satisfaction. This study was conducted at a public elementary school through qualitative interviews ...

Journal Of Qualitative Research In Sports Studies Issn 1754-2375 Overview: Guide To Contents, Editorials And Themes By Volume, Clive Palmer

Clive Palmer

The Journal of Qualitative Research in Sports Studies presents a valuable opportunity for students; undergraduates and postgraduates alike to write mentored publications of their research activities within the sport’s world. The papers are externally reviewed by academics from institutions (UK and overseas) who have an interest in researching sport and physical education. They also share a similar vision for raising confidence in students’ writing and encouraging greater involvement with researching sport from a qualitative standpoint. Towards these ends the journal has three core aims which the Editorial Board hope the reader will recognise as being educationally valuable in terms ...

Changes In Cultural Capital For Native English And Native Spanish-Speaking Families' Children Who Do And Do Not Participate In An Elementary Spanish Dual Immersion Program, Allen Smithee

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study is framed in Bourdieu’s theory of capital, which asserts that the choices we make are usually designed to help us become better off economically; that economic capital is, to some degree, exchangeable with other types of capital (e.g., social and cultural); and that other types of capital can be exchanged for economic capital. The purpose of this study was to understand which forms of capital native English-speaking and native Spanish-speaking families believed they would acquire by choosing to participate in or not participate in Spanish dual language immersion.

In this study I interviewed four native Spanish-speaking ...

Unfortunately the pitfalls to this rush to meet online demand results in what some researchers assert are inadequate quality content and curriculum. Others indicate there are not significant differences in the outcomes from online learning compared ...

A Study Of The Purpose And Value Of Recess In Elementary Schools As Perceived By Teachers And Administrators, Vickie Beard 2018 East Tennessee State University

A Study Of The Purpose And Value Of Recess In Elementary Schools As Perceived By Teachers And Administrators, Vickie Beard

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Children spend at least seven and a half hours or 46.9% of their waking hours in the school setting, which brings a unique responsibility to schools (Beighle, Erwin, Morgan, & Alderman, 2012). School systems are expected to educate children according to adopted state standards and encourage a healthy, active lifestyle. The concept then is to increase knowledge by putting focus on academic achievement as well as promoting good citizenship by developing children’s social, emotional, and physical development, which happens during recess. Yet, recess and free play opportunities are on the decline in school systems across our nation. This reduction ...
