The Effects Of Culture And Structure On Strategic Flexibility During Business Model Innovation, Adam J. BOCK, Tore OPSAHL, Gerard GEORGE, David M. GANN 2012 University of Edinburgh

The Effects Of Culture And Structure On Strategic Flexibility During Business Model Innovation, Adam J. Bock, Tore Opsahl, Gerard George, David M. Gann

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This study uses responses from 107 multinational firms to reveal CEO perceptions of the drivers of strategic flexibility during business model innovation. While the positive effect of creative culture is confirmed, partner reliance reduces strategic flexibility during business model innovation. Further, structural change is disaggregated into efforts that either focus managerial attention on core activities or reconfigure existing activities. CEOs perceive that structural flexibility requires structural simplification while retaining control of non-core functions. We find that the relative magnitude of business model innovation effort moderates the effect of reconfiguration on strategic flexibility. The implications for theories of organizational design and …

Business And Data Analytics: New Innovations In The Management Of E-Commerce, Robert J. Kauffman, Jaideep Srivastava, Jamshid Vayghan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The success of many different kinds of e-business operations depends on data and information, and how they are used to optimize operations, drive sales and marketing, and grow the business. The ability to manage and safeguard data as a strategic asset, transform it into actionable information, and use it as a strategic differentiator is a key contributor to the success of any business operation. What makes this an even more interesting challenge is the speed at which data have been growing in recent years, due to social networking, the Internet, mobile telephony and all kinds of new technologies that create …

Human Rights, Regulation, And National Security, Katina Michael, Simon Bronitt

Professor Katina Michael

Law disciplines technology, though it does so in a partial and incomplete way as reflected in the old adage that technology outstrips the capacity of law to regulate it. The rise of new technologies poses a significant threat to human rights – the pervasive use of CCTV (and now mobile CCTV), telecommunications interception, and low-cost audio-visual recording and tracking devices (some of these discreetly wearable), extend the power of the state and corporations significantly to intrude into the lives of citizens.

Advancing knowledge through robust research is an honourable aim- being scientific, finding the right methodology, executing project phases meticulously, and reporting on the outcomes as objectively and accurately as possible. But may I begin my inaugural editorial by saying that an even higher ideal to advancing knowledge is critiquing it as it happens. Reflective practice is not just something to be done by academics in their teaching- reflective practice is what we should all be doing as we go about undertaking our various day-to-day work tasks. For the engineer engaged in research and development, whether in industry or government, reflective …

Adding User Experience Into The Interactive Service Design Loop: A Persona-Based Approach, Djilali IDOUGHI, Ahmed SEFFAH, Christophe KOLSKI 2012 University A. Mira of Bejaia, Algeria

Adding User Experience Into The Interactive Service Design Loop: A Persona-Based Approach, Djilali Idoughi, Ahmed Seffah, Christophe Kolski

Professor Djilali IDOUGHI

Approaches to service design share HCI's commitment to developing with and for people useful, usable and accessible services. However, there has been little explicit interaction between the emerging service sciences and the interaction design communities. This paper explores HCI's actual position and opportunities to service design and requirements and vice versa. We propose a design framework for service oriented interactive systems integrating the concept of persona. This enables to extract relevant elements towards deriving the design of the main functionalities of the user interface. This framework is applied to a case study of the e-maintenance of an agro-alimentary group.

Sousveillance And The Social Implications Of Point Of View Technologies In The Law Enforcement Sector, Katina Michael, M.G. Michael

Associate Professor Katina Michael

Policing today has become a high-tech affair; especially in the provision of incident event tracking and reporting systems increasingly being used to provide evidence in a court of law. These in-car video (ICV) and body worn recording systems are said to increase convictions and eliminate false claims made by defendants, providing documentary support to police officers and their associated actions in an incident. But today, new technologies such as smart phones equipped with cameras and global positioning system chipsets can also be found in the hands of the everyday citizen, used to capture everyday happenings and distributed to social networks …

The Central Role Of Information Systems In Managing Crises, Knowledge@Smu

Knowledge@SMU

Important decisions should be taken with the best information available. Such an axiom may not apply, however, in large-scale emergency situations where officials would find themselves in a bind, unable to access accurate data yet faced with huge responsibilities to be effective at work. These complexities led a team of researchers, including SMU's associate professor of accounting, Gary Pan, to examine how information systems may facilitate management and coordination work at times of crises.

Containment And Virtualization Slot Technology And The Remaking Of The Casino Industry, Kah-Wee Lee 2012 National University of Singapore

Containment And Virtualization Slot Technology And The Remaking Of The Casino Industry, Kah-Wee Lee

Occasional Papers

This paper examines how the casino industry was transformed by slot technology between 1950 and 1990. The criminalization of slot machines in the 1950s led to their massive evacuation into Las Vegas casinos. In this concentrated environment, slot machines revealed to casino operators an automated surveillance technology that could disassemble the player into streams of virtual data, not through any overt means, but through the very activity of play itself. Slot managers and gaming technologists found themselves empowered professionally as they experimented with ways to transform data into profits. From the 1970s to the 90s, this technological development effectively linked …

Problem statement: Although, literature proves the importance of the technology role in the effectiveness of virtual Research and Development (R&D) teams for new product development. However, the factors that make technology construct in a virtual R&D team are still ambiguous. The manager of virtual R&D teams for new product development does not know which type of technology should be used. Approach: To address the gap and answer the question, the study presents a set of factors that make a technology construct. The proposed construct modified by finding of the field survey (N = 240). We empirically examine the relationship between …
