Legal Protection Of Workers’ Human Rights: Regulatory Changes And Challenges In The United States, Lance Compa

Lance A Compa

[Excerpt] In a 2002 study, the US Government Accountability Office reported that more than 32 million workers in the United States lack protection of the right to organise and to bargain collectively. But since then, the situation has worsened. A series of decisions by the federal authorities under President George Bush has stripped many more workers of organising and bargaining rights. The administration took away bargaining rights for hundreds of thousands of employees in the new Department of Homeland Security and the Defense Department.18 In the years before the 2009 change of administration, a controlling majority of the five-member National …

Cosmopolitans Or Locals: Who Will Lead The Next Generation Of Community Colleges?, Melanie O. Anderson 2011 University of Nebraska-Lincoln

Cosmopolitans Or Locals: Who Will Lead The Next Generation Of Community Colleges?, Melanie O. Anderson

Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Scholars have identified a potential community college leadership crisis as a large percentage of community college presidents prepare to retire (Shults, 2001; Weisman & Vaughan, 2007). The most common pathway to the community college presidency has been through the chief academic officer (CAO) position (Vaughan, 1990).

Selection of future leaders often focuses on manifest social roles or the expectations that are universally shared and relevant to a given context (Grimes & Berger, 1970). Latent social roles are the internalized shared expectations that are not always seen as relevant on face value, but are predicted to affect an individual’s attitudes and …

An Owa-Topsis Method For Multiple Criteria Decision Analysis, Ye Chen, Kevin W. Li Dr., Si-feng Liu 2011 University of Windsor

An Owa-Topsis Method For Multiple Criteria Decision Analysis, Ye Chen, Kevin W. Li Dr., Si-Feng Liu

Odette School of Business Publications

A hybrid approach integrating OWA (Ordered Weighted Averaging) aggregation into TOPSIS (technique for order performance by similarity to ideal solution) is proposed to tackle multiple criteria decision analysis (MCDA) problems. First, the setting of extreme points (ideal and anti-ideal points) in TOPSIS is redefined and extended for handling the multiple extreme points situation where a decision maker (DM) or multiple DMs can provide more than one pair of extreme points. Next, three different aggregation schemes are designed to integrate OWA into the TOPSIS analysis procedure. A numerical example is provided to demonstrate the proposed approach and the results are compared …

At The Intersection Of Corporate Governance And Environmental Sustainability, Jayne W. Barnard 2011 William & Mary Law School

At The Intersection Of Corporate Governance And Environmental Sustainability, Jayne W. Barnard

William & Mary Business Law Review

Most boards of public companies have learned to live comfortably with audit committees, nominating committees, and compensation committees. An increasing number of companies are now also creating risk-management committees. This Essay explores the early stages of development of yet another board-level committee: the sustainability committee. The Essay posits several advantages to having a board-level sustainability committee and identifies possible sources of pressure for the creation of more such committees. It also suggests some of the disadvantages of sustainability committees and cautions against cosmetic governance reform. By examining what we know today (and can imagine tomorrow) about sustainability committees, this Essay …

Partial Budgeting Analysis Of Conventional Pump Over Versus Pulsair Cap Management System For A Large–Scale California Winery, Zachary Thomas Hicks 2011 California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo

Partial Budgeting Analysis Of Conventional Pump Over Versus Pulsair Cap Management System For A Large–Scale California Winery, Zachary Thomas Hicks

Agribusiness

The purpose of this project was to evaluate the financial feasibility of implementing an automated gas injection system from Pulsair as an alternative to the traditional pump over cap mixing technique that is used during the alcoholic fermentation stage of winemaking.

There were various costs involved in this project that were determined and explained through the use of the partial budgeting method. The costs that were thoroughly analyzed included equipment, labor, utility, and initial investment costs for the Pulsair system as well as the related pump over operation costs. After the two methods associated numbers were evaluated, they were then …

The four components which comprise this thesis project include a concise business description, a detailed branding guide, a functioning website, and a reflective essay conveying the motivations, inspirations, and historic details of the project and how it fits into the world of social entrepreneurship.

Identifying Traffic Count Posts For Origin-Destination Matrix Adjustments: An Approach To Actual Size Networks, Saeed Asadi Bagolee, Mohsen Asadi, Lorna Richardson 2011 Parsons

Identifying Traffic Count Posts For Origin-Destination Matrix Adjustments: An Approach To Actual Size Networks, Saeed Asadi Bagolee, Mohsen Asadi, Lorna Richardson

Journal of Transportation Management

For transportation planners, the use of Origin-Destination (OD) matrix adjustment, is receiving considerable attention. However, there are concerns about the validity of results, primarily related to the number and location of traffic count posts. This leads to the question “What would be the best set of traffic count posts to use in OD matrix adjustment modules?” It has been proved that solving this problem is cumbersome. There have been several attempts (either exact or heuristic approaches) to address this problem. But due to the inherent complexities, there is no efficient and easy-to-use methodology able to address situations on the scale …

Quantitative Hedge Fund Selection (Part 2), Melvyn TEO 2011 Singapore Management University

Quantitative Hedge Fund Selection (Part 2), Melvyn Teo

Research Collection BNP Paribas Hedge Fund Centre

Do fund incentives, volatility exposure, and liquidity risk affect fund performance? We show that hedge funds with high performance fees and high water mark provisions tend to outperform those with low performance fees and no high water marks. Moreover, funds that short volatility and embrace liquidity risk deliver significantly higher returns relative to funds that long volatility and eschew liquidity risk. Investors with access to secure capital and managed account platforms may be positioned to take advantage of these performance differences.
