Do Mutual Funds Herd In Industries?, Umut Celiker, Jaideep Chowdhury, Sokhan Sonaer

Business Faculty Publications

This study examines whether mutual funds herd in industries and the extent to which such herding impacts industry valuations. Using two herding measures proposed by Lakonishok et al. (1992) and Sias (2004) we document that mutual funds herd in industries. We show that industry herding is not driven by fund flows and that it is not a manifestation of individual stock herding. We also find evidence indicating that herding in industries by mutual funds is related to the industry momentum phenomenon first documented by Moskowitz and Grinblatt (1999), but it does not drive industry valuations away from their fundamentals.

Aligning Aims In Innovation Management: A Participatory Approach To Defining Mission And Vision Statements, Colm O’Kane, Pearl M. O'Rourke

Level 3

The problem of ensuring management and employees have clearly defined goals to work towards is one which has engaged management practitioners for some time. It is a challenge which engages organisations across industry sectors and business types (Prahalad 1999; O’Gorman 1999). This article describes the development of a framework for the identification of guiding goals for organisations using the principles of participatory design. The framework described involves internal and external stakeholders in the development of mission and vision statements. A pilot study using the initial stages of this framework was implemented with academic staff of an undergraduate academic programme in …

Aim: The educational approach towards practice placement education in health-related disciplines has changed in recent years. The use of collaborative or peer learning models has increased, associated with positive effects on desired outcomes such as learning, competence and reflective practice. At present, there is little published literature on the implementation or use of such models in dietetics practice placement education. The aim of this study was to conduct a pilot study of a collaborative peer learning 2 students to 1 educator (2:1 model). Methods: Experienced practice placement educators from four clinical sites in the discipline of dietetics in the Republic …

Why So Many Mergers And Acquisitions Fail, Nicholas Ingle

Level 3

Over the last number of years mergers and acquisitions (M&As) as a strategic growth option has begun to take off and increasingly organisations are turning to this in-organic method to achieve a competitive advantage and greater speed of entry to new markets. But M&As suffer from high failure rates, with poor integration accounting for a third of all failures. Management has cited a lack of an adequate conceptual schemes to guide them through the acquisition integration process. Hence, the reason for the research findings presented here: developing a process model for acquisition integration success. A pragmatic qualitative case study methodology …

E-Testing In Graduate Courses: Reflective Practice Case Studies, Martin W. Sivula Ph.D., Elizabeth B. Robson J.D.

MBA Faculty Conference Papers & Journal Articles

Do testing and exam conditions make a difference in final exam grades? Do testing “out of class” and “in class” produce different results over the same courses? Several graduate courses (N = 84) were tested under different and varying conditions. The majority of students were international, where English was a second language. In general, the “online” e-testers performed at a higher level than the ““in class”” testers with and without any time restrictions while test taking. Tentative implications might be that online exams (less controls) yield grades which are possibly higher, and may or may not be “grade inflated.” On …

Benefits And Barriers For Adoption Of Personal Health Records, Brittany Vance, Brent Tomblin, Jena Studney, Alberto Coustasse

Management Faculty Research

A Personal Health Record (PHR) is an electronic, universally available, lifelong resource of health information maintained by individuals. There are numerous potential benefits to PHRs, including improved patient-provider relationships, increased patient empowerment, and enhanced care safety, efficiency, coordination, and quality. However, privacy, security, cost, and adoption issues have been significant barriers to implementation. The purpose of this research was to determine how the use of PHRs affects patient outcomes, as well as to analyze benefits and barriers of adoption of PHRs. The methodology for the examination of the benefits and barriers to PHR implementation was conducted following the basic principles …

Assisted Living: Trends In Cost And Staffing, Amy Kisling, David P. Paul, Alberto Coustasse

Management Faculty Research

Assisted living communities (ALFs), which provide a community for residents who require assistance throughout their day, is an important part of the long-term care system in the US. Trained individuals assist residents with activities known as Activities of Daily Living (ADL). The costs of ALFs are paid either out of pocket, by Medicaid or by Long-Term Care Insurance (LTCI). Medicare does not pay for ALFs. Monthly costs of ALFs have increased over the past five years on an average of 4.1%. The major reason for this cost increase is probably the increased healthcare needs of the baby boomers generation, but …

A Note On Location And The Output Effect Of Ad-Valorem Taxes Under Free Entry Oligopoly, Yeung-Nan Shieh 2015 San Jose State University

A Note On Location And The Output Effect Of Ad-Valorem Taxes Under Free Entry Oligopoly, Yeung-Nan Shieh

Faculty Publications

This paper examines the output effect of an ad-valorem tax of undifferentiated oligopolistic firms in the Weber-Moses triangle. It shows that an increase in the ad-valorem tax will increase each firm’s output but may increase the number of firms and total output of firms if the inverse demand function is linear, concave or not too convex. This result is different from the well-known Tanaka’s result in non-spatial economy. It indicates that oligopolistic firm’s location decision has important influence on the output effect of the ad-valorem tax.

Assessing The Emphasis On Information Security In The Systems Analysis And Design Course, William David Salisbury, Thomas W. Ferratt, Donald E. Wynn 2015 University of Dayton

Assessing The Emphasis On Information Security In The Systems Analysis And Design Course, William David Salisbury, Thomas W. Ferratt, Donald E. Wynn

MIS/OM/DS Faculty Publications

Due to several recent highly publicized information breaches, information security has gained a higher profile. Hence, it is reasonable to expect that information security would receive an equally significant emphasis in the education of future systems professionals. A variety of security standards that various entities (e.g., NIST, COSO, ISACA-COBIT, ISO) have put forth emphasize the importance of information security from the very beginning of the system development lifecycle (SDLC) to avoid significant redesign in later phases. To determine the emphasis on security in typical systems analysis and design (SA&D) courses, we examine (1) to what extent security is emphasized in …

Ethical Implications Of The Affordable Care Act On Employment, Stephanie Anne Brown 2015 Southern Adventist University

Ethical Implications Of The Affordable Care Act On Employment, Stephanie Anne Brown

Senior Research Projects

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) has affected the decisions of many companies across America. Accountants in these companies are constantly concerned with lowering costs in order to increase profits. Firing full-time employees and hiring part-time replacements could help cut down on costs, but management's decisions not only impact the company, but the lives of their employees, their employee's families and the country's economic health. As a Christian accountant, one needs to realize the ethical impact of ACA to make informed decisions. This paper explores whether or not it is ethical for Christians to recommend that a company fire its staff …

Strategic Planning Objectives For Venture Capitalist Investments In Emerging Information Technologies: A Value-Focused Perspective, David L. Coss, Gupreet Dhillon, Ifeoma Udeh 2015 Virginia State University

Strategic Planning Objectives For Venture Capitalist Investments In Emerging Information Technologies: A Value-Focused Perspective, David L. Coss, Gupreet Dhillon, Ifeoma Udeh

The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance

Abstract

Academic and practitioner literature suggests that Venture Capitalists often have problems with aligning information technology opportunities with investment objectives. To a large extent the alignment process is not formally documented and relies on intuitive instincts. Hence it is important to define Venture Capitalist objectives for investments in emerging information technologies. This paper uses the Value-Focused Thinking approach to identify, define and structure value driven objectives. Based on data collected from a number of Venture Capitalist interviews we identified 130 values, which resulted in 72 objectives. These objectives were organized into 22 clusters, which were bifurcated into fundamental and means …

They outline two approaches to the definition of relationship marketing and provide their own definition, emphasizing such aspects as collaboration, creation and enhancement of value for those who are involved in relationships. The authors trace the origins of relationship marketing, describing the importance of a range of factors that contribute to the increasing importance of relationship marketing today, …
